Slept on Saturdays: Statik Selektah & Termanology, 1982

Ever since I’ve been listening to Hip-Hop, I’ve always been drawn to dj/emcee duos. In the case of albums like Train of Thought by Reflection Eternal and Moment of Truth by Gang Starr, the display of mutual respect and  pure chemistry between the two artists (respectively) is amazing; 1982 by Statik Selektah and Termanology is no different. I remember when this album came out back in 2010, and for some reason I just didn’t give it a chance. This may be partially because I had been sleeping on Statik’s beats. At the time, I had known about Term for a while because of his mixtape If Heaven Was a Mile Away that he dedicated to J Dilla. Sleeping on this album was a huge mistake; 1982 is a monster of a record, and it was no doubt one of the best albums in 2010, if not the best. Continue reading

Mixtape Download: Saigon, Warning Shots 3: One Foot in the Grave

The Yardfather is back, and he’s using his built up momentum from last year’s spectacular outing The Greatest Story Never Told. Yesterday Sai-Giddy dropped his long awaited street album Warning Shots 3: One Foot in the Grave. I can honestly say that this mixtape is bananas; all of the beats are straight fire, and Saigon spits that hardcore street flow that you’ve become used to hearing. Production comes courtesy of Just Blaze, DJ Corbett, Shuko, Red Spyda and Scram Jones. You can also expect to hear guest appearances from Jump-Off Joe Beezy, Lil’ Fame and Quan.

The Greatest Story Never Told was one of best year’s last albums, and it sounds like Saigon is going to keep bringing top quality material for the Hip-Hop lover’s ears. I personally can’t wait until Sai drops his next studio offering; he could quickly become one of the best emcees of this generation.

This track comes to us via the Inside a Change original soundtrack. The movie is written and directed by Rik Cordero. The movie sounds like it is going to be a pretty deep emotional movie, and to be honest I really want to see it. The sountrack looks phenomenal, you can expect to hear from Royce Da 5’9″ (obviously), Joell Ortiz, Consequence, Saigon, Wale, The Kickdrums & More. Follow me after the jump for the Royce download as well as the download and tracklisting for the soundtrack. Continue reading

Video: Just Blaze – How to Chop Samples

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , on Monday, December 8, 2008 by Tim Althaus

Vodpod videos no longer available.

If you are wondering what the world of chopping samples and making beautiful Hip-Hop music is all about, this is the guy that you want to learn from. Just Blaze has been one of the most innovative and well respected producers in the game for a long while now, and even has his own label called Fort Knocks Entertainment. This guy makes some of the most disgusting hard hitting instrumental beats I’ve ever heard. He has been doing things for some of the biggest names in the business (Jay-Z, Freeway, Ghostface, Kanye West & many others), and has also been pushing Jay Electronica and Saigon. Just Blaze has a great ear, and he has some of the best skills out on the boards at this time. Watch this video and learn from one of the greats.

Also: Look for Jay Elec at the end of the video.
