My 2010 Dilla Day Mix

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Media with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on Thursday, February 18, 2010 by Tim Althaus

I don’t know if you guys were readers last year around this time, but I did this exact same thing. I am a huge fan of J Dilla; he is a huge inspiration to me. I actually made this mix on what would have been Dilla’s 36th birthday. I took a lot of time thinking about what tracks would go smoothly together, but I also thought about what tracks of his were among my favorites. The outcome? 23 tracks of straight unadulterated Jay Dee goodness.

I figured I would post this mix here because I really want everyone to be able to have it; it’s nothing big, but if one more person starts to listen to Dilla because of it, then I’ve done my job. James Yancey really was the king of the beats, and his presence is strongly missed in the music world. All of the tracks on this mix are either produced by or featuring J Dilla (with the exception of one).

Vodpod videos no longer available.

I caught this nice video in my e-mail inbox from Audio Treats. Finale stopped by Fat Beats and spoke a few words about his new album as well as how he feels about Hip-Hop. This guy is quickly becoming one of my favorite emcees, if you haven’t checked out A Pipe Dream and a Promise you are truly sleeping. You can follow me after jump for part 2 which has Finale spitting an acapella on the streets of LA. Continue reading

I most likely won’t be doing any additional posting until Tuesday when I come home. I would like to leave you with some news that has come up the last few days for you to enjoy. Follow me after the jump to grab them. Continue reading

Finale Gives Some “Paid Homage” To Dilla

Posted in Audio, Downloads with tags , , , , on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 by Tim Althaus

finale 2

I’m so glad that 2DopeBoyz had this leak today. This track, “Paid Homage”, is probably my favorite track off of Finale‘s debut album A Pipe Dream And A Promise. It contains a bomb ass beat done by Flying Lotus, which was originally FlyLo’s tribute to Jay Dee’s beat on the Slum Village track “Fall In Love”. Make sure you check this one out, Finale shows respect to the late and very great  J Dilla in classic fashion.

Finale Gets Some “Issues” Off His Chest

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Media with tags , , , on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 by Tim Althaus

finaleAs I mentioned in an album review I did earlier this month, Finale’s album A Pipe Dream and a Promise is stupendously stellar. This track, “Issues”, is the latest leak off of Finale’s album and offers a harrowing insight into growing up in less than average circumstances. At the same time the song is also a great narrative about making the best of bad situations. The song is produced by Swiss producer Dimlite and according to the e-mail I got, Finale got the beat and wrote this track in an hour. Finale has talent that most emcees would kill for, this track is a great example of this.

Make sure you download this track, and if you haven’t go out and pick up Finale’s debut album A Pipe Dream and a Promise because it’s one hell of an impressive jump into the world of Hip-Hop.

Album Review: Finale, A Pipedream And A Promise

Finale is an emcee from the city of Detroit, Michigan who magnificently marvels me when he flows over the microphone. He has afinalecover voice that’s like a cross between 50 Cent and Kanye West (if I had to say) except for he’s much mightier than the aforementioned names. If you don’t know who Finale is, you probably should get familiar. This is an outstanding opus and a great entrance into the world of Hip-Hop that should be heard by all.

People that know me well know that when it comes to albums, production (to me) is a big determining factor on how I feel. The production on this album is nothing short of incredible and sets the tone of the album. If this was an instrumental album of just beats, I can assure you that I would give it an 8 or 9 alone. I remember seeing the production list and being amazed (J Dilla, Black Milk, Nottz, Flying Lotus & Khrysis to name a few), but what really surprises me more is that the lesser known producers craft concoctions that are just as good as the rest.
