Steve Aoki Gives N.A.S.A. the Remix Treatment on “Gifted”

N.A.S.A‘s more than audacious project of an album Spirt of Apollo has been polarizing to this point. It’s not quite a hip-hop album, it’s not quite the electro album it tries to be at points either.

Here is where doctor Steve Aoki steps in to cure the problem. Taking what is arguably the album’s best track “Gifted” featuring Kanye West, Santogold, and Lykke Li, Aoki gives the song a strong does of banging electro medicine. Turning many of the choruses into mashed-up tweaked-out bass-ladened masterpieces, Aoki delivers once again. I’ve heard endless amounts of Aoki production, mixes, and remixes already, but I have to say that this might be his strongest to date.

Aoki is able to make “Gifted” sound like it was always this dirty European techno track, going back and listening to the original is almost a let down knowing that it never reaches the peak that Aoki takes it to in this remix. If you enjoy anything in this line of work, it’s worth checking out for sure. Enjoy!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs + Bass + Glitches = all this stuff

So the Yeah Yeah Yeahs new album It’s Blitz! finally hit shelves this week. Everybody and their mother has already heard it. Everybodyzero1 and their brother already loves it. It’s first official single, ‘Zero.’ has gotten more than its fair share of remixes too. The original is great though, so a few of these kind of disappoint me though, I have to say. But let’s get started:

‘Zero’ Disco Weirdos Re-Edit. The longest of any of the remixes featured on here, Disco Weirdos have seemingly found the key to a good remix of the track. Plenty of bass, but unlike the other mixes I’ll get to, these bumps are timed great. Booming to the cry of “Zero,” the bass adds a great kick when at first it seemed destine to just be like any other remix of any other track ever. The last half of the track adds another layer of high pitched synth over-lay that adds a lot of excitement to the song as well. What comes of all this is the perfect club single, it kind of gives of a little bit of a ’90s feel too it at the end too, but I love it.

‘Zero’ MSTRKRFT Remix. As much of a fan as I am of MSTRKRFT, I have to say this right away: “Come on guys.” Not only was your new album a huge let down, but now this?! What Disco Weirdos did right, these guys did wrong, too much bass right from the first line. The all treble and echoing breakdown in the middle is nice, but seriously, it takes a lot more than deep hits to keep anybody interested. Sorry, but feel free to pass on this one.

‘Zero’ N.A.S.A. Remix. Again, a highly touted group that I was overly excited to hear make a run at this track, but the result… pretty boring. It’s sort of the middle ground between the first two mixes, it has the treble breakdown with glitchy and skipping vocals, but with little bass when it maybe should have more. In the end, it’s hard to tell this one apart from what MSTRKRFT brought to the party, making their effort seem all the more average.

‘Zero’ Erol Alkan Remix Preview. First off, this is only a minute long preview, and the full length isn’t quite out yet, so with a grain of salt I suppose. I’ve gotta imagine this edit is going to run a pretty long length too, because in the 1:10 preview there is about a one word vocal sample. I like what what I hear though, It’s a bit more house-y too, and feels massive compared to the other tracks. “Shellshock” is the one word we hear from Karen O, and then Erol slaps you over the face with all the bass. It’s silly how good this mix could be, so get excited.

Oh yeah, and did I mention THIS is happening. Be excited people, be very excited.

Why is it so cold still?!

Oh man, I’m so sick of this weather. I’m praying for the day when I can just open my window and enjoy some fresh air without having to look outside and see it snowing. So I’ve pretty much become a total recluse again this week, avoiding the said cold, and reading the internets all day ‘n night (sorry, can’t get that song out my head). Sad for me, but good for you. I’ve uncovered and gathered some of this week’s highlights in the music world. Video, mp3s, etc. So curl up by the fireplace, and Enjoy!

Starting things off is the video for the new Juan Maclean track “One Day.” This track has come as somewhat of a surprise to me after hearing the first two singles off the album run around the ten minute mark each; thinking that The Juan would revert to more 12″ mix type material, “One Day” has more of a pop track than anything else I’ve heard. The track also focuses heavily on Nancy Whang’s vocals, something that has drawn me towards the album ever since it’s inception. “One Day” doesn’t amaze me, but it’s good, and I can’t wait to hear the full album. From The Future Will Come due out April 21st 2009 on DFA Records.

Next is the video to the stellar N.A.S.A. track “Gifted.” For all of you who haven’t heard the album yet, I’d suggest checking it out. There’s a lot to like about the album, its features everyone from Tom Waits to Ol’ Dirty Bastard, but “Gifted” features the heavyweight of them all: Kanye West. Though I’m not a huge fan and his first verse on here sort of upsets me, (no Kanye, people wore tight pants before you did) I do enjoy the track. Oh yeah, and did i mention Santogold and Lykke Li are on it too? Give it a look see. Liftoff! Spirit off the Apollo is out now on Anti Records.

There was plenty of new tracks/remixes/edit etc floating out there this week as well. I won’t go too in depth about them, but as always I’d suggest the Calvin Harris remix and probably the Times New Viking cover of The Arcade Fire as well. Enjoy! and stay warm ;)

Calvin Harris – “I’m Not Alone (See You At The Festival’s Remix)”

Times New Viking – “Neighborhood #1 (tunnels) (Arcade Fire Cover)”

Passion Pit – “Reeling”

The Arcade Fire – “Wake Up (Where The Wild Things Are Trailer Version”

Audio: N.A.S.A. – “The Mayor” featuring The Cool Kids, Ghostface Killah, Scarface, and DJ AM

nasaWhile more and more material from North America South America, better known as N.A.S.A, leaks out I get more an more anxious to listen to the whole disc front to back. The beyond ambitious group is making noise amongst all crowds with prior leaks featuring Lil Wayne and another featuring Chuck D, not to mention tracks that feature Tom Waits and Karen O.

This track though comes close to being the best leak thus far. “The Mayor” is a track that bangs from front to back, reminding listeners of what rap and hip-hop infused can really result in. The collaborative effort is astonishing considering the amount of talent on one track. I’ve gotta say that Ghostface takes the cake and really makes the track, which is somewhat disappointing for high my hopes were for the Cool Kids on this album.

Give a listen for sure though, and be sure to check out the album release February 17th on Squeak E. Clean records

Here is another animated video for another song off of N.A.S.A.‘s debut album Spirit of Apollo (which drops Feb. 17th). I want to re-iterate what I’ve been saying all along, go buy this album when it hits shelves because it’s going to be something special and amazing. This is a nice animated video and I can tell you right now that I’m loving the way that these guys switch things up on the beats. Check the video and buy the album.
