This mix was produced entirely by Astronote and is hosted by DJ Graffiti. This might be some of the best Biggie remix material you will hear. Download this now.

Poison the Well, “Bowie” posted online

Posted in Music News with tags on Thursday, January 22, 2009 by Ryan Buege

New music from Poison the Well’s latest release, the 7-inch vinyl II/III (available starting yesterday, January 20th) , has surfaced online in the form of “Bowie” at the band’s myspace page. You might have guessed from the title, but the album release is the second in a series of three 7-inch releases of unheard material from the Versions sessions in 2007. As you will hear, “Bowie” shows that the band definitely ventured even farther in their experimental path than final version of Versions might have indicated. It’s progressive, emotional, “heavy” stuff, but still I’m really hard-pressed to believe that this is the SAME band that brought us the intense metalcore classic The Opposite of December… oh, soooooo long ago. Either way, no one else has taken the path that PTW has, and that alone is something to be admired. With the next LP release on the horizon, I’m looking forward to see if the decide to push the new sound of Versions and the 7-inch series even farther or abandon it completely for another experiment. They’ve still got me watching. Check “Bowie” out here.

10KLF adds Dave Matthews Band, Widespread Panic, and Wilco to lineup

10KLF, July 22-25, 2009It’s not just for the hippies anymore! Minnesota premiere annual summer celebration of festival music has announced it’s return for 2009, and in the tradition of other “jam-festivals” like Bonaroo, their adding a bit more diversity to their lineup. In addition to yearly staples such as Trampled By Turtles, Umphrey’s McGee, and Wookiefoot, this years’ 10KLF will feature performances by big-name artists DMB, Widespread Panic, and alt-country heros Wilco. Even Minneapolis-based Cloud Cult will be performing. My personal favorite of the list is Mississippi river folk-punk William Elliot Whitmore. Who are you excited to see? The party’s worth it every year, and this year it seems like the organizers have finally put together a promising enough itinerary to ensure it’ll be packed. Keep reading for the full list.. Video: Evidence, “For Whom The Bell Tolls” (Behind The Scenes)

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Here is some behind the scenes action with Evidence, Phonte, and Will.I.Am behind the scenes of the “For Whom the Bell Tolls” music video shoot. If you decided to get one of the best releases of last year (The LAyover EP) then you know that this was one of the only videos not featured on the DVD. To be honest I laughed my ass off when Evidence was talking to Phonte about exfoliation, that shit is downright hilarious. Check out this video because it provides some great laughs. I can’t wait to see the video when it’s done, you know for sure that I will have it up as soon as it premiers.

Video: Jadakiss (featuring Faith Evans) “Letter to B.I.G.”

This video makes me very happy. I am glad to see Jadakiss back on the scene because he’s one hell of an artist. Faith Evans also lends her beautiful voice in the dedication to her ex-husband. This song has a great beat with a nice electric guitar loop, and Kiss is very potent and on-point (as always) about his old friend. Give this song a great listen because it’s a great tribute, and go check out NOTORIOUS which is out now.

Album Review: Bon Iver – “Blood Bank EP”

Posted in Music Reviews with tags , , , , , on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 by Erik Burg

blood-bak-coverBon Iver’s Sophmore effort, following the magnificent 2008 release “For Emma, Forever Ago” changes pace in certain spots, trading the beautiful vocals for Weezy-esque auto tuning. I know, a big step (forward or back?) for a guy who was so unbelievably harmonic and damn near perfect on his first album. As far as the auto tuning goes, and if those tracks are successful or not, it’s sort of a wash. The scratchy guitar and minimal backup instruments still amaze, despite being slightly repetitive of the first album, but the vocals bring down what would otherwise be an amazing EP. “Woods” and “Babys,” the two tracks the Justin Vernon goes lil wayne on your ass, are the low point of the album, like I mentioned, but the other two tracks, “Blood Bank” and “Beach Baby” pick up exactly where Emma left off. The title and lead track “Blood Bank” is arguably Vernon’s best track to date, drifting along with beautiful vocals, heart-wrenching lyrics, and the usual acoustic minimalism. “Beach Baby” sounds like something from an old Pet Sounds cut, and while it obviously isn’t, it again changes pace a little from the usual back-woods Wisconsin folk. Dropping the vocals and picking up the pace of the song a little bit, Bon Iver takes a short little trip down instrumental lane, if only for two and a half minutes.

Not much else to this review, seeing as it’s just an EP. It’s definitely worth checking out though, for fans of his past material or for someone who’s never heard the greatest thing to come out of Eau Claire county since ever (maybe). If nothing else, at least give “Blood Bank” a spin, it’ll give any new fan the best idea of what Vernon is all about, and what made “For Emma, Forever Ago” one of the best albums of last year.

One Week Only: Joy Division

Posted in Video with tags , , , on Monday, January 19, 2009 by Erik Burg

joy-division-docAs some of you might be aware of, Pitchfork Media has their own internet t.v. station called, well, pitchfork.tv. The station runs various live concerts, music videos, interviews and the such as you might expect, but one cool feature of the site is that it streams different movies or documentaries each week. The segment is called “One Week Only” (the creative guys over at p4k don’t seem to be too creative lately) and like I mentioned, it actually shows some pretty cool movies. This week though, One Week Only has hit its peak, premiering the wonderful documentary “Joy Division.” I’ll keep on pace with the whole not creative thing and point out that the title of the movie is exactly what the movie is about. The documentary follows the rise and fall of one of the greatest and most influential bands of all time, Joy Division, and the beyond crazy antics and visions of lead singer Ian Curtis.

This documentary has been critically acclaimed and I certainly found out why when I watched it. There are countless interviews from the members, managers, and everyone seemingly ever involved. There are of course rare live video footage and images that are able to keep the documentary flowing and keep the viewer interested, because let’s face it, documentaries always get a little dry. So yeah, give it a shot and see what this segment and Joy Division are all about. Enjoy!

Sunday Metal Video: Sepultura, “Arise (Live in Barcelona, 1991)”

Posted in Sunday Metalhead Minute with tags , , , , , on Monday, January 19, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Sepultura, is releasing their next album A-Lex this week (their first without a contribution from EITHER Cavalera brother, who have now rejoined together in the band Cavalera Conspiracy). Although Sepultura 2.0 has undeniably made an exceptionally good album, Sepultura with the Cavalera brothers was untouchable. In fact, I would confidently stand behind the statement that 1989-1996 era Sepultura provided the greatest output of any metal band of all-time. Today, we take a look back at the band to their peak to celebrate this unbelievable, visionary band.. this is their classic “Arise” taken from Sepultura’s original VHS release, Under Siege.
