Converge recording new album in May; plans Chicago “residency” beforehand

New, raw audio has been leaking out from the Boston MA legends of technical hardcore & metal experimentation in Converge over the past year. First as background music to certain Deathwish podcasts in late-2008, then early this year in their select live shows, and now as a rehearsal in-studio video. It’s a time to be excited; this is the first truly audible recording of the forthcoming Converge album to hit the web! All I’m gonna say is that it sounds like Kurt Ballou has been working overtime (the riffing is out of this world, but man, that tone is fucking incredible!). I’ll let the music do the talking… Continue reading

Concert Review: Battlefields, Irepress, Frontier, Vernal Pool @ the Triple Rock Social Club

Battlefields live at the Triple Rock Social Club

It was Wednesday night, and the turnout was surprisingly good for the show at Triple Rock Social Club featuring a billing Battlefields, Irepress, Frontier, and Vernal Pool. For braving the cold, fans in attendance were treated to a perfectionist display of some visionary one-of-a-kind doom, post, and progressive metal from some bands that the music community is sure to be hearing much more of in the future. Though clearly young bands, both Battlefields and Irepress played like veterans of their craft during their brief appearances, with the former opting for a punishing, unpredictable brute force doom, gloom, and hardcore and the latter playing an impassioned, progressive and riff heavy style of post-rock. The enthusiasm was noticeably high (especially for a doom metal show) even throughout the open sets of slow, plodding doom by Vernal Pool and jagged, riff heavy post-metal from Frontier, as well, and I guarantee that every band playing earned themselves a few new fans that night. The Battlefields and Irepress tour is now headed down to SXSW, and I urge anyone in their path to go see it. For now check out the small set of photos from the Wednesday night show at Triple Rock (ps. unfortunately I could only get a few, as my camera battery died soon after Vernal Pool and I didn’t bring a spare – live and learn).

Video: Northern Outpost Ep. 4, featuring the Windmills

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on Monday, February 16, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Our favorite local web tv show, Northern Outpost, has just aired their fourth episode, and this week they’re at the Owl Recording Studio with Minneapolis-based acoustic crooners Windmills. As we said before, the quality of this fully independent, local music show is pretty impressive, and it’s greater proof of the extremely awesome, organic, and supportive scene that exists in the Twin Cities. On this week’s episode, Windmills compare playing in a band in Boston and Minneapolis, talk about the quality of the local music scene, and play some of their upbeat, relaxing, spacey electro folk rock in the Owl Studio. Visit Northern Outpost on NorthernOutpost.net to stay up-to-date on future shows, and watch Episode 4 below!
