LIVE PERFORMANCE VIDEO: Tapes ‘n Tapes, “SWM” (live at Backyard BBQ from MTV2 Twin Cities week exclusive)

According to Gimme Noise, the Minneapolis metropolitan area has taken over the airwaves at MTV2 and MTV2.com this week, where they’ll be hosting interviews and performances that they taped two weeks ago during Soundset and such. To start the week off, Subterranean has posted a video of the local boys in Tapes ‘n Tapes showing off their acoustic skills on a rendition of “SWM”. Pay attention to MTV2.com throughout the week for more performances with TC artists such as P.O.S., Mike Mictlan, and more.

For today, I’m back with a round-up of the week in music videos and live performances that I cared to watch (except for one – if I find a d/l of the awesome Faith No More set from Download Festival that I live-streamed, I’ll be sure to post it later). Enjoy the list I’ve compiled; you’ll need to set aside a good chunk of time if you want to watch them all!

Ryan B.’s 25 Most Influential Albums (in haiku)

Ryan's Most Influential Albums

Finally, we are at the end of March, and the time has come for me to put the closing bell on the Mind Inversion tribute to the recently popular Facebook meme on your most influential albums. I’ll have you know that, like most lists I make, the albums for this list were brainstormed rather quickly, and I think that’s a good thing. If an album were actually as influential as I thought, their importance should be fairly easy for me to recall. Truthfully, I’ve never really become too embarrassed about any album that I own; sure, I may have made some questionable choices in my youngest years, but somehow I’ve always seemed to have a remarkably good bullshit detector when it comes to music. What follows is a journey through the albums that had the biggest impact on forming my tastes and such over the years. If you really love the music I post about, read on for a brief reverse-chronological (moreorless) recounting of my most influential albums. For better or worse, I’ve written them out as haikus for your enjoyment!

25. Nachtmystium, Assassins: Black Meddle, Part I

Sick, twisted, subtle
Black metal psychedelia
With soul of Pink Floyd

24. Deerhunter, Cryptograms

Melodies so sweet
And a massive wall of noise!
A new Sonic Youth?

Neko Case’s “People Got a Lotta of Nerve” receives moving visual accompaniment

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , , , on Monday, March 23, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Usually when I watch a film, I like to play like a critic and try to really “interpret” what the director is trying to get across. Some people prefer to simply enjoy a movie for its visual pleasures, but understanding the intricate aspects of editing and directing tends to provide a much more fulfilling viewing experience to me. With the music video for Neko Case‘s “People Got A Lotta Nerve”, her lead single from the new Middle Cyclone album, it’s hard for me to even begin to come to any solid conclusions about what it’s about; but I do know that I don’t mind wondering. Girls are frollicking around and playing with every type of wild beast imaginable; everything from elephants and tigers, to dogs and monkeys, to cranes and (yes, you guessed it..) killer whales. The animation, though simple, is gorgeous, and the warm colors and cheery atmosphere make me forget why I even wonder why the red-head cartoon girl (Neko?) is trying to shoot the apes who just want to gander at pictures of Neko. It’s an adventurous piece of work, veiled in multiple meanings; a dream that has been dreamed awake.

Video: Neko Case, “Making of” Middle Cyclone

Neko case has recently posted an awesome video online previewing her new album, Middle Cyclone. This red-headed alt-country darling has my favorite female voice in music and this album looks like it should be pretty awesome; kudos to her for what appears to be an extremely organic recording process. I’m sure the atmosphere of the barn amplified the musicians sound quite nicely. Middle Cyclone will be available on March 3, 2009.
