Sunday Metal Minute: Cattle Decapitation, “The Gardeners of Eden” & “A Body Farm”

The vicious, technical new album called The Harvest Floor from San Diego-based modern grindcore/death metal forerunners Cattle Decapitation was just released last week by Metal Blade, and it’s fucking awesome. Put bluntly, this isn’t your typical 1 minute slash-n-burn straight-for-the-jugular grind that many seem to practice; this is some well-structured, epic music! Go to the band’s myspace now to hear the massive, chaotic opening tracks from the album, “The Gardeners of Eden” and “A Body Farm”. Over at Buzzgrinder, vocalist Travis Ryan had this to say about the songs:

“1. “The Gardeners of Eden”
This is the last song we wrote for The Harvest Floor as we knew we needed to craft the way the album starts out and we already had the song that was going to be the last song on the album. I like subtle reference things like staying with formulas or patterns with mostly everything but the music, that’s their job anyways. Such as using Garamond and Edwardian Script fonts together and laying out the art similar to the previous release. The same goes for this song. This is yet another anti-Christian song kicking off the record. Whereas “Unintelligent Design” (2006’s Karma.Bloody.Karma) dealt with the idea that if in fact humans are the work of a creator, he’s certainly a fallible fuck then… “The Gardeners of Eden” focuses more on the “creation” as being a destructive juggernaut hell-bent on eroding the planet. The title raised an eyebrow or two within the other band members when I told it to them (I come up with song titles first then write the lyrics) and it almost didn’t come to fruition. I explained the whole “well, the world is like the Garden of Eden and us as humans trim and cut down the garden so that makes us “gardeners”” and I kind of just went with it and it works even though the term “gardener” isn’t very brutal. Funny thing is, it was inspired by the track “People” by Boyd Rice in which he refers to the natural order of life needing “a brutal gardener” once in a while to trim some of the fat(humans) off the land(planet earth).

2. “A Body Farm”
Musically this song sort of spills out of the first track as it is connected by feedback ring-out and an atomic bomb blast. The idea of the “brutal gardener” spills into this as well in the form of a sociopathic crime scene investigator that runs a “body farm”. A body farm is a controlled environment operated by forensic specialists that emulates environmental effects on cadavers. They literally place real dead humans on the ground and study everything from causes of death to time of death and so on. The problem is, this guy has one in his backyard and his subjects are works of his own doing: he is also a serial killer and his victims are also the ones that help him solve other crimes. I thought I was really fucking clever with this until our graphics guru Cain was reading the lyrics as he was laying out our album and said “hey, this is just like that show Dexter!” He proceeded to tell me about the show Dexter where the guy is a serial killer as well as a blood spatter analyst. I promise you, I had loosely heard of the name of the show before, but never had any idea what it was about before writing this song. I’ve started watching it and it’s actually really good! Excellent cinematography… Anyways, I need to get cable. This show is rapidly getting up there with my favorite show ever Curb Your Enthusiasm, even though it ripped me off… that was a joke.”

Gotta love the creativity in these  gems (and Ryan’s Curb reference..). These guys called Cattle Decapitation also recently recorded a new video for the song “Regret and the Grave” (seen pictured in a still above) which will presumably be available online soon. Right now, they’re out on a short Southwest/West coast tour with Psyopus, Book of Black Earth, and Gigan.

Movie Review: Gran Torino (Hide the Kids)

Posted in Movie Reviews with tags on Sunday, January 25, 2009 by Eddie

Seriously, get off his lawn.

Seriously, get off his lawn.

Clint Eastwood is and may forever be the epitome of manliness. I mean, can you honestly think of a more complete badass? Eastwood has been incinerating skulls for over half a century, and he does a damn fine job of looking fly while doing it. As he’s aged, he’s not only gained more grit, but also more of a self awareness of what constitutes solid film making. Enter Gran Torino a film centered around a man who’ll remind you of that old guy who’s house you used to knock at 2 am on a weekend before you had a car or a girlfriend. In fact, that just so happens to be what this film is all about: Growing up and learning that there’s more to life than rollin’ with your homies and the nonsensical drug habits. Oh, they also touch on racism… Eastwood’s performance is legendary, and the films climax will have you questioning the legitimacy of some of this year’s academy award nominees. Check it.

A/V: Royce Da 5’9″ “Part of Me” + Trailer

Posted in Audio, Video with tags , , on Friday, January 23, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Vodpod videos no longer available.

This trailer makes this video look like it’s going to be amazing, and to tell you the truth I will be surprised if it’s anything short of great. Royce Da 5’9″ has been creating a lot of hype lately for his new album Street Hop which is executive produced by DJ Premier. I can’t wait for this album to drop because it’s going to make some serious tremors on the underground and mainstream levels. Take a listen to the song as well because Royce has some of the best story telling abilities you will ever hear.

Album Spotlight: Dark Was The Night

BUY BUY BUY (subliminal message)

Curing AIDs, one triple vinyl at a time.

So maybe you don’t buy albums, maybe you’re one of those so called “pirates” out there sailing the web taking what’s not yours. Well it’s time to reconsider this terrible habit that you’ve formed, and buy at least one album in 2009. But what album should I buy Erik?! Well my friends, despite stellar releases from the likes of Animal Collective and Andrew Bird already this year there is without a doubt an answer to that question.

Dark Was The Night is that album. All proceeds go to world AIDs research and cure development through co-operation with the Red Hot organization. The album is a collaboration of 32 exclusive tracks released on double cd or triple vinyl on February 17th on 4AD records. So yeah, it’s pretty obvious why you should be buying this album. But what’s so special about this other than that’s for a good cause Erik?!

Let me guide you again, dear friends. For starters the tracklist enlists some of, if not every indie giant in the music industry. I mean come on, they even got Sufjan to come out of hiding for this amazing compilation. Let me give you the rundown:

Andrew Bird, Antony + Bryce Dessner, Arcade Fire, Beach House, Beirut, Blonde Redhead + Devastations, Bon Iver, Bon Iver & Aaron Dessner, The Books featuring Jose Gonzalez, Buck 65 Remix (featuring Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti), Cat Power and Dirty Delta Blues, The Decemberists, Dirty Projectors + David Byrne, Kevin Drew, Feist + Ben Gibbard, Grizzly Bear, Grizzly Bear + Feist, Iron & Wine, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Kronos Quartet, Stuart Murdoch, My Brightest Diamond, My Morning Jacket, The National, The New Pornographers, Conor Oberst & Gillian Welch, Riceboy Sleeps, Dave Sitek, Spoon, Sufjan Stevens, Yeasayer, Yo La Tengo.

Easy to see that it’s an exhausting list, and that it truly does cover almost everybody influential in the industry. And if that list isn’t reason enough to buy this album than nothing probably will be. Come on folks, it’s all for a great cause and Dark Was The Night is shaping up to be absolutely amazing so go out and shell out 20 bucks for an album once in your life and enjoy the feeling of walking out of the store with a tangle album while also contributing to a great cause.

4Ad is giving everyone an advanced look at every track on the album in the following weeks too before the album officially releases on shelves. Each week 4Ad is releasing a track or two on their website or on different blogs around the web, and a few tracks have already been featured. Two of them in particular grabbed my attention and have been on play non stop around my room, Sufjan Stevens’ track “You Are The Blood” and The Dirty Projectors + David Byrne’s “Knotty Pine.” The two tracks are are pretty stellar pieces that are different from the normal catalogue tracks heard from each artist, but it’s a good change for both parties involved. Sufjan’s track is over 10 minutes long and changes pace at so many different points it’s hard to describe it as one thing or another.

Check them out for yourself though, and be sure to keep your eye out for the release on February 17th. Please, I urge you to do the right thing, if only for this once.

Phonte of Little Brother calls Kanye’s new album “an act of cowardice”

Posted in News with tags , , on Thursday, January 22, 2009 by Tim Althaus

phonte This article brought a great deal of content to my day not only because Phonte Coleman is the man, but because he totally dissed Ye’s new album. When asked about 808’s and Heartbreaks, He apparently said: “I didn’t like it, I was just like get the fuck out of here”, He also said that “I honestly think that it’s an act of cowardice” he continued “I think if you’re gonna make the creative leap to sing, then really sing. Let your voice come out, and let the people hear all the eccentricities and idiosyncrasies in your voice. That’s what makes you uniquely you… Imagine if Arethra Franklin used Autotune on Respect”. Phonte also said that he considered Kanye to be “biting” T-Pain.

I found this article to be absolutely hilarious. Phonte just confirmed what I’ve been feeling about this guy for the last 5 months. Autotune is for people that can’t sing or idiots. Phonte is one of those cats that a lot of people tend to listen to and I am anticipating the reaction in the rest of the Hip-Hop community.

Poison the Well, “Bowie” posted online

Posted in Music News with tags on Thursday, January 22, 2009 by Ryan Buege

New music from Poison the Well’s latest release, the 7-inch vinyl II/III (available starting yesterday, January 20th) , has surfaced online in the form of “Bowie” at the band’s myspace page. You might have guessed from the title, but the album release is the second in a series of three 7-inch releases of unheard material from the Versions sessions in 2007. As you will hear, “Bowie” shows that the band definitely ventured even farther in their experimental path than final version of Versions might have indicated. It’s progressive, emotional, “heavy” stuff, but still I’m really hard-pressed to believe that this is the SAME band that brought us the intense metalcore classic The Opposite of December… oh, soooooo long ago. Either way, no one else has taken the path that PTW has, and that alone is something to be admired. With the next LP release on the horizon, I’m looking forward to see if the decide to push the new sound of Versions and the 7-inch series even farther or abandon it completely for another experiment. They’ve still got me watching. Check “Bowie” out here.

10KLF, July 22-25, 2009It’s not just for the hippies anymore! Minnesota premiere annual summer celebration of festival music has announced it’s return for 2009, and in the tradition of other “jam-festivals” like Bonaroo, their adding a bit more diversity to their lineup. In addition to yearly staples such as Trampled By Turtles, Umphrey’s McGee, and Wookiefoot, this years’ 10KLF will feature performances by big-name artists DMB, Widespread Panic, and alt-country heros Wilco. Even Minneapolis-based Cloud Cult will be performing. My personal favorite of the list is Mississippi river folk-punk William Elliot Whitmore. Who are you excited to see? The party’s worth it every year, and this year it seems like the organizers have finally put together a promising enough itinerary to ensure it’ll be packed. Keep reading for the full list..
