Album Update: Skyzoo, A Dream Deferred (Artwork & Tracklisting)

Posted in Album Update with tags , , , , , , , , on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 by Tim Althaus

Since the buzz keeps growing for A Dream Deferred, Skyzoo decided to leak the artwork and tracklisting for the album. I’m excited about the dope album cover, but I’m even more ecstatic to see the producer credits and guest features.

As per usual, Sky will be spitting over beats by !llmind, Black Milk, 9th Wonder, Best Kept Secret & Eric G, but he threw two tracks by DJ Khalil into the mix, and this really excites me: I’ve been saying for a long time that DJ Khalil is one of the best producers in the game, and Skyzoo is my favorite emcee, so naturally my anticipation is off the radar. On the vocal side, listeners can expect to hear collaborations from Talib Kweli, Jill Scott, Freeway, Jared Evans and Raheem Devaughn.

I know I talk about this man quite a bit, but I believe in his music so strongly; if liking top-tier lyricism was considered a crime, then I would definitely be guilty of a hard felony. Make sure you go out to your local record store and grab A Dream Deferred on October 2nd.

Track Listing:
1) Dreams In A Basement featuring Jill Scott (produced by !llmind)
2) Jansport Strings (One Time for Chi-Ali) (produced by 9th Wonder)
3) Pockets Full feat. Freeway (produced by !llmind)
4) Give It Up feat. DJ Prince (produced by !llmind)
5) Glass Ceilings (produced by !llmind)
6) Range Rover Rhythm (produced by Jahlil Beats)
7) The Knowing feat. Jessy Wilson (produced by Eric G)
8) Drew & Derwin feat. Raheem Devaughn (produced by Focus)
9) Realization feat. Jared Evan (produced by DJ Khalil)
10) The Rage of Roemello (produced by DJ Khalil)
11) How to Make it Through Hysteria (produced by Best Kept Secret)
12) Steel’s Apartment (produced by Black Milk)
13) Spike Lee Was My Hero feat. Talib Kweli (produced by Tall Black Guy)
14) The Cost of Sleep (produced by Tall Black Guy)

Chace Infinite Paves “The Path”

Here is another guy that you should never think about sleeping on. Chace Infinite is one half of Self Scientific with DJ Khalil, and he’s a fucking crazy good emcee. If you haven’t gotten acclimated with him yet, you definitely need to do so. On this track, “The Path”, Chace rocks over Khalil’s beat that he did for 50 Cent “I Still Kill” and talks about the path that Allah has laid for him in life. This is definitely some dope material, and it will be featured on Chace’s upcoming mixtape I WOULD HAVE KILLED THIS… which I can assure you will be nothing short of amazing.

DJ Khalil Runs Us Through The Making of “Kind of a Big Deal”

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , on Friday, August 28, 2009 by Tim Althaus

If you’ve been sleeping under a rock, it would make sense that you have no idea who DJ Khalil is. This guy have been making some of the craziest beats in the Hip-Hop game for the last few years. In this video with Hip Hop Official, Khalil takes us through the process that was implemented while making the Clipse track, “Kind of a Big Deal“. I love the fact that there are absolutely no samples in this track, don’t get me wrong I love sampling but I think it’s much cooler when producers chop live instrumentation. Everything in this video makes me have a greater appreciation for Kahlil’s talent, and this beat in general. (Side Note* I love how they play the beat for Evidence, “All Said & Done” in the video)

Album Review: Slaughterhouse, Slaughterhouse

slaughterhouse-718945 I (as well as everyone else) knew well before this album came out that this album was going to be a benchmark for lyrical linguistics. Joell Ortiz, Joe Budden, Crooked I & Royce Da 5’9″ are all known for their raw radical and introspective lyrics, and when you put them together the results are going to be monumental. On this album Slaughterhouse sets out to prove that although you may have thought Hip-Hop was close to dead, they plan on showing you it isn’t. I can almost assure you that there probably won’t be another album to come out this year that has anywhere near the lyrical display of this album. Continue reading

DJ Khalil & Nas in the Studio recording

Posted in News, Video with tags , on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 by Nolan Levenson

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Shout out to Okayplayer for the find. Here we have Nas and DJ Khalil in the lab recording the song “Colors” which sounds sweet. Apparently it was supposed to be on Untitled but did not make the cut. From the sounds of it, the song is about race, specifically about mixed-race children.

Slaughterhouse is Making Me Go “Cuckoo”

Yes, the above picture is the official artwork for the new album dropping August 11th. Here is the newest cut off the album, “Cuckoo”, which is produced by the one and only DJ Khalil. This is yet another strong track by Joell Ortiz, Crooked I, Royce Da 5’9″ & Joe Budden. These guys got me really wanting to hear that debut album like crazy. On every track that I’ve heard by these guys they come together to form like Optimus Prime, they just destroy tracks like bar brawls.

Slaughterhouse Brings You “The One”

Slaughterhouse, The One

Man, these guys have put out 2 tracks that have just astonished me beyond belief. The wordplay that every one of these guys has is impeccable, and the production that we’ve heard has been top quality as well. DJ Khalil lays down a nice rock guitar infused beat that has Royce Da 5’9″, Crooked I, Joell Ortiz & Crooked I all spitting lava just like Kilauea. This album sounds like it is quickly shaping up to be a classic…
