Mogwai in Minneapolis: Barry Burns’ Radio K in-studio, live First Ave. bootleg online

Posted in Audio, Downloads with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on Friday, June 5, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Minneapolis is showing some love for Mogwai. It’s been a month since the Scottish post-rockers came to play the mainroom in First Avenue, and in the meantime some great audio from their stay in the city is slowly leaking from the city.

Before Mogwai took the stage on May 10th, Barry Burns stopped by U of M’s Radio K for half an hour to take over the dials and give an exclusive interview to our fine University during the broadcast of nowlikephotographs. Check it:

And the best find of all? Empty’s Tapes linked to an exclusive live audio bootleg at The Trader’s Den that captures the band’s First Avenue performance in glorious clarity. It’s worth the download for any fan of the band; all you have to do is register for free and you can start torrenting!

Album Review: Power of 2, Power of 2

Posted in Music Reviews with tags , , , , , , , , , on Thursday, June 4, 2009 by Ryan Buege

From my point of view, there are only two reasons why any instrumental rock band would choose to remain vox-less these days: 1) they are Power of 2frightened that vocals would destroy the aesthetic they’ve developed, or 2) they don’t have time for a fucking vocalist! ¶ Power of 2, a Minneapolis based prog-rock band featuring Max Becker on drums and Joe Clark on guitar, clearly falls into the latter school, as evidenced by the new self-titled album of driving, explosive, ball-bustin’ rock ‘n’ roller coaster rides they’ve nailed down for release on Friday.  It’s a guitar centric album (vocals finally make an extremely brief appearance on the final track, “Eight Chupacabras”)  that simply has no room for a third wheel to disrupt the charging energy that pulses between the two, one jperson seemingly acting as a anode and the other as a cathode . Concert Recap: Victims, Trap Them, and Black Breath @ the Triple Rock Social Club

Victims live at the Triple Rock

Victims, Trap Them, and Black Breath stormed through Minneapolis yesterday evening with what could easily be called the most vicious hardcore tour making rounds in the U.S. early this summer, and all bands displayed an overwhelming presence despite the underwhelming crowd size (..for better or worse, I’m speculating that a local concert calendar that is more saturated than usual with hardcore shows courtesy of the ENR 15th Anniversary and tightening working class budgets are to blame..). However simply put, Victims were on top of their game, Trap Them proved to be more than worthy of the praise that has been thrown of them by some of extreme noise music’s most respected names (these days Napalm Death and Disfear even cite them as influences, to give you an idea), and Black Breath, while young, introduced the crusty part of my evening with a heavy swagger rocking through their dirty modern hardcore. Personally, I just felt lucky to be one of the few who got to pit it up to the live tornado of chaos contained within the cavernous club in west bank Minneapolis for one night; and lucky for you lazy punks, I brought my camera and captured some guerilla style videos and photos from the show which follow below:

Santigold live at First Avenue

There isn’t much that could be said about the lovable enthusiastic crowd-pleasing performance from Santigold at First Avenue this Thursday (May 28, 2009) that wasn’t recapped already. Santi’s main man Jon Jon (..same dude that got that extended shout out from the stage; seriously how’s she know know that well, man?) compiled a great list of links of people who have already reviewed the night, so I’m doing my best to bring something unique to you all.

As such, here’s my view from the night via video and photos, right from the middle of the dance floor; somewhat out of my element, I’ll just say that I was made to feel right at home amongst the flailing arms and sweat bodies by the time the show hit full stride. We’ll start things off with “Creator”, and get this MPLS internet dance party started like no other….

We still have more Mind Inversion exclusive live video of the hit “L.E.S. Artistes” and more photos from the dancefloor at First Avenue after the the jump. Just click the link… Continue reading

Concert Recap: Amebix, Misery, and War//Plague @ the Triple Rock Social Club

Amebix live at the Triple Rock Social Club

Last night (Wednesday, May 27, 2009), the legendary crust-punk innovators in Amebix played to an enthusiastic crowd of local Minneapolis punks, many of whom at been waiting to see the band for nearly 25 years. Suffice to say, it was the perfect choice to help celebrate the 15th Anniversary of Extreme Noise Records.

The Minneapolis natives and all around cool dudes in War//Plague and Misery kicked off the festivities with some straightforward crust-punk; both bands acknowledged that Amebix was now fulfilling a lifetime dream. I couldn’t agree with them more; it was simply an honor to be able to rock out with such influential musicians as a person who has grown to adore what they first pioneered. Even after 25 years apart, there’s no signs of age or inadequacy, as the songs were breathing with new life in front of the overly joyous packed house of crusties. And just to give credit where credits due, I believe Roy Mayorga (ex-Nausea, Thorn, Soulfly, Sepultura, etc.) must be commended for the thunderous backdrop he lays down for the band, as well; it was completely unexpected to see him behind the kit, but as the flying bodies proved, he definitely belonged there.

Additionally, I recorded an epic video of Amebix’s “Chain Reaction” (No Gods… No masters!!!!) that can be viewed directly below. Keep reading the whole post to catch the photos that I captured, as well as a live video from Misery.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs premiere “Heads Will Roll” music video

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , , , , on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Vodpod videos no longer available.

It’s the year where the Yeah Yeah Yeahs make their inevitable blitz for the immortality in the rock ‘n’ roll history books, and the trio will be here in Minneapolis to play a highly anticipated, promptly-sold-out show at First Avenue. However, before this mini-US tour kicks off and they grace us with their live presence, they’ve decided to tease us all a bit and show us what to expect (minus a live werewolf, hopefully). By now, this irresistible song should be etched in your brain, but this Richard Ayoade directed visual accompaniment definitely launches the track to an even more unforgettable level of theatrics.

Watch the video above for “Heads Will Roll” from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs new album It Blitz!, and try to hold tight til they hit the stage on Saturday…

Concert Recap: Everybell & Whistle, The Tanks, Be Kind To Your Neighbor, Jabberjosh, and Slapping Purses @ Big V’s

Everybell & Whistle live at Big V's

Among Twin Cities residents, it’s well known that an appreciation for the arts permeates our community to an almost absurd degree compared to Everybell & Whistle live at Big V'smany other cities in this nation. After moving from the smaller community of Winona to the cities four years ago, I began to really realize how much the arts tend to be integrate into the lives of the people in the area.

Truthfully, over half of my coworkers I’ve had since moving here have been playing in an active band while working the day job at FxO. At one point, literally the entire staff was playing music at some capacity!

I’m always psyched when one of them is playing a show for a variety of reasons; not only is it a great excuse for out-of-work co-worker bonding and free drink tickets (wink, wink), it’s an opportunity to support truly independent local music at the venues that deserve it. On Saturday, my bud Jacob (drummer for Everybell and Whistle) was able to coax me into checking out the sweet post-hardcore/math-rock  that he plays in, and so I set out to Big V’s for a night of abrasive noise rock.

Performances came from local dudes in Slapping Purses, Jabberjosh from Kansas, and Iowa’s Be Kind To Your Neighbor The Tanks, and Everybell and Whistle headlined the night. These are some photos that I took while trying to preserve my Flat Earth Cygnus X-1 Porter from the moshpit…

Northern Outpost Season 2, Episode 2: Lucy Michelle & the Velvet Lapelles

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , on Friday, May 22, 2009 by Ryan Buege

By this point in time, I’m pretty sure that anyone and everyone interested in the music made by Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles in this city should have caught wind of what they’re doing – so I won’t waste space trying to hook you in. Instead, just enjoy this clip of this super creative local art rock powerhouse in HD. It’s rare to witness a band like this captured so vividly in such intimate quarters, and this episode is solid proof that Maxwell Becker needs to be commended for creating such an amazing addition to the Minneapolis music and art community. As always, I’m waiting patiently to see what gems the Owl Recording Studio and Northern Outpost cherry pick out of the Minneapolis music community throughout the rest of the season.

Earth Crisis concert photos at Station 4 via Degross Punk Photography

This is the second time I’ve posted about a local punk and hardcore show that was captured by Degross Punk Photography, and there’s something about the vividness of Degross’s photographs that I don’t think I’ll ever get over.

Head over to his blog to view his entire set from the recent Earth Crisis headlined gig with Walls of Jericho, Reign Supreme, Unholy, and Blood Stands Still at Station 4 in St. Paul.
