FREE! Any smart Minneapolis music fan should do themselves a huge favor and check out this free showcase this week from some of the areas best metal bands. For those not aware, Høst has been recently been afforded the honor of receiving Decibel Magazine‘s 25th Best Extreme Metal Album of 2008 (placing them somewhere between internationally beloved bands such as Testament and Opeth). It’s quite an honor for a small band from the Minnesota scene that has barely had the chance to play 20 shows locally. Not to mention, their s/t album was my favorite regional metal release of the year. Høst is an innovative journey that takes both black metal and experimental rock through new ideas; a blizzard of an album that will please fans of all types of progressive and extreme music. Opening support is provided by Minneapolis grind’n’rollers Ambassador Gun, St. Paul deathgrinders Said the Shotgun to The Head, gritty Eau Claire metalheads Desolate Void, and Minneapolis metalgazers Vernal Pool. Concert Photo Recap: Blue Ox, Ambassador Gun @ the Uptown Bar

Although I missed the opening two bands (..I heard Nobot was very good electro psych..) thanks to the shitty road conditions, the fun shows that both these bands put on made the cold trip worth the while for me and the small group of my fellow drunken metalheads in attendance that night. AG even broke out an spot on cover of Sepultura’s infamous “Territory” to close their set! Here are some photos:

The date was Saturday, November 15th for experimental metal (underground legends) band Today is the Day‘s headling performance at the Turf Club in St. Paul with local crust/grind stalwarts Ambassador Gun and psychedelic doom prodigies Count Vesuvius. Despite being vastly underattended, the opening bands were AMAZING (..seriously, check them out)..) and the main set was a brilliant showcase of Today is the Day’s most recent album Axis of Eden set to feature film directed by David Hall. For nearly 2 decades, Steve Austin and Today is the Day have been redefining and expanding the definition of music, and even the performance that night redefined how a metal band can present a new album to its audience. The videos played throughout the performance were shockingly realistic, stark, and beautiful – the perfect mindfuck to complement the music of Today is the Day, a band that has embodied and defined this imagery ever since their early days on local AmRep.
