May Sound Immersion

The team here at Mind Inversion are back to offer you faithfuls another monthly mix tape. This month we’re going with a summer theme. Some of songs feature summer in the title, and others simply remind us of this time of year. Though it’s not yet 90 and humid here, the end of the spring semester just screams summer!  I just barely managed to stay sane throughout my first year, and many of the other contributors have also been working diligently towards their degrees. The picture is a nice reminder of Mind Inversion’s home here in the midwest, a place most of us will be at for at least part of the summer. So let’s all celebrate with this terrific mix, dedicated to the greatest time of the year. Enjoy the sun, enjoy the freedom, but most of all enjoy the music!

And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead unveil new music video, “Isis Unveiled”

Vodpod videos no longer available.

…And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead are back at it this month with a new music video from their album called The Century of Self (released in February), and while they’ve left the major label behind for this one, they still clearly haven’t forgotten the breathtaking bombast that made their subtle psychedelics so appealing to the majors in the first place. On their new music video for “Isis Unveiled”, the Texas sextet charges through an epic, noisy prog-rocker as Conrad injects his sneering, the rhymthmic vocal delivery over the majestic orchestration. Aided by the simple and straightforward psychedelic imagery that they are known for, the visuals on this video extremely haunting in their delivery, with Conrad’s cold stare delivering some immediate bone-chilling realism. Not a really return to form, this is moreso a restatement that about the great aspects of the Trail of Dead that never really left. The Trail of Dead are clearly sick of being kicked while their down, and now that they’re back standing on their own feet (aka independet label), I doubt they’re going to be letting anyone knock them back over anytime soon. If my music senses are still working correctly, I’d say that this band still has a few classics on their hands…

Ryan B.’s 25 Most Influential Albums (in haiku)

Ryan's Most Influential Albums

Finally, we are at the end of March, and the time has come for me to put the closing bell on the Mind Inversion tribute to the recently popular Facebook meme on your most influential albums. I’ll have you know that, like most lists I make, the albums for this list were brainstormed rather quickly, and I think that’s a good thing. If an album were actually as influential as I thought, their importance should be fairly easy for me to recall. Truthfully, I’ve never really become too embarrassed about any album that I own; sure, I may have made some questionable choices in my youngest years, but somehow I’ve always seemed to have a remarkably good bullshit detector when it comes to music. What follows is a journey through the albums that had the biggest impact on forming my tastes and such over the years. If you really love the music I post about, read on for a brief reverse-chronological (moreorless) recounting of my most influential albums. For better or worse, I’ve written them out as haikus for your enjoyment!

25. Nachtmystium, Assassins: Black Meddle, Part I

Sick, twisted, subtle
Black metal psychedelia
With soul of Pink Floyd

24. Deerhunter, Cryptograms

Melodies so sweet
And a massive wall of noise!
A new Sonic Youth?

…Trail of Dead schedules 2009 tour; prepares new album

Posted in Music News with tags , , on Friday, January 30, 2009 by Ryan Buege

I’m probably not the only one surprised to say it, but …And You Know Us By the Trail of Dead is soon releasing a new album and will be stopping in the Metro area to play some of the songs from Century of Self in the live setting. In the course of my time listening to the band, I”ve seen highs and lows that are unparalleled to what I’ve seen from any other band. From their aural genius on their early albums through to literally seeing the band engage in physical fighting fueled by obvious drunken internal conflicts onstage during their appearance with the Blood Brothers a few years ago at Station 4 – it’s honestly a bit unexpected that these guys were able to keep it together for over 10 years now.  Still, I might have been writing them off a bit too early. From my point of view their last album, 2006’s  So Divided, was improved (and slightly more cohesive) from some of the missteps they made on their ambitious, meticulous Worlds Apart release in 2004. We’ve only got one song so far, so it’s hard to tell if they’re back to the glory days of S/T, Madonna, Source Tags…, and Elena…or still lost in the fog of recent years.

Either way, I’m a glass half full kind of guy, and I’ve got an open mind. To hear what Trail of Dead has brewed up this time, click here to listen to their song “Isis Unveiled” (Radio Edit) from the forthcoming album Century of Self. It will be available on Feb. 17th, so we’ll have a review when we get a copy.

Keep reading for a full list of all their tour dates, including at stop at the beloved Triple Rock in March, collected and confirmed… Continue reading
