Concert Photo and Video Recap: Wolves in the Throne Room, Zebulon Pike, Krallice, Empires @ Triple Rock Social Club

Wolves in the Throne Room live at the Triple Rock Social Club

Truth be told, May has been a month where Minneapolis has already hosted an almost excessive amount of the unbelievable shows from psychedelically minded metalheads and rockers — the must-see Mastodon/Kylesa/Intronaut bill that ended last month, a stellar Mogwai performance at First Avenue, Thrones desecrating the Triple Rock, and even the expansive progressive death metal of Gojira at Station 4. And now Wolves in the Throne Room and Krallice come to the city for a gig with local favorites Zebulon Pike and Empires? Really, someone needs to thank some booking agents.

Still, even with such a crazy amount of awesome shows going on, the crowds were still strong last Friday (May 15, 2009) for a night of all types of psych-metal (with a heavy emphasis on the black metal). The performances that night were spotless and were definitely just as mind-blowing as I expected they might be, each band immersing the crowd beneath their own monstrous demonstration of ear-splitting blackened, progressive waves of noise. If that sounds enticing, then you really should’ve been there.

Anyway, the Triple Rock was surprisingly pretty packed, so I wasn’t moving around much once I took my spot, but I tried to capture some photos and videos when I could — something rather difficult for a dude with a point-n-shoot and a flash and plumes of fog billowing from the stage throughout Wolves in the Throne Room’s entire otherworldly set.. Either way, enjoy.

Wild Style Wednesday Review: Cage, Hell’s Winter

Posted in Wildstyle Wednesdays with tags , , , , , , , on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Hells WinterHell’s Winter might be one of the best label debuts I’ve ever heard. Hell’s Winter is Cage’s sophomore album, and it saw him coming into a different light than Movies For The Blind, and all I can say is that this album is really fucking impressive. Cage rhymes about some of the most insane shit that I’ve ever heard, but the crazy part is that he has actually lived most of it.  Def Jux as a label has put out a lot of really good material, but this album might be the best. This album makes for one hell of a violently vicious view inside of Cage’s mind. Continue reading

This is some of the best news I’ve heard all year long. Black Milk, Sean Price & Guilty Simpson have signed their deal with Duckdown Records for the Random Axe project. My anticipation for this album is crazy because I know it is going to be one of the best of the year. Listen to Sean Price as he makes everything official!

Evidence & Fashawn Tear Apart 101Barz Radio

All I can say after watching this video is holy shit. I’m serious, this is one of the best freestyle sessions I’ve heard in years. Evidence & Fashawn dropped by 101Barz and decided to do a mad freestyle session. I’m telling you people watch out for Fashawn, he’s going to be doing some serious things when his LP Boy Meets World drops. As to be expected EV does his thing as well and leaves the microphone battered and beaten.

Guilty Simpson Lets Go of that “Stress” With Some Help From Dilla

Posted in Audio, Downloads with tags , on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Guilty In my opinion Guilty Simpson is the one emcee that Dilla’s beats fit with perfectly. Every time you hear Guilty on a Dilla track there is no questioning whether he was the right person for the job. With the track “Stress” the outcome is no different. Dilla lays down a sick beat that is very omniscent of the Beatles tune “Eleanor Rigby” with a more electronic twist, and Guilty flows over this track like a waterfall. Even though this track isn’t on Jay $tay Paid it still makes me anticipate it even more, because the only thing better than Dilla tracks, is new Dilla tracks.

Download Cage’s Free EP, I Never Knew You

I never Knew You

I finally got the download link for this album when I checked my MySpace for the first time in about two weeks. It’s over at the MTV2 Subterranean Blog, and unfortunately you have to download each track individually, not as a whole album. Although I feel as though the individual track download is kind of bogus, I don’t think that the EP is going to be the same. Make sure you download this FREE EP, and also go out and get Depart From Me when it drops in July.

New Broken Social Scene Album > New Radiohead Album

Posted in Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , , on Monday, May 18, 2009 by Erik Burg

BSS group      Prepare to hype or hate. It’s that time once again to praise some of the world’s best selling artists for follow up albums. Canadian super group Broken Social Scene are finally recording a following up to their self-titled third album, full band and all. Radiohead are also quick to start recording the follow up to their hugely successful 2007 album In Rainbows.

Which one am I more excited for? Go ahead and reference the title of this column for the answer to that one. Radiohead is good and all (sort of) but the coordination and complication that comes with Broken Social Scene recording a full band album makes their news all that much more exciting than lame Thom Yorke and co. recording some stuff.

Here are the official words from each camp on the recording of the albums:

Radiohead -“It’s at the stage where we’ve got the big Lego box out and we’ve tipped it out on the floor and we’re just looking at all the bits and thinking what’s next?…It was very noisy and chaotic and really fun.”  via Bassist Colin Greenwood.

Broken Social Scene -“I can’t tell you what this record will sound like, who from the other great bands will be involved, but I can tell you it feels amazing to be in Chicago recording.” Guitarist/everything man Kevin Drew.

Radiohead is recording with their longtime producer Nigel Godrich. Broken Social Scene is recording with mastermind John McEntire, of Tortoise and Sea and Cake fame. I guess I’ll really be a dick about it when both sure-to-be-amazing albums hit the shelves.radiohead Until then, enjoy these tracks!

Hip Hop Official had the chance to sit down and interview Cage after the Paid Dues Festival last month. The topics that are discussed in this video are awesome. Cage is one of the most interesting guys on the Indie Hip Hop scene and this interview totally shows it. He talks about what Depart From Me is going to be about as far as concept, as well as what the production is going to sound like. He talks about Hell’s Winter album a lot and how Depart From Me is going to be different. Check this one out guys, Cage is one hell of an interesting guy.

Here is Cage’s newest video off his I Never Knew You EP which is supposedly due out today (Monday). I discovered this video today thanks to the homie Shake over @ 2Dopeboyz. The video is directed by the one and only Shia LaBeouf who also makes a cameo in the video. I will have Cage’s free EP up for you guys when it comes out later today.
