Audio: New songs from Mastodon, Cannibal Corpse, and Kylesa posted online

More new metal is making its way online today; here’s the rundown:

Mastodon, “Divination”
(STREAM – skip to 21:30 mark to hear song)
from forthcoming album Crack the Skye, available tentatively on March 24, 2009

It’s already been nearly 3 years since their brilliant third album Blood Mountain launched them into the spotlight, and now they are back with their epic, carefully crafted Rasputin influenced, (elemental) ethereal based followup. There’s really no telling what direction these guys will go in, but my instincts are telling me it well take them into progressive and uncharted territories that will elevate their profile as “forward-thinking metalheads” even more!

Cannibal Corpse, Evisceration Plague
(STREAM ENTIRE ALBUM)
Evisceration Plague will hit stores on February 3, 2009

Brutal death metal kings Cannibal Corpse are set to soon release the album that promises to be even heavier than 2006’s Kill. These veterans have set the goal of making each of their albums heavier than the last, and although that’s getting tougher and tougher each time, an authentic Florida session with Erik Rhutan has helped these veternans achieve it.  This is one of the most anticipated death metal albums of the year, and for now you can hear it all for free…

Kylesa, “Said and Done”
(STREAM)
from forthcoming album Static Tensions, available on March 17, 2009

Kylesa sounds like they’ve really grown into their own skin on this album. Their gritty, grooving doom sounds more precise and psychedelic this time around, and there’s a nice polish over the tracks that adds a fullness to the sound that I haven’t heard from them before. If the rest of the album sounds like “Said and Done” this will be an sure album of the year qualifier and a career peak for the band. They’ll be here to play this live in early April with Haunted, Nachtmystium, and Intronaut.

Audio: Mos Def “Life in Marvelous Times” & “Quiet Dog”

mos_def21 Mos Def is one of those guys that just seems to always be around. He is going to be dropping his first album since Tru3 Magic, which was released in 2006. A lot of people knocked Might Mos for Tru3 Magic and I really don’t blame them, the album just didn’t strike a cord for me. It was no where near the level of aspirations shown on Black on Both Sides.

I can honestly say that I am highly anticipating this album. I haven’t heard anything from Mos in a while, and he’s about due for a classic. I mean this guy has two uber classic albums in Hip-Hop on his shoulders (Black on Both Sides & Black Star w/ Kweli). Watch for Mos to be dropping some fire on The Ecstatic which is slated to drop on Downtown Records on February 24th.

A/V: Royce Da 5’9″ “Part of Me” + Trailer

Vodpod videos no longer available.

This trailer makes this video look like it’s going to be amazing, and to tell you the truth I will be surprised if it’s anything short of great. Royce Da 5’9″ has been creating a lot of hype lately for his new album Street Hop which is executive produced by DJ Premier. I can’t wait for this album to drop because it’s going to make some serious tremors on the underground and mainstream levels. Take a listen to the song as well because Royce has some of the best story telling abilities you will ever hear.

Peter Gabriel & Hot Chip, “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” (Vampire Weekend Cover)

For those of you that don’t know legendary singer/songwriter Peter Gabriel covered the Vampire Weekend song “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” with indie dance kings Hot Chip. The cover of this song in my opinion is amazing. Peter Gabriel is one of those singers that you can’t help but like no matter what he is doing. Hot Chip also provides a great back drop for this track. This is an absolutely magical cover of one of the best songs of this year. Listen to this track, you won’t regret it!

A young VanWyngarden on the right

A young VanWyngarden on the right

Some very interesting (old) new music has surfaced from one half of 2008 spotlight stealers MGMT. Andrew VanWyngarden, while attending Wesleyan University, had a class called Earth & Earth Sciences and he certainly did his very best to use his musical talents to pass the class. For some sort of presentation on the magical world of volcanoes, VanWyngarden wrote and performed a song called “Super Volcano” that sounds almost identical to some of the earlier MGMT releases out there; It’s easy to see how MGMT finally came about because this track exemplifies much of what they’re all about: over-the-top synths, floaty and imaginative vocals, and some hilarious (yet informative) lyrics. See the hilarious video for “The Youth” directed by none other than Eric Wareheim of Tim and Eric Great Awesome Show Great Job! fame below.

The track, considering its for an environmental science course, is surprisingly better than expected. It’s obviously nothing that would have made an album cut, but it makes for a delightful B-Side for a band that’s been all over the map this year. To be quite honest, the song sounds quite familiar of some older Of Montreal tracks, say…Satanic Panic era Kevin Barnes. If you fall head over heels in love with this cut though, you can find more from VanWyngarden and his first take a two man band called Glitter Penis here.

Now if only the burning hot lava from the super volcano could come and rescue all of us stuck in the miserable weather this week in Minnesota. It’s effing -35 right now!! anyway, ENJOY!
