Thank you to Matt Conway for this gem in my inbox. Here is a new mixtape from Sabzi (of Blue Scholars & Common Market). Here is what Sabzi himself had to say about it:

People ask me why I care about making a mix of Hawaiian tunes. I tell them that it’s because Iʼm from Seattle. I donʼt think I can apply the word ‘foreign’ to any cultural elements that have influenced me in becoming the person I am today. Through years of, um, ‘nourishment’ from grinds, to listening to Jawaiian tunes as a teenager, to starting a group with a military kid from Honolulu, to learning the meaning of ‘false crack’ the hard way (ha!)… the spirit of Hawaii has long maintained a notable presence in my life. And while Iʼm not Hawaiian, nor do I claim to be a local boy, I acknowledge and am thankful for the role that the Islands have played in the development of my cultural identity.

For me, a big part of the OOF! EP project was to experiment with a new way of identifying who we are and where we come from.  It was an exercise in global cultural expression . Perhaps this is the age we can start believing that “where we are from” is anywhere that has influenced us in becoming who we are. And perhaps our brothers and sisters are those who want to share this belief with us. When you embrace this idea, you start to think that home can be everywhere and your people could be everyone. New People comin thru, son!

Respect to In4mation for the nifty ‘OOF!’ logo they designed and lent us, respect to Ohana for engineering the delicious shrimp tempura + diced spicy scallop + krab + masago sushi that they’ve dubbed the ‘69 Roll,’ and respect to you for reading this and listening to these tunes.

Mahalo.”

Stream Blue Scholars’ OOF! EP

OOF! EP Album Cover
On Tuesday, Blue Scholars released the much awaited OOF! EP. The sound is different from what we’re used to, but it’s a pretty cool concept, with Hawaiian themed beats and lyrics. I still haven’t totally decided whether I like the EP or not yet, I’m trying to let it grow on me a bit. However, above you can stream the whole album here and decide for yourself!
Visit iTunes or the Blue Scholars’ store to purchase OOF! EP. Currently it is the #2 Hip Hop Album on the iTunes charts.
There are also packages that include the physical copy of the album, t-shirt, and poster online at the Blue Scholars store. You can also pre-order Bayani Redux which drops September 1st.

Blue Scholars – Bayani Redux

Posted in Art, Media, Music News, News with tags , , , , , , , on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 by Nolan Levenson

On September 1st, Blue Scholars will be re-releasing one of my favorite albums, Bayani. The 2007 version, out on Rawkus/Massline, is out of print. Bayani Redux will be re-released on Duck Down to get it back out again. As you can see from the art above, it has a slightly different cover (I LOVE the color scheme) and will feature 3 more songs. Two of those songs were previously released on Digital EPs (“27” and “Southbound”). The last is a brand new track entitled “The Dawn Song” and features the Canadian rapper Shad (who is pretty dope).

So besides the artwork and the new track, there isn’t a lot here, which is somewhat dissapointing for me. I’ve been waiting 2 years+ since Bayani for some more material and we’ve gotten a couple of new tracks and the OOF! EP. Another new full length is apparently in the works so me and the other scholars fans are gonna have to sit tight.

The Blue Scholars “Hi-808” Video is Here!

Vodpod videos no longer available.

As you may remember, my man Nolan put up the preview for the “Hi-808” music video last week. Today the scholars released the world premier video for the track. The video is definitely shot very well, and to be honest I think it’s great. I can’t get enough of these guys. Ever since the first time I heard the album Bayani I was totally hooked on their music. I can assure you that I will be definitely grabbing the OOF! EP when it comes out digitally on August 25th.

Blue Scholars official EP release announcement + another free track

Posted in Art, Downloads, Media, Music News, News with tags , , , , on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 by Nolan Levenson

Today Blue Scholars released on their website/blog the tracklisting for their new EP entitled OOF! The project will be released August 25th via Massline/Duck Down. The inspiration for the album came from MC Geo’s Hawaiin roots and the Scholars return trip last New Year’s. The Scholars claim it will be “their most collaborative multi-media project” working with artist Andy Woebots to create art for the single “HI-808” that will later be printed and sold on a limited edition T-shirt. In addition, they will be working with photographer Aaron Yoshino. A new video for “HI-808” will be released too, made by Hawaii production team Kai Media and edited by DJ/Producer Sabzi’s brother Zia Mohajerjasbi.

The EP will have 6 brand new tracks from the Scholars (and the instrumentals although the instrumental titles are different). The EP will be released digitally along with limited edition 808 CDs. Follow me after the jump for the tracklisting and downloads.

Blue Scholars sign to Duck Down records

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on Monday, July 27, 2009 by Nolan Levenson

Blue Scholars, my favorite group, has announced that they have signed to a joint venture to Duck Down Records. I’ve suspected this move for about a year now since I saw the Scholars talking to Duck Down CEO Dru Ha before their show in NY. The move will allow them to continue to control their own music via their label Massline while getting better distribution of their record. On August 25th, they will be releasing an EP called “OOF!”. On September 1st, their 2007 album Bayani will be re-released and will be called Bayani Redux. It will include one brand new track and 2 songs that were previously available only digitally.

Personally, I don’t really understand the move. Blue Scholars sound nothing like anything else on Duck Down, musically or lyrically. I think the distribution is great for them, but I am puzzled by the move by both parties. However, I do hope for their success with this decision.

More new music from the Scholars is also expected soon so sit tight!

The video above shows Sabzi on Seattle’s brand new Light Rail and at the end has someone asking him about signing to Duck Down.

You can download the track “Coo” off their new EP here or on their blog. I saw them perform it live at Soundset this year and its a sweet song.

Blue Scholars to Drop New EP in August

Posted in Music News with tags , , , , on Monday, July 20, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Blue ScholarsOne of my favorite West Coast duos,  Blue Scholars, will be releasing a new EP on August 25th. These guys have been reppin’ hard for Seattle for the last 5 or so years. I unfortunately found out about these guys way too late when I read an article in Spin magazine last year. I immediately picked up their album Bayani and fell in love with that shit. Geo and Sabzi are one hell of a combo together and all of their music is top notch. Sabzi makes some of the dopest beats that have come out of the left coast in a while, and Geo’s political and conscious rhymes make me feel moved everytime I give their music a spin.

I found out about these guys last year, and their music has been on very heavy rotation ever since I’ve gotten into them. If you love good Hip-Hop there is no reason you should be sleeping on Blue Scholars. Make sure you stay tuned at Mind Inversion because I will definitely have a review up.

Editors Note*: According to the Blue Scholars Twitter Page, they will also be dropping a new full length in 2010.
