December Playlist

Posted in Downloads with tags , on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 by Erik Burg

Hey Everybody! Since I released my year end list in November, here is a nice treat for December. Just a few tracks that are nice for this time of year, or are fresh new songs I can’t get enough of. If you give the whole playlist a listen to you’ll find an eclectic mix of tracks (see Cat Power and Justice, ha) but it all makes for a very satisfying half hour or so. It’s hard to pick one stand-out from the the seven songs to suggest, so just listen to them all and enjoy music at its very finest (that means you Tim! lol). ~~ENJOY~~

mp3s:

The Very Best- Dinosaur on the Ark

Team B- On My Mind

Panda Bear- Good Girl/Carrots

Coldplay- Lost+ (Feat. Jay-Z)

Cat Power- The Greatest

Jens Lekman- Pocketful of Money

Justice- Final

bonoU2 may not exactly be my favorite peace-making Rock & Roll band of all time, but they do have some songs I have to admit that I enjoy. Same goes for Radiohead. I’m one of the few remaining people out there that just can not seem to get into Thom Yorke and crew, not that I dislike them, It’s just that I don’t find them to be anything special.

However, the combination of the two, as it turns out, makes for a nice little surprise. Here’s a track a ran across this morning, Radiohead doing a live cover of my favorite U2 song. Enjoy everybody!

mp3: Radiohead- Sunday Bloody Sunday (U2 Cover)

Bonus (laughs included for free) for all you funny guys out there, here’s a another cover of that great song done by one of the funniest men alive- Richard Cheese.

Love Has Come Around

Special Disco Version, otherwise known as James Murphy and Pat Mahoney, have been quite busy as of late. Delivering all night parties in their hometowns of New York and oversees in Europe; What can only be described as a DFA showcase in London a week ago, featuring the likes of James, Pat, The Juan Maclean, Gavin Rossum, Yacht, Morgan Geist, Still Going, and Mock & Toof delivering an all night attack that could cure even the most deadly cases of disco fever. Earlier this year though, May 20th, James and Pat took to the decks once again for Beats in Space radio, hosted by co-DFA founder Tim Sweeney, delivering an amazing and expansive set that travels over two hours time. A must have for any connoisseur of music, Special Disco Version delivers exactly what is claims: PURE DISCO. What could be better you might ask? Well not much, aside from Daft Punk actually playing at your house. This great session can be had for free HERE, along with the entire Beats in Space catalogue (guests include James Murphy, Hercules and Love Affair, Shit Robot, The Juan, Joakim, Altz).

In other DFA related news, James Murphy is apparently spear-heading a classic rock band called Hockey Night that is slatted to release an album within in the coming year. More news to follow on that front as it filters out.

Like many basketball players before me, I also enjoy THIS

Fans of The Cool Kids and Obama will appreciate this new remix LP of the Bake Sale entitled the “Bank Sale.” This entire album was done by Logarythmik and is quite impressive. I’m in class so I don’t have time to elaborate more, but check this out cause it’s definitely worth the listen. Any donations to this guy and his efforts in putting out this album go directly to the Obama campaign fund.

The Jacob Bannon-curated hardcore label Deathwish Inc. has just released their fall digital sampler as a FREE download at their site. Bannon knows what he’s doing, and Deathwish is one of the only remaining labels in hardcore that has been able to still consiste – this is worth your time to give this one a listen!  Artists featured on this mix include Blacklisted, Rise and Fall, Cold World, Narrows, 108, The Carrier, Carpathian, Victims, Killing The Dream, Trap Them, Reign Supreme, Bitter End, Shipwreck a.d., Pulling Teeth and non-deathwish bands United Nations (featuring Converge, Glassjaw, and Thursday members), Lewd Acts, End of A Year, Rot in Hell, and New Lows. There’s even some classic Hope Conspiracy and Supermachiner cuts on here (..in anticipation of their forthcoming release..)! When you’ve got the zip downloaded, don’t forget to check out the always spectacular Jake Bannon cover artwork.

Black Milk: Elec (Mixtape)

Posted in Downloads, Music News with tags , on Thursday, October 9, 2008 by Tim Althaus

Detroit up and coming super producer and emcee Black Milk released a free mixtape called Elec today. This mixtape is a composition of all of his work from his first LP Popular Demand up until this point in time. His follow up to the critically acclaimed (and one of my personal favorite albums) Popular Demand will be the album Tronic which will be released on October 28th on Fat Beats records. He released the first single off the album “Give The Drummer Some” as well as the completely scorching track “The Matrix“. Black Milk first came on the scene in the group B.R. Gunna. He also started doing production for Slum Village after Jay Dee left the group. In my opinion this is the guy to watch for. Black Milk’s name will be a household name after Tronic comes out. The way I see it, after this album, there’s a really good chance you will be saying Black Milk’s name with Dilla, Premier, Pete Rock & the rest of the legends that you associate with great beat making (not to mention he is an incredible emcee). PLEASE do yourself a favor if you love good Hip-Hop and buy this album on the 28th, it’s going to be something special.
