Grammys: Excited or Disappointed?

Posted in Music News, News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on Sunday, January 15, 2012 by Eric Gilardi

With this year’s Grammy Awards coming up in less than a month I am unsure if indie rock and electronic music fans should be excited or disappointed in the recent popularity gains in the past few years. Just last year Arcade Fire won Album of the Year for The Suburbs. This was one of the first signs that other forms of music were gaining a mass popularity.

Now this year, you have Skrillex breaking through with the music genre and in your face sound of dubstep. The electronic artist is up for 5 Grammy’s this year, an unprecedented number for any artist in the electronic music industry. Bon Iver  the popular indie rock group fronted by Eau Claire, Wisconsin’s own Justin Vernon is up for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist to name a few. The Grammy community must think that he is a new artist because they just discovered his music or his music has gained enough popularity that we will now acknowledge you. Bon Iver’s music has been making sweet love to my ears since 2008 so it really isn’t new to me or anyone else who has had their ears violated by Bon Iver’s music. The song “Holocene” is one of my favorites from 2011 so I can see why it has elevated them to Grammy status.

What are the contributing factors to why these artists are gaining popularity? In my opinion, technology happened. As many people leave their normal avenues to discover new music this trend is going to continue. The addition of Sirius XM into many people’s homes, workplaces and automobiles has helped spread new musical knowledge. Also, music sites such as Pandora, Last.fm, Spotify and Rdio(just to name a few) have also helped in the discovery of these artists and bands. The only thing I can see good out of all this is that I might actually tune in on February 12. Will you be watching?

Elliott Smith: Lyrical Genius Even in 2012

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on Saturday, January 14, 2012 by TSN

Elliott Smith, for years has captivated me.  I seem to pick up a new album (or rather old album now) of  his every time I stumble through my apartment.  While moving some of my roommate’s shit I have found 3 Elliott Smith cd’s.  Luckily.  The curious packaging of his self-titled album and From a Basement on the Hill  had me instantly, as I am a stickler for cool marketing ideas and cd package art.  I popped the self-title in and I was taken to a place of despair and amazingly descriptive imagery, words cannot describe, literally, what his words described to my imagination.  So vivid, so brilliantly conveyed, and easily received.  As I was taken aback by his self-title album I began to play From a Basement on the Hill, to my surprise I fell in love with this album as well.  Elliott’s words speak volumes.  What his lyrics do for imagery Dali does for surrealist paintings.

I thought about his lyrics and how I could relate to the words so well.  He is not much different from the MC or the wordsmiths we see in hip-hop affiliated brainiacs; he does wonders in storytelling with emotional description.  He takes it to a new level.  I knew someone who mentioned this as a joke:  “If Elliott Smith’s knife was as dull as his music, he would still be alive today.”  At first I laughed, and took it as a joke; however, looking back now I feel this person was completely wrong, a false statement like this is deplorable.  Elliott Smith’s music is of no relation to the mundane.

Elliott Smith was a musical genius in many respects, on most of his albums he played numerous instruments, if not all, and he was influenced by the Beatles in a semi-pop poetic depressive way.  Elliot’s music is not dull as much as it is ingenious; his words, metaphors, and simile after simile, combined with beautiful and balanced thought process, delivered in the most human and self-loathing way is incredible.  I can put on any album of his and be taken into a place a little darker, a little sadder, and a little more graphic than the one I am in.  I can be taken to a real world situation as a poet takes you to a beautiful and amazing setting, or to the side of a love, or to the loneliest place where all love is lost.

Figure 8 is easily one of my favorite Elliott Smith Records.  I have been steadily listening to it for the last three months, after warming up to its pop-rock style harmony, and gritty guitar and piano melodies, I can reflect on how diverse his sound truly is.  For its release date, and setting, this album is above comparison to its contemporaries.

If you want to listen to a lyricist, musician, and unique individual with relatable ideas I suggest you listen to some Elliot Smith.  It isn’t just an Uptown thing, as much as this porn-star I know once said, he’s a music fan’s thing.  Take some time to get away from delusions of grandeur and listen to the real thing.

For anyone into melody and beautiful word choice, with an emphasis on empathy for the listener, I suggest Figure 8 , or From a Basement on the .  For anyone in search of lyrics, in relation to melancholy and criticism of ignorance, check the self-titled.  Recently, in 2010, a posthumous compilation album was released:  An Introduction to… Elliott Smith.  This one is maybe for Elliott Smith first-timers, it has some essentials and it’s relatively close to being (what I would consider) a greatest hits collection.  Not only would you be doing yourself a favor by picking any of these albums up, but you would be doing yourself justice by hooking up in vinyl.

It is said that there are hundreds more of his unreleased song recordings…

It is truly sad that such a musical talent left us so early, yet it seems realistic, and possibly predictable judging from readings of how he lived his life.  Even 9 years after his death, his words and idea still hit very close to home today.  Love lost can be described no better in verse.  Genres aside Elliot Smith was one in a billion, with and for words.

Coachella: SOLD OUT!

Posted in Music News, News with tags , , on Saturday, January 14, 2012 by Eric Gilardi

Coachella, the 3 day music festival in Indio, California, sold all of the 3 day passes, to both weekends, in just a few hours yesterday. This will leave festival goers that wanted to attend syphoning through Craigslist ads, online ticket brokers and eBay to try and purchase passes at an escalated price. With the addition of a second weekend this year you would have thought it would have been easier to obtain passes to this festival so this poses the question: Why not add a 3rd weekend or a 4th?

Here is the line up if you haven’t already checked it out:

Common Performs “Celebrate” on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon

Common recently dropped by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to perform his most recent single “Celebrate” off his latest album The Dreamer/The Believer; as usual, the Roots did an amazing job of bringing the instrumentals put forth by No I.D. to life. “Celebrate” is by far my favorite track off of The Dreamer/The Believer; to me, it’s the epitome of a feel-good song, and furthermore, it’s the type of track that makes me proud to be a fan of Hip-Hop.

Even though The Dreamer/The Believer was a late entry into the releases of 2011, it was arguably one of the best albums of the year, and I haven’t stopped listening to it since I got my hands on it; the album truly takes me back to the days of Like Water for Chocolate. The chemistry displayed between Common and No I.D. is unreal.

Dr. Dre and Monster Cable Call it Quits for “Beats By Dre”

Posted in News with tags , , , , on Friday, January 13, 2012 by Tim Althaus

It’s a sad day for the world of electronics and Hip-Hop. It has been reported that Monster Cable will no longer be pairing with Dr. Dre after this year is over; apparently, the people at Monster Cable don’t think that they are getting enough return on their investment. From the figures I’ve read, Beats accounted for 53% of the headphone market in 2011; I can honestly say that I purchased a pair of the ear buds in 2011, and I will never think of headphones the same. According to Jimmy Iovine, the split is mutual, and the whole plan all along was to have a five year contract.

Maybe since Dr. Dre is going to lose one form of cash flow, he might actually think about putting out Detox next year… I can’t believe I actually said that; we all know Detox is coming out in 2049.

Video: Classified (Feat. Joe Budden), “Unusual”

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , , on Friday, January 13, 2012 by Tim Althaus

What a great thing to come home to after a long ass day at work. Classified released the visuals for his latest single “Unusual” which was on last year’s Handshakes & Middle Fingers; the cut features Jump-Off Joe Beezy and a brain bruising beat complete with a perfectly utilized sample. “Unusual” is one of my favorite cuts off one of my favorite albums of 2011. I’ve said it time and time again, but Classified is one of the most consistent guys in Hip-Hop over the last 5 years; everything this guy does is well above average, and I feel like he’s going to keep making noise for the Canadian scene. If you haven’t, I highly suggest you go out and cop Handshakes & Middlefingers… yesterday.

A Day in Rock History: April 13th, 2010

Posted in Off Topic, Random with tags , , , , on Friday, January 13, 2012 by Eric Gilardi

On this day in rock n’ roll MGMT released their second studio album Congratulations. This was the much-anticipated follow-up album to their debut album Oracular Spectacular. Up to this point MGMT had ridden a tidal wave of success from their first album that was filled with more club and electronic vibes than an actual rock n’ roll sound. It was no surprise to me the negative reception that their second album received after the release on April 13th, 2010.

Personally, I thought their second album was better than the first. It is more true to their sound and who they want to be as artists. To the naysayers that only gave the album a listen once or twice I suggest you put the album back on and give it another listen. This time listen to it like you have never heard the album Oracular Spectacular but rather listen to it from a stand point of a music fan. Now, what do you hear? You hear an album that takes you on a trek back to the rock of the 60’s or 70’s. This is what the American rock duo of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser wanted to do. They do not sell themselves short and do what the masses want but rather what they want. I would hope that you do not sell yourselves short by not giving this album another listen. Sometimes when you do not get what you expect you are getting a present.

On a furthernote, you should probably pull both albums back out of the archives and reconnect with them because they are currently in the process of making their 3rd studio album. This album will be a self-titled album, and its supposed to drop in 2012 at some point. Now, if you are expecting them to go back to the sound of Oracular Spectacular, I would say think again. If the way their sound changed from their first to their second album is any sign of where the duo plans to go then get ready for another pleasant surprise. Another present from MGMT is in the works, Congratulations!

Video: Gangrene (Alchemist & Oh No), “Vodka & Ayahuasca Will Blow Your Mind”

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Thursday, January 12, 2012 by Tim Althaus

Alan the Chemist and Oh No have teamed up to release a sophomore LP to follow up their 2010 debut Gutter Water. From the sounds of “Vodka & Ayahuasca Will Blow Your Mind”, things really haven’t changed a whole lot since Gutter Water; this album is going to be based around super dope beats and grimey ass lyrics. The video doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, but in the grand scheme of things, it really doesn’t matter. You can jump over to Amazon to pre-order Vodka & Ayahuasca here.

Big Gigantic Does it BIG with NOCTURNAL

Posted in Album Download, Audio, Media with tags , , , on Thursday, January 12, 2012 by Eric Gilardi

The duo from Boulder, CO really has out done themselves with their new album NOCTURNAL; not only is it free but it’s also phenomenal. This is one of those albums that can literally melt your face while you are melting away into your couch. If you haven’t heard of this electronic duo I suggest you go to their website, and take full advantage of the free download.

Once you start listening be fully aware that you will need about 53 minutes of your day to complete the voyage into a futuristic space that is NOCTURNAL by Big Gigantic. The track “Beginning Of the End” blends melodic horns with an electro-funk sound in such a way that this is far from the Beginning Of the End for these two but rather the progression into the bright future.

After you download this album feel free to download the rest of their discography from their site. Now that they have hooked you up, return the favor and hook them up by attending one of their shows. If you like the music, you will love what you will see while in attendance. Trust your ears now and your eyes later.
