Michael Phelps also holds a gold medal for… Bong Olympics?

Posted in Culture with tags , , , on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 by Tim Althaus

bong-olympicsPictures are all over the net of Olympic Champion Michael Phelps taking a nice bong rip when he wasn’t training (he didn’t get tested). I think it’s pretty much hilarious. It just proves that you can be an olympian and still smoke grass. Why is everyone so harsh on this guy? He trains pretty much year round, and when he wants to relax and smoke all anyone does is criticize. He had to apologize to the IOC, and luckily they accepted his apology and took it as sincere.

Michael, you don’t have to appologize to me. The whole world now knows that you not only hold gold medals in swimming, but in the world of Bong Olympics as well. So wait until you go to your next college campus party, who knows, Michael Phelps might be in the back loading one up for you and your friends. This just proves more than ever that even an olympic athlete can be pretty down to earth. I honestly don’t think this would affect his training either because he works out so much.

Second Supper Issue 148, The Sound Issue

Posted in Culture with tags , on Monday, February 2, 2009 by Tim Althaus

second-supper-148-cover Do you ever take for granted the ability of being able to hear? If this statement rings true at all (or you want a great read) I highly suggest that you take a look at this issue of the Second Supper. Briana Rupel and Adam Bissen have some very good articles in this issue that shouldn’t be missed. Adam Bissen decided that he would take a day where he would not hear anything. He put earplugs in his ear and had noise canceling headphones on all day. The result is very surprising and interesting when Bissen finds out what it’s like to have no sense of hearing. Briana Rupel has a great story about Wendy Arndt who became deaf when she was just one year old. It hits home with Bri because they are friends. Wendy is a very talented individual who plans on doing big things, and was actually named Miss Deaf Wisconsin in 2008. She is a very special individual because she transcends the bridge between the hearing and non-hearing world (read the article to find out why).

Brett Emerson does one of the most bold things that I have ever heard. He takes his iPod out of the mix (doesn’t use it, only in certain cases), listens to talk radio in the car and only listens to albums for reviewing purposes (but he “acknowledges reviewing as a slippery slope”). I honestly don’t know what I would do if I pretty much took all of my favorite music out of my life. I wouldn’t be the same person, I can definitely tell you that much.

You will also find, of course, the usual assortment of regular articles that you have grown to know and love. Do yourself a favor and give yourself a healthy portion of Second Supper.

Marijuana Field found on Google Maps

Posted in Culture with tags , , , on Saturday, January 31, 2009 by Tim Althaus

According to a news article that I found on Digg the Swizz Government found a “pot” farm buy using Google Earth. Apparently the bust yielded 1.2 tons of Marijuana and valuables and cash worth over $780,000. Personally I think this is absolutely insane. Is there anything you can really hide from Google these days? I mean yeah it’s a cool feature that you can find things via satellite, but it’s a little crazy. Granted these guys were kind of dumb just growing weed in the middle of a cornfield, but that’s not the principle of the matter at hand.

Apparently authorities found the marijuana field which was just about two acres hidden amongst a field of corn. According to the article they were looking for the address of two men that were supposively involved with the drug ring, and they stumbled upon this field of “green acres”. This group of people have apparently sold somewhere near seven tons of marijuana in the last 5 years.

Second Supper Issue 147, Hollywood Dreams

Posted in Culture with tags , , , , , , on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 by Tim Althaus

second-supper-147-cover In this issue of the Second Supper we explore the lights and glamour of the movies in Hollywood. In this issue you will find of course the usual articles (Top 7, Social Networking, College Sucks & Y Marks the Spot), but you will also find articles that have to do with movies because the people at the Second Supper know you love them.

The first movie related article you will notice is the movie quote quiz. I must admit that some of these are actually pretty tough, I went through them and could only get a few of them at first glance. Amber Miller also makes a great point about which gender’s skin you tend to see more in movies, and she takes a pretty in depth look at the issue. There is also an interview with Joan Juster an independent film maker from San Francisco (director and producer of Alaska Far Away) about the content of her movie as well as the process of making it. You can also read an overview of the Frozen River Film Festival by Adam Bissen.

Be sure to also look towards the back of the issue because you will also get your normal assortment of crossword puzzles, reviews, comics and mazes. Another quality issue from the quality alternative newspaper from the Coulee Region area. Che premieres tomorrow at the Uptown Theatre

Posted in Culture with tags , , , , , , on Thursday, January 15, 2009 by Ryan Buege

After over three years and $65 million spent on the production of Steven Soderbergh’s epic biopic about the Cuban revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara, the critically divisive movie will finally make a debut on Minnesota screens tomorrow at the Uptown Theatre in Minneapolis. The epic 4-hour, 2-part film starring Benicio del Toro apparently plays much like a diary and serves as a very accurate, documentary-like depiction of the motivations that fueled this leader, teacher, fighter, and eternal symbol of human rights and protest. Rightfully so, as the script was actually adapted from Guevara’s own diaries. The first part of the film, “The Argentine”, is taken from “Reminiscences of the Cuban Revolutionary War” (detailing the birth of the Cuban revoltuion and eventual overthrow of the Batista government), and second segment, called “Guerilla” (covering Che’s ill-fated continuation of the Latin American Revolution in Bolivia) is taken from his “Bolivian Diary”.  Needless to say, I’m pretty excited to see if these guys were able to make a movie that lives up to the monumental image of Che that I hold in my head. ..well, Del Toro still has yet to let me down, so I’m very optimistic.

Che will be shown in its entirety at the Uptown Theatre for only one week before it is officially released as a seperate features for individual viewing. Click here for more information on the showing  and watch the trailer below:

The Second Supper, Your Local Press News

Posted in Culture, Media with tags , , , , on Friday, January 9, 2009 by Tim Althaus

second-super-2 I want to tell all of you out there about an alternative newspaper called the Second Supper that is distributed in my area of residence. Most of the people that post on this blog know about it, but those of you readers out there that aren’t from our area (La Crosse, Coulee Region area) probably don’t know about it. They write about a variety of issues and have regularly syndicated columns (“Smock Talk”, “College Sucks” & “Y Marks the Spot”), as well as introspective features such as “Social Networking” and funny editorials like “The Top 5”. There are also reviews of music, beer, albums & books. Many of you may be saying, “Well Tim, that’s fine and dandy, but we don’t live in your area so we can’t read The Second Supper.” That is where you would be wrong.

The Second Supper has their own website on the Internet where you are able to view the most recent issue of the paper as well as issues for the last 4 weeks. That’s right folks you get everything on their website that you would otherwise be able to get in their weekly tangible publication. It sounds like a great idea to me to go checkout their website and see for yourself. The website also can show all of you readers out there what is going on in the area, so if you are ever thinking about coming to the Coulee Region for a vacation you can be ahead of the game.

Please go check out the Second Supper website and let me know what you think, I would greatly appreciate it!

Lady finds $100K and gives it back to owner

Posted in Culture with tags , on Thursday, December 11, 2008 by Tim Althaus

cashx-large1In an article I read yesterday by USA Today, I learned that a lady found $97,000 in cash in a purse at a Cracker Barrel and returned it to its rightful owner. She found the wad of cash in the bathroom and had no idea what to do with it, I’m guessing that she seriously thought about keeping the cash (who the hell wouldn’t?) and living a new found wealth. Apparently it took coaxing from her grandson for her to tell what had happened with the money. Billie Watts (75) of Murfreesborough, Tennessee found the cash in a manila envelope and decided that leaving with the cash would be the best idea because she didn’t know whose hands the money would fall in. She went home and called the restaurant and let them know that she found something in the women’s bathroom and left her phone number. Within 10 to 15 minutes she got a call from the lady who correctly identified the picture in the bag and the money count. The money in the bag was the lady’s money from the sale of her house, and she was off to start a new life. She offered to pay Watts a thousand dollars but Watts said she couldn’t take it.

This lady is the opitomy of what we should call a “saint”. I like to think that there are actually people out there in our society because it lets me have a feeling that there are people out there doing positive things. I mean think about it: If you found almost one hundred thousand dollars in an envelope would you return it? I know for me it would be really fucking hard to do… that’s a lot of money. Billie Watts acted on the thought of principle alone; the money wasn’t hers and it didn’t belong to her. We need more people like this in our country, real and honest people.
