SOJA Strength to Survive

Posted in Music News, News with tags , , on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 by Eric Gilardi

In this dismal season of album releases January has been less than significant. This is usually the case and I know people are probably just dying waiting for something worthwhile and fresh to come out. I did a little digging and found out SOJA are releasing their forthcoming album Strength to Survive a week from today on the last day of January. If you like reggae music with a ska feel you should lend them your ears for just a couple of minutes.

It seems that the Virginia based band is focused on proving that reggae is more than just a joint passing soundtrack to this laid back lifestyle. They are bringing real messages and consider themselves to be more along the likes of folk artists. SOJA is providing the message of building strength amongst the people of the world and it is only fitting that they titled their new album Strength to Survive. After all, the true meaning and purpose of reggae is to bring peace to the world.

Paid Dues 2012 Announced!

That’s right folks; The Paid Dues Festival has released their official lineup for the 2012 concert series. There are definitely some heavy hitters on this bill; those who attend can expect to see Wu-Tang Clan, Dilated Peoples, Kendrick Lamar and The Living Legends, just to name a few. The one thing that I love about festivals like Paid Dues and Rock The Bells is that they do a great job of highlighting acts on both coasts of the country. Even though I’m not huge on acts like Odd Future and Dipset, I would still love to make a trip out to California to see this epic bill of artists because honestly, Hip-Hop festivals are for the children.

M.i (Feat. ScienZe), “Bubble” (Prod. By M.i)

These last couple of leaks off of The Coldplay Sessions is really starting to get me amped for February 7th; M.i just dropped “Bubble” a few days ago, and I can honestly say that I’m digging the hell out of it. As I’ve mentioned before, M.i has a super laid back flow, and he makes it very easy to like his music. He brings along Brooklyn native Scienze to do some damage on his beautiful jazz influenced beat. This Austin native is becoming one of my favorite emcees; this dude has skills on the mic and the production boards, and that’s not easy to come by.

This music festival happens in the backyard of the Midwest. It is located in Chillicothe, Illinois and takes place from May 25th-27th this year. Summer Camp offers you the 3-day camping festival at a very nice price. If you were fortunate enough to grab early bird passes or advanced early bird passes then you already know you got one hell of a deal. Tickets are priced at a nice cool price of $174.20 for the time being. They offer lay a way so you can take your time paying off your ticket to a great time. Join the pre-party on Thursday and it is a $33 add-on but this allows you into the grounds a day earlier to help you find your new front door.

Head over to the website and check out this years line-up.

Welcome To Slept On Saturdays at Mind Inversion

Posted in Album Download, Media, Slept on Saturdays with tags , , , on Saturday, January 21, 2012 by Tim Althaus

Do you ever find that there’s music that you criminally slept on (see: The Only Color That Matters is Green) ? More often than not, I end up finding out about a project that I managed to neglect for some reason or another. I was looking for a weekly column that I could do, and I feel like Slept On Saturdays is the perfect idea. Every Saturday I’m going to take the opportunity to shed some light on a mixtape, album or track that I overlooked because of sheer obliviousness. After all, the saying goes, “it’s better late than never”. Continue reading

Music Discovery: Knife Party “Internet Friends”

Knife Party is the side project from Pendulum’s duo Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen. Their song “Internet Friends” has been catching fire since its initial release in the Summer of 2011. It was remixed and re-released on their EP 100% No Modern Talking in December of ’11. The 4-track EP is available for a free download on their Facebook page. Again, it is free and if you have ever heard of Pendulum you might as well join the Knife Party.

Video: Will Sessions, Mix Takes: Take One & Take Two

If you don’t know who Will Sessions is these days, you might be living underneath a rock. The funk outfit from Detroit that instrumentally crafted Elzhi’s Elmatic has been doing big things over the last two years; these two videos are no different. In both takes of the Mix Takes, you will see Will Sessions re-creating some of their favorite jams in real-time on video; this is something that is a must see for anyone that is a real Hip-Hop head. Scattered throughout you will hear some Dilla, Main Source, Nas, Slum Village and even some Herbie Hancock. You can catch Take Two after the jump. Continue reading

DJ Premier & Bumpy Knuckles, “wEaRe aT WaR”

DJ Premier and Bumpy Knuckles (AKA Freddie Foxxx) have dropped their latest boom-bap offering, “wEaRe aT WaR”, from their forthcoming March 27th LP The KoleXXXion. “wEaRe aT WaR” features everything you’ve come to love from DJ Premier and Mr. Foxxx; razor-sharp cuts from one of the greatest DJs the game has ever, and rhymes by Bumpy Knuckles that are rougher than 320 grit sandpaper.

Shouts to 2DopeBoyz on the find.

Also: I had to throw in the video for Gang Starr, “The Militia” because it’s a Hip-Hop essential.

Video Teaser: Evidence, “Falling Down”

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , on Thursday, January 19, 2012 by Tim Althaus

As I mentioned in the Freddie Gibbs and Madlib post the other day, I’m not usually the type of person that posts “teaser trailers”, but this is a different story. “Falling Down” is arguably my favorite track from last year, and Cats & Dogs  was my album of the year in 2011; it looks like the video (directed by Todd Angkasuwan) is going to be just as epic as the hard hitting track by Evidence and Rahki. Evidence is one of my favorite emcees in the game right now; I can’t make a negative comment about any of the material that he has put out. Make sure you watch out for the “Falling Down” video coming this Tuesday, January 24th.

Santigold Releases New Song: “Big Mouth”

Posted in Album Update, Music News, Song Download with tags , , , on Thursday, January 19, 2012 by Eric Gilardi

Santigold has finally named her much-anticipated second album Master of My Make-Believe. This album took awhile to write because she is such a perfectionist and her hands are on every aspect of her music. Santi White is the Queen B of the operation that used to go by the name of Santogold until a supposed legal allegation came about and forced the name change.

The “Big Mouth” video was released yesterday and features her famous militant dancers. These dancers are why I enjoyed the Santigold show as much as I did back in the Summer of 2009. “Big Mouth” is also available on her site for download. All you have to do is sign up for her mailing list and if you have ever listened to her music, that is a no brainer.
