Black Milk Brodcast, Episode 2

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , on Monday, July 13, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Twitter is a beautiful thing isn’t it? I checked my Twitter feed on my Blackberry and noticed this video was posted by none other than Black Milk. This is the second video from his Black Milk Broadcast series, and this video features more amazing footage from Europe. The girl in the beginning of the video mentions that the show that Black put on was one of the best that the club has seen for awhile, when you see him go on stage you will definitely see how true that statement is. Yet again, I love seeing Black mess with the MPC on stage and chop shit up. The way that he enters into “The Matrix” is unreal.

Here is episode number 10 of your favorite podcast about nothing in particular and this week it just so happens to be about one of my favorite topics, grilling. To me there is really nothing better than firing up the grill with some steaks and burgers and sipping on some good beers. Watch The Sunday Show crew turn up the heat a little bit and cook up some super dank food!

Elzhi & Black Milk Break it Down for Splash Mag

Here is a nice video of Elzhi & Black Milk backstage at one of their shows (does anyone know where the fuck I can get that shirt that Hex is wearing?) where they talk about a variety of issues with Splash Mag. The first thing they discuss is the movie8 Mile, Black breaks down what it was like around that time (how big of a spotlight it was on the D), and Elzhi reminisces on getting a check for being an extra in the movie (fuck he’s way better than Em, they should make a movie about him). Elzhi breaks down what Em was going for when he re-created the battle scene in 8 Mile at the Hip-Hop shop. Make sure you don’t miss this one, tons of valuable knowledge about the D here.

Royce & The Rest of Slaughterhouse are “Warriors”

Revival EPHere is the newest single from Royce Da 5’9″ off of his Revival EP, and it features the rest of the Slaughterhouse crew. The track is called “Warriors” and it’s just more of what you would expect from these guys. The beat is full of nice triumphant horns, and it is perfect for all four of these guys to kick the shit out of. The one thing that I can’t get over is how much all four of these guys truly bring to the microphone on every single track. Make sure you grab this one, it will not dissapoint.

Download: Royce Da 5’9″, “Warriors” (Feat. Slaughterhouse)

You can also download Royce’s new EP, The Revival EP on iTunes here. For those you that prefer Amazon, you can go here.

Northern Outpost Double Feature: Speed’s The Name & Empires

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , , , , , on Monday, July 6, 2009 by Ryan Buege

After missing the last episode of Northern Outpost due to my summer vacation, I owe it to the NO crew and Speed’s The Name to expand my post this week to mention episode #12 alongside the headbang-inducing show that aired this week featuring the dudes in Empires (episode #13). Before diving into their own sets of mind-boggling, attention-grabbing experimental music, both Speed’s The Name and my friends in Empires discuss subjects ranging from the way they write their songs to the struggles of making a name for yourself in an oft-ignored Twin Cities music scene that seems to be filled to capacity with exceptional music artists in their respective interviews. Since there’s so much video to enjoy, I’ll keep it short this week; enjoy the double-header of local experimental rock and metal goodness!

Sunday Metal Album: Poison the Well, The Tropic Rot

Posted in Sunday Metalhead Minute with tags , , , , , on Sunday, July 5, 2009 by Ryan Buege

As one of the most undeniably underrated bands in underground metal and hardcore during the last decade, Poison the Well has been consistently surpassing all expectations placed on  them through the thick and the thin. It’s honestly hard to believe that they held together long enough to record their last album Versions in 2007, a record that saw them step far outside the conventional confines of the metalcore sound which they had a huge part in originally pioneering; and it’s even harder to believe that their fanbase stuck with them through such mind-boggling changes. After all was said and done, the lucky ones who were still paying attention were left with one of the best progressive, post-hardcore albums in recent memory – a disc that is still growing on me to this day..

This week, Poision throws us for another loop with the release of their newly recorded opus The Tropic Rot. I’m still doubtful that this album will write Poison The Well the place in the metal/hardcore history books that they truly deserve, but that is no fault of their own… This is one vicious, thought-provoking release, and I hope that the critics don’t overlook the fine work of the dudes from PTW this time-around around. Mark my words: this is a strong album of the year contender. Listen in on their myspace for free today and see why…

Saturday Single: The Toxic Avenger – “Bad Girls Need Love Too”

Posted in Audio, Saturday Single with tags , , , , , , on Saturday, July 4, 2009 by Erik Burg

Hey faithful blogites, I’m back after my week off to bring you some of the best techno/electro/house singles being spun. And I’m enthused to say that I’ll be bring you all there is to know about the new Toxic Avenger single, “Bad Girls Need Love Too”. So put your mask on, put your ear to the speakers, and prepare for a banging new track. Enjoy!

Single: Bad Girls Need Love Too Label: IHeartComix Get: iTunes/Vinyl

“Bad Girls Need Love Too”, the first single since the insanely popular “Superheroes” EP back in 2007, doesn’t miss a step in creating skull crushing electro trash. No, not trash as in bad, trash as in dirty gritty nasty techno, the stuff Mixhell, Toxic Avenger, and the like have perfected, and the kind of stuff Justice is famous for. “Bad Girls Need Love Too” might be a bit harder to grove to than some of the more disco friendly stuff I’ve been posting, but Toxic’s new track is by no means not a party track. This song needs to be heard, loud and proud, the way this music has to be listened to.

Toxic has come a long way since 2007’s Superheroes release. Where we last left off, our hero’s shimmering, distortioned riffs called for a new generation of dance staples. The colorful and hopeful single became the theme to Toxic’s rise to power, and helped shape the standards to which we have come to know in the electro community. -Myspace

I can only describe this track, and any of the Toxic Avenger library and remixes as a sort of halloween sub-genre of techno. The music constantly teeters on the brink of eerie and creepy, while constantly testing the power of the amp in your basement. It’s an absolutely banging track, and if you’ve read this far you know exactly the kind of music I’m talking about. The remixes are well worth a spin too, as the Les Petits Pilous and Daze of Thunder edits both mark some impressive yet subtle touches. My favorite of the two is the Daze of Thunder remix, which keeps the lyrics in their pause and adds a MSTRKRFT-like cowbell to the second verse. It’s all completely overwhelming as a genre, but it’s so so good too. Listen for longer than 10 minutes and you’ll contract the world’s worst headache, but oh well, keep on dancing and keep on loving. I’ll be back with lots more soon, so as my good friend says: stay fresh.
