Video: Elzhi, “Deep”

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Monday, March 8, 2010 by Tim Althaus

Here are the visuals from Elzhi’s track “Deep” off of the Leftovers (Unmixedtape). I’ve said this time and time again, but I think Elzhi is one of the best emcees on the planet; there are very few cats that can rhyme as well as he does. With the last mixtape dropping, it makes me wonder if we are ever going to see Elmatic? Either way, this video is dope as hell and so is Elzhi. The track has Black Milk on the beat, and the video was directed by Gerard Victor Atillo.

UPDATE: Guru Suffers Cardiac Arrest, In a Coma

Posted in Music News with tags , , , on Thursday, March 4, 2010 by Tim Althaus

It truly saddened me to see this news come to my attention yesterday; at first I thought it was just something going around the internet, and unfortunately I found out that it was very real. According to various reports, Keith Elam (AKA Guru) suffered cardiac complications over the weekend and is now in a coma.

I personally can’t believe this. This man (along with Premier) has crafted some of my absolute favorite music; Gangstarr’s Moment of Truth is one of my favorite Hip-Hop albums of all-time, and everything this man has done is pretty much gold. My prayers go out to Guru and his family, and I hope for the absolute best and a fast recovery.

I brought this back up to the top of posts because of the fuckery that was yesterday. Guru’s nephew has come out and made it public that Solar (Guru’s right hand man and producer) has the rights to make all the decisions concerning Guru’s health; Solar is completely cutting off Guru’s family of information, and he won’t let the family see Guru. This truly sounds like a bunch of bullshit, and I’m sure you will feel the same way.

Live @ The Warehouse in La Crosse Tonight…

This looks to be a promising show folks; I’m really kicking myself in the ass because I forgot to ask off of work for it, so now I’m stuck working (FML). Toki Wright is bringing his nationwide Black Belt Tour to La Crosse, and my boys Hyphon & Efftupp will be the opening acts; also, the young phenom Enable Mind will be doing his thing for the audience and opening. Toki also brought along Haziq Ali and Omaur Bliss who are joining him on the road for the tour. The Doors open at 7 tickets are only $7 at the door. If you are in the La Crosse area you probably want to check this show out. Trust me.

*Above I have links to all of the artist’s websites above, and below I have Hyphon & Efftupp’s mix Hurry Up & Wait Vol. 1.

Little Brother Takes a “Curtain Call”

Posted in Audio, Downloads with tags , , , , , on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 by Tim Althaus

If every day could start out with a new Little Brother track, it would surely be a great day. “Curtain Call” is the first single off of LB’s new album Leftback which drops on April 20th, and it features Khrysis the Animal on the boards. This is definitely a real nice track, but it hurts me to think that this will be the last time we will hear a full length album from Phonte & Big Pooh. You will hear Phonte & Big Pooh spitting their usual dope verses, but at the end of the song Phonte shouts out some of the acts that he feels will be able to carry the torch; some of the names might surprise you.

Big shouts to Nah Right on the find.

Reflection Eternal, “In This World” + Video Trailer

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Media, Video with tags , , , , on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 by Tim Althaus

Every once in awhile, a track will come along that makes me shake my head in sheer astonishment; this track is definitely one of them. I’ve been waiting for a new Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek record for a long time. These two single handedly changed many of my thoughts on Hip-Hop music. The gods answered my prayers (and those of many others), and Reflection Eternal will be dropping their new album Revolutions Per Minute on April 6th. I read somewhere that The Source already gave this album four and a half mics; if every track on this album follows the same formula as “In This World”, I’m having absolutely no problems believing that.

Hi-Tek’s production jumps out at me and I’m frozen like a deer in headlights; Tek concocts a skin crawling beat complete with a beautiful soul sample and brain bruising synthesizer notes. Talib proves that he’s still one of the best to do it on the microphone, “Aye yo’, I grab the mic until my hands develop the calluses/my style is bent/I only see myself and John Malkovich/my grind miraculous, rhyme from slums to palaces/facin’ all my challenges, raising the black power fist.”

I don’t know about you, but this track has me in awe. I have a strong feeling that Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek are going to make another album worthy of instant classic status; afterall, they are one of the greatest pairings in the game of Hip-Hop. Also included below is the video trailer for “In This World”; the visuals for this video look very impressive.

J Dilla x Stussy Documentary Part 3

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Monday, March 1, 2010 by Tim Althaus

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Sorry for the pause in posting people, but there really hasn’t been anything that has spiked my interest a great deal in the last week. This video; however, is a much different story. This is the third and final part of Stussy’s documentary on J Dilla; this video pertains to Jay making beats and how he progressed his sound and where Jay got a lot of his sounds from. I love hearing Dave Cooley breaking down what it was like to work with Dilla in the studio; I can’t imagine what it was like to see that man doing his best work. House Shoes mentions another crazy fact: Dilla made most of his tracks in just about fifteen minutes. That shit is nuts. Big ups to Stussy and Stones Throw for collaborating to tell the story of one of the greatest minds music has ever seen.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Here’s the latest video from Ramble John Krohn, and this one comes to us from his latest outing, The Colossus. The track is called “The Glow”, but to be honest, I have no idea where they got the idea for this video. I definitely like the track, and I was also a big fan of the new album. If you haven’t picked up The Colossus, you probably should do so as we speak.

Album Review: Freeway & Jake One, The Stimulus Package

Posted in Music Reviews, Video with tags , , , , , , on Monday, February 22, 2010 by Tim Althaus

If this album doesn’t prove that Rhymesayers Entertainment is one of the most dominant forces in Hip-Hop, I truly don’t know what will. I remember hearing about this album at Soundset last year, and even then, I knew that this pairing was going to be something special. After hearing these two collaborate on White Van Music, it was quite evident that Freeway & Jake One needed to do more work together. I still have quite a few albums I am highly anticipating, but I can assure you that this album is going to remain in my top 10 for the year; it’s just that good. Continue reading

Jay Electronica Performs “Exhibit C” in Amsterdam

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , on Monday, February 22, 2010 by Tim Althaus

Shouts to Nah Right on this footage. I have to admit that the sound quality isn’t spectacular, but it doesn’t take long to notice that the crowd in Amsterdam is really into this guy. If you haven’t heard “Exhibit C”, please do yourself a favor and glue headphones to your ears with the track on repeat.

On a separate note, where the hell is Act 2: Patents of Nobility?

Evidence, “To Be Continued…”

Posted in Audio, Downloads with tags , , , , on Monday, February 22, 2010 by Tim Althaus

This made my day on Saturday when I found it, and I definitely want to give a big up to Shake over at 2DopeBoyz. I’ve been itching for some new Mr. Slow Flow material since The LAyover EP dropped, and it looks as though my prayers have been answered. Apparently, Premo dropped this track on his radio station the other night, and from what I’ve read, this track will not be featured on Cats & Dogs; either way you look at it, this track is dope as hell, but I already knew that was the case because it’s EV.
