The Chairs cover Bon Iver and swing through La Crosse next month

I’ve heard a few tracks from these guys in the past and their debut EP was a real treat, now The Chairs are planning a short tour at the end of March. The new track is another spectacular cover (they also covered Neutral Milk Hotel a few months ago). This time the guys take a stab at Bon Iver’s beautiful song “Flume” of his debut album. It works out pretty well too, I mean sure, the empty and echoing feelings of the hollow Wisconsin woods are gone but they’re traded for soothing synths and guitar’s of the electric kind. If you haven’t heard these guys yet this track is a decent gauge of their sound, they have a certain spookiness that I can’t really describe. So check it out for sure

And if you enjoy this sample be sure to see them on their tour next month. They’re sweeping through the midwest on a short tour, and they’ll be hitting La Crosse on March 26th. Their show is at Viterbo University, too bad places like the Warehouse can’t bring in acts like this, La Crosse is a town anxious for concerts like this one, and I hope there is a great turn out for these guys. So go out and support great music, whether it’s at their La Crosse show or any of their midwest stops, it’ll be worth your time.

A debut album is set to be released March 17th, so the tour should be featuring plenty of new material. King Khan & the Shrines announce U.S. release of What Is?!

The long running Berlin, Germany by way of French Canada garage-soul-rock band, King Khan and the Shrines, have announced a US release for their 2007 album What Is?! through their US label Vice Records. What many people might not know is that the recent The Supreme Genius Of album was simply a greatest hits compilation of songs that Khan has already released across the pond. This is why, as you might notice, several of the beloved songs from that release from last year are also on this full length album

It’s great that What Is?! will get to see the light of day as their second release through Vice. Look for it on April 21, 2009. Right now, you can listen to a few of the tracks on the band’s MySpace page. .

Napalm Death/Trap Them and Have Heart book U.S. tours; fail to schedule MN dates

Sometimes life just isn’t fair.

Yesterday my email box was filled with newsletters from some of the best modern hardcore bands on the plant, with subject lines boldly proclaiming that they had just announced U.S. tour dates. Gleefully I click the one that announces “Napalm Death / Toxic Holocaust / Trap Them” dates (because, if you haven’t heard, all three of these bands have brilliant new albums out), and much to my dismay they’ve decided to leapfrog the Midwest and totally forgot to book a MN date. Really, why would you hit up Milwaukee and Chicago and forget about Minneapolis/St. Paul on your way out west?

On the other hand, at least you can go see Napalm Death grind in support of Enslavement in if you really want to make the journey; our friends in Have Heart have decided to bypass our region entirely, jumping from the the northeast, Michigan, and Canada directly to California and the west coast. It’s too bad this stellar hardcore band forgot about us, but I’m hoping the next message I get from Bridge 9 will have some love for the fans in Minnesota.

Cage to Offer a Slew of Material

It appears as though your favorite wierdo indie Hip-Hop emcee, Cage,  is going to be dropping a wealth of material in the months to come. His follow up to 2005’s classic Hell’s Winter, Depart From Me is dropping on June 30th via Def Jux. You may say, “Wow Tim… That’s a hell of a long time to wait for another album from Cage.” My answer to that statement is, “Well thank god for all of us, he is going to be dropping an EP this spring.”

The EP is going to be called I Never Knew You and it is going to contain seven tracks. Of course, Shia LaBeouf will be directing the video for the EP’s title track. As some of you may recall, Shia & Cage are supposed to be working on a biopic of Cage’s life. I’ve been looking all over for updates on the movie because Cage has had one of the craziest lives that you could ever imagine.

I can personally tell you that Depart From Me is a release that I have been itching for the last couple of years. Hell’s Winter was an instant classic and I think Cage is one of the most talented individuals on the Def Jux roster. By the way things look, Cage could dominate 2009. Make sure you watch out for this material because it is sure to please, and of course watch for the review at Mind Inversion once the material is out.  Also, if you didn’t already check my man Erik’s post of the lead single “Nothing Left To Say”, which was produced by El-Producto, here.

Jam Session for Ma Dukes

This video was shot back in January when Suite for Ma Dukes was being prepared. This Sunday February 22nd, the Suite for Ma Dukes will be going down with a 36 piece orchestra in LA. If I was in the area there is absolutely no way that I would miss this show, it’s going to be an amazing representation of a legend’s music. In the video you can here these guys putting together a “from scratch” version of Slum Village “Fall in Love“. It sounds like this album is going to have a very nostalgic feel to it, and I can wait to hear it. You can download the EP on iTunes here. Make sure you grab the album and keep listening to Dilla, because February is Dilla month. TURN IT UP!
