Lady finds $100K and gives it back to owner

cashx-large1In an article I read yesterday by USA Today, I learned that a lady found $97,000 in cash in a purse at a Cracker Barrel and returned it to its rightful owner. She found the wad of cash in the bathroom and had no idea what to do with it, I’m guessing that she seriously thought about keeping the cash (who the hell wouldn’t?) and living a new found wealth. Apparently it took coaxing from her grandson for her to tell what had happened with the money. Billie Watts (75) of Murfreesborough, Tennessee found the cash in a manila envelope and decided that leaving with the cash would be the best idea because she didn’t know whose hands the money would fall in. She went home and called the restaurant and let them know that she found something in the women’s bathroom and left her phone number. Within 10 to 15 minutes she got a call from the lady who correctly identified the picture in the bag and the money count. The money in the bag was the lady’s money from the sale of her house, and she was off to start a new life. She offered to pay Watts a thousand dollars but Watts said she couldn’t take it.

This lady is the opitomy of what we should call a “saint”. I like to think that there are actually people out there in our society because it lets me have a feeling that there are people out there doing positive things. I mean think about it: If you found almost one hundred thousand dollars in an envelope would you return it? I know for me it would be really fucking hard to do… that’s a lot of money. Billie Watts acted on the thought of principle alone; the money wasn’t hers and it didn’t belong to her. We need more people like this in our country, real and honest people.
