knonam-loudcomepcover250 I don’t think I talk enough about how happy Minneapolis Hip-Hop makes me. For the last 15 years there has been Hip-Hop pouring out of the great city of Minneapolis from the Rhymesayers team. Ever since I was in 10th grade I’ve had the great pleasure of finding out about it all, or so I thought. A lot of people don’t know that there are still a lot of other great emcees in the Twin Cities, and Knonam (pronounced No Name) is a great testament to my previous statement. I found this gem on the internet a little while ago, to be honest I can’t remember where I found it, but I wish I did so I could give them the props they deserve.

This EP is only technically seven tracks long (Brother Ali does the intro), and it features some of the biggest names in the midwest on guest appearances (Brother ali, Eyedea & Royce Da 5’9″). This EP also has stellar production from behind the boards courtesy of Knonam and Jake One. Knonam is one of those guys that fires off rhymes like a machine gun, all while making it seem so effortless. Every track on this EP is quality, I don’t think there is one track I would skip if I was listening to this album. Knonam’s production is very heavily influenced by 80’s music and it’s very easy to tell on tracks like “1988” & “Ransom” . The track “Hold It” featuring Brother Ali is pretty close to as perfect as you are going to get. In the first verse Knonam spits: ” The day I retreat to ya’ I’ll spit without clips/watch me swallow a Rubik’s Cube and shit it out fixed”, and Brother Ali spits: “We come to your town umpteen deep, and wipe your legacy out in one clean sweep!”. That’s the common theme of this album, dope ass rhymes with punchlines on every track.

Knonam actually dropped a debut album last year called Length of the Blade which you can purchase here. I am going to make sure I get myself a copy of that album, and everything else this guy does. It’s always really refreshing to me to be able to find out about such great talent so close to home. This is probably the most refreshing EP I’ve heard besides The LAyover EP in years, Knonam really brings the heat. I’m telling you, don’t sleep on this, you will truly regret it.

10/10

Video: Royce Da 5’9″, “Part of Me” (Official Video)

I’ve been waiting for this one for awhile. Here is the premier video for Royce Da 5’9″s single “Part of Me”, which is one Royce’s new album Street Hop due out April 21st. I can’t tell you how much I am anticipating to hear this new album of his, and this video is a great preface to it. Royce is one of those cats that has an unbelievable ability of story telling. The concept for this video is amazing and shouldn’t be missed. Make sure you go out and get Street Hop on April 21st, could be a major contender for album of the year.

Video: Black Milk, “Losing Out” (Featuring Royce Da 5’9″)

Man, today has been an insanely good day for me as far as posting is concerned. Videos were released for two of my favorite songs from the last year. The first one was “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by Evidence, and now “Losing Out” by Black Milk. This song was a clear stand out on Black Milk’s album Tronic. The beat on this song is absolutely amazing (the sample is incredible, I heard the original song while riding around with my dad weeks ago) and Black Milk & Royce Da 5’9″ destroy every bar on this track as if it was their sole mission. I can’t tell you enough, if you haven’t picked up Tronic yet you should be kicking yourself in the ass. Make sure you watch out for Royce’s album Street Hop due out soon!

A/V: Royce Da 5’9″ “Part of Me” + Trailer

Vodpod videos no longer available.

This trailer makes this video look like it’s going to be amazing, and to tell you the truth I will be surprised if it’s anything short of great. Royce Da 5’9″ has been creating a lot of hype lately for his new album Street Hop which is executive produced by DJ Premier. I can’t wait for this album to drop because it’s going to make some serious tremors on the underground and mainstream levels. Take a listen to the song as well because Royce has some of the best story telling abilities you will ever hear.

It’s almost as if we haven’t heard a great deal of magnificent music from the city of Detroit this year. Royce Da 5’9″ dropped this video for the lead single off of his soon to come masterpiece Street Hop. If you watch the video closely you will also notice that DJ Premier makes a couple of cameos in this video, well that’s because he executive produced the whole Royce album. If you aren’t familiar with Royce you need to get acclimated with him because you are truly missing out on something special. I can honestly say that this may be one of my most anticipated albums for next year,  next to the Elzhi & Royce Da 5’9″ album (that’s right they are doing an entire album together) and Guilty Simpson & Sean Price album.

Black Milk: “Losing Out” (Featuring: Royce Da 5’9″)

First off let me say Holy Shit! Here we are less than one week away from the release and I have heard three singles off of Tronic. I am already thinking this will probably be top 5 contender for my personal favorite album of the year. For all of you out there on the Kanye West tip, you need to get off it and start listening to Black Milk. This guy is one of the best producer/emcees I’ve ever heard. His flow on Popular Demand was liquid smooth, but his rhymes and flow are starting to get vicious.  I want everyone to mark my words when I say “Black Milk is the future of Hip-Hop and production”, he is going to be a household name soon enough. It’s just a matter of time until the D (and all of Michigan) blows up on the Hip-Hop scene, because they arguably have some of the best talent in the game right now (Elzhi, Buff1, One Be Lo, Royce Da 5’9″ ) and Black Milk will be the tip of that spearhead.

This beat has a sick ass sample and Black just tears the shit out of this beat like a piece of paper. Royce has his poignant (as always) flow and the two torch this track like a Philly blunt with a butane lighter. Before the track starts Black says “Everybody gather around and listen”, that’s exactly what everyone is going to be doing when they hear Black. His first line is “Let’s talk about the most under-estimated plus underrated city in this Hip-Hop game?”. I couldn’t say it much better myself, Detroit Hip-Hop is HIGHLY underrated and it’s a damn shame.

October 28th folks, that is the day that it will all change. Go and get Tronic this upcoming Tuesday, it is going to blow everyone away.

Listen to the track.
