Refused: Not “Fucking Dead” After All.

Over the years Refused has been one of those bands that confused me with their break up.  I saw the video footage of frontman Dennis Lyxzén exiting the stage to never return again.  A far-left band with crazy awesome riffs and a crisp sound, please don’t go!  I was almost saddened by their musical exist, but I had their music, so it was all good.  I have been listening to Refused throughout the years in their hiatus.  Their message against establishment and corporations rings highly important as of now.  They had their time in the spotlight (for a moment).  Now, I thought it was time to move on to another great band, with a powerful message, I thought they would come along.  Not so, there was no other band, they never came along.  F.

Even on their 98 album The Shape of Punk to Come, Refused had not lost their message throughout the years, (at least to me) and that message had not lost any relevance.  It seems interesting that a band so inspiring, and foretelling could break-up before they even got their hay-day to never come back and aurally appease us.  Interesting enough it is not so anymore.

Refused has been one of my favorite Hardcore Punk bands since I first witnessed the stand out, and insanely interesting video for ‘New Noise’. When I first saw the video, I was like, “Holy fuck, Slipknot doesn’t hold a candle to these semi-Beatlesesque looking cats from Sweden, holy fuck.”  Before I saw the video I had no idea that people in regular clothes could rock this hard.  I thought one had to be wearing gothic clothing, or masks, or just be zombies with an eating disorder, I was wrong.

Refused took the political minded person’s ideas, however rudimentary and simple they may seem, and put them on a higher pedestal.  They took heavy guitar and screams and made it into a crisp and non-annoying message, that message?  We will blow your ears out and leave you asking for more and we hate establishment and shitty corporations.  Then they broke up…

“Refused Are Fucking Dead” -Refused, in their final letter to the public.  This seems unfair, and sounds very punk.

Not only was Refused ahead of their time, but a band this great could not have lasted forever, so their break up was immanent, but sort of unexpected (I saw the footage); However, this statement is not wholly as important, or true anymore, as the fact that Refused will be reuniting and playing at Coachella.  What to my wondering eyes should appear on Wikipedia?

On January 9th, 2012 it was announced that Refused would reunite for Coachella and Way Out West Festival 2012.

I could not have imagined anything more exciting than seeing Refused back together, or at least rocking (I hope to personally witness this beautiful monster of awesome music creating), I have seen countless video performances, even the last one they had before breaking up, and it was enthralling to see a band so large in stature (message and sound-wise) seem so humble and connected to their audience.  They were something.  They were what hardcore punk bands should be like, they were the protocol for punk all encompassed.  Now they are again.

The irony is Refused, a band with Socialist views, and counter culture knowhow, occupying the stage in times of the Occupation of Wallstreet in the heart of it all:  America, California Baby!  I call fucking genius on this.  I hope they put out an album.

Heads up kids, if you haven’t already become hip to Refused, then here are some albums to put in your ears:

1.  Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent

2.  The Shape of Punk to Come: A Chimerical Bombination in 12 Bursts

As always, but with a smile suggesting you probably won’t find it, I suggest getting it on vinyl.

I can listen to either/or on a daily basis, and they basically help me prepare to kick some ass, or deal with relationship problems as a whole.

Great things do happen, even if it takes 14 years.
