Hell’s Winter might be one of the best label debuts I’ve ever heard. Hell’s Winter is Cage’s sophomore album, and it saw him coming into a different light than Movies For The Blind, and all I can say is that this album is really fucking impressive. Cage rhymes about some of the most insane shit that I’ve ever heard, but the crazy part is that he has actually lived most of it. Def Jux as a label has put out a lot of really good material, but this album might be the best. This album makes for one hell of a violently vicious view inside of Cage’s mind. Continue reading

Guilty Simpson Lets Go of that “Stress” With Some Help From Dilla
Posted in Audio, Downloads with tags Guilty Simpson, J Dilla on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 by Tim Althaus
In my opinion Guilty Simpson is the one emcee that Dilla’s beats fit with perfectly. Every time you hear Guilty on a Dilla track there is no questioning whether he was the right person for the job. With the track “Stress” the outcome is no different. Dilla lays down a sick beat that is very omniscent of the Beatles tune “Eleanor Rigby” with a more electronic twist, and Guilty flows over this track like a waterfall. Even though this track isn’t on Jay $tay Paid it still makes me anticipate it even more, because the only thing better than Dilla tracks, is new Dilla tracks.

Download Cage’s Free EP, I Never Knew You
Posted in Downloads, Media with tags Cage, Depart From Me, I Never Knew You EP on Monday, May 18, 2009 by Tim Althaus
I finally got the download link for this album when I checked my MySpace for the first time in about two weeks. It’s over at the MTV2 Subterranean Blog, and unfortunately you have to download each track individually, not as a whole album. Although I feel as though the individual track download is kind of bogus, I don’t think that the EP is going to be the same. Make sure you download this FREE EP, and also go out and get Depart From Me when it drops in July.

Cage Talks With Hip Hop Official
Posted in Media, Video with tags Cage, Depart From Me, hell's winter, Hip-Hop Official on Monday, May 18, 2009 by Tim AlthausVodpod videos no longer available.
Hip Hop Official had the chance to sit down and interview Cage after the Paid Dues Festival last month. The topics that are discussed in this video are awesome. Cage is one of the most interesting guys on the Indie Hip Hop scene and this interview totally shows it. He talks about what Depart From Me is going to be about as far as concept, as well as what the production is going to sound like. He talks about Hell’s Winter album a lot and how Depart From Me is going to be different. Check this one out guys, Cage is one hell of an interesting guy.

Here is Cage’s newest video off his I Never Knew You EP which is supposedly due out today (Monday). I discovered this video today thanks to the homie Shake over @ 2Dopeboyz. The video is directed by the one and only Shia LaBeouf who also makes a cameo in the video. I will have Cage’s free EP up for you guys when it comes out later today.

Wild Style Wednesday Review: CunninLynguists, Southernunderground
Posted in Wildstyle Wednesdays with tags cunninlynguists, Deacon, Kno, Masta Ace, Rjd2, SOS, Southernunderground on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 by Tim Althaus
Before hearing this album, my view of Southern Hip-Hop was grossly grim(except for Little Brother). I had been hearing the same shit over and over again with Three Six Mafia and Lil’ Jon all the time, and frankly I was getting sick of it. Kno, Deacon & SOS are what you would call a boisterous breath of fresh air for the lungs of southern Hip-Hop. One of my best friends had been telling me about these guys for a long time, and my attitude towards Southern Hip-Hop stopped me from listening to them for awhile. After I started listening to this album I couldn’t believe what I had been overly oblivious to for so long, these guys are incredible. Continue reading
Jay $tay Paid Tracklisting & Artwork
Posted in Music News with tags J Dilla, Jay $tay Paid, Jay Stay Paid, Nature Sounds, Pete Rock on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 by Tim Althaus
THANK YOU Hip Hop Official! We now have the official artwork (which may I mind you is excitingly epic) for Dilla’s new album Jay $tay Paid which drops June 2nd on Nature Sounds records. As I mentioned in a previous post, the album will play out like a radio show with Dilla’s idol Pete Rock playing the program director. I am going to throw a guess out there and say that this is going to be one of the best albums of the year. Follow me after the jump for the tracklisting. Continue reading
