Sonic Youth “Sacred Trickster” music video maintains the independent feeling

I still haven’t posted up my review of Sonic Youth’s The Eternal yet, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop plugging this album like nobody’s business anytime soon.

As someone who also constantly picks through the vinyl bins at the local record stores (often admittedly running across various used releases by SY, Thurston, and such), I couldn’t help but laugh at the band find their new album The Eternal for sale in the used bin on the streets only a few days after it’s release. Staged or not, the suggestion it implies is equally fantastic either way.

After moving to Matador for The Eternal following a long string of major label releases, the band’s video also reflects a renewed kinship for the independent spirit of the band’s earlier days. It’s a low budget, yet punchy number that shows some glaring similarities to a certain scene from Pontecorvo’s stunning 1967 masterpiece La battaglia di Algeri; I’m wondering if it’s an homage, but in short, it’s some great imagery to complement the confident, bouncy swagger of Gordon on “Sacred Trickster” and adds even another layer of depth to a taut track that’s already exploding with sound.

Mid-week late night viewing party: Sonic Youth, Rancid, and Blink 182

Last night, I only had the time to watch Sonic Youth jam on a more abrasive version of “Sacred Trickster” for their glorious new album The Eternal (review probably pending) on the Late Show with David Letterman before I hit the hay. However, for those who have been paying attention, this week has certainly been a good one for fans of the mid-90s alternative rock scene, as Conan O’Brien hosted an appearance from Rancid last night and Jimmy Kimmel featured a reunion performance from Blink 182 consisting of only classic songs from their back catalog on Tuesday. Since I was too sleepy to watch it all, I’ve rounded up all the videos for you to watch here this afternoon. We begin with the best:

Mastodon unveil music video for “Oblivion”

Mastodon continues to impress with their spacey music video for “Oblivion” from the new album Crack the Skye, their third video helmed by psychedelic guru Roboshobo. Truthfully, their partnership seems to be paying off, because the man(?) has been able to consistently accomplish the seemingly impossible task of creating a visual document that accurately translates the incredibly visual auditory experience of Mastodon’s music. If Mastodon’s Crack the Skye concept movie really does take shape, we can be sure that Roboshobo will deliver with one of his own picture perfect interpretations if he’s the one behind it…

Northern Oupost, Episode 11, Summer 2009: The Falcon Arrow

Not too long ago, Minneapolis art-rock duo The Falcon Arrow stopped by the Owl Recording Studio to record an interview and in studio performance for the best TC-based multiple camera music show to ever grace web, and on Friday (June 5) their feature was released for public consumption as Northern Outpost‘s 11th episode. This episode proved to be one of my favorites so far, with a candid interview that emphasized some of the struggles of being an independent band in a city that’s already crowded many good ones and one of the most inventive music sets that’s been showcased yet. Through its sparse rhythm-only arrangement, the music of The Falcon Arrow is far removed from the style of post-rock that many of you are used to, yet it still possesses the same entrancing buildups and soothing come-downs that define the genre’s greatest moments. I pressed play not expecting more than a simple indie rock band, and when the replay screen finally came up I was still trying to comprehend how the looping bass of Matt Reintz was able to produce such a beautiful racket..

In two weeks Northern Outpost will be back with Episode 12 with Speed’s The Name, and I’m very excited to see that my buds in Empires will be showcasing their epic, ethereal doom metal for Episode 13. If you enjoy the highest quality music the Twin Cities have to offer, it looks like Max Becker and Northern Outpost have a stellar summer lineup in store for you. Stay tuned to find else what else is on the horizon…

As part of the media blitz for the album release, Sonic Youth seems to have taken up a residency at Pitchfork.tv for the week. Today, things kick off with the band playing two brand news songs, “Antenna” and “Sacred Trickster”, live in the extremely intimate (aka cramped and confined) filming studio for the low-budget A>D>D series…

Narrows, the “Gypsy Kids” of post-hardcore

Narrows may be new kids on the block to the hardcore and metal scene, but the band’s individual members have been paying their dues for a long time. The band features members of Botch, These Arms Are Snakes, Some Girls and more among its ranks, and they have finally put together a music video for “Gypsy Kids” from their debut album New Distances with some handicams, iMovie, and a little bit of elbow grease. Obviously not for the faint of heart or weak-minded, I’d say the combination of sobering artistry, epic heaviness, super awesome guitar production, and extreme brutality showcased on this video verify that they’re a perfect fit for the Deathwish Inc. imprint that this Mind Inversion blogger already respects so much. Watch if you dare!

Concert Recap: Victims, Trap Them, and Black Breath @ the Triple Rock Social Club

Victims, Trap Them, and Black Breath stormed through Minneapolis yesterday evening with what could easily be called the most vicious hardcore tour making rounds in the U.S. early this summer, and all bands displayed an overwhelming presence despite the underwhelming crowd size (..for better or worse, I’m speculating that a local concert calendar that is more saturated than usual with hardcore shows courtesy of the ENR 15th Anniversary and tightening working class budgets are to blame..). However simply put, Victims were on top of their game, Trap Them proved to be more than worthy of the praise that has been thrown of them by some of extreme noise music’s most respected names (these days Napalm Death and Disfear even cite them as influences, to give you an idea), and Black Breath, while young, introduced the crusty part of my evening with a heavy swagger rocking through their dirty modern hardcore. Personally, I just felt lucky to be one of the few who got to pit it up to the live tornado of chaos contained within the cavernous club in west bank Minneapolis for one night; and lucky for you lazy punks, I brought my camera and captured some guerilla style videos and photos from the show which follow below:
