The site/label that’s brought you great tracks from Matt & Kim to The Cool Kids is back once again to release the first Holy Ghost! track in two years. Green Label Sound, the indie-hipster side of Mountain Dew (I thought they only liked gamers) is ready and willing to give away the spooky disco single “I Will Come Back”. Brooklyn duo Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel have been hard on the remix trail since their inception, but it’s their solo work that impresses me more often than their edits. And “I Will Come Back” is no exception, following in the disco footsteps, or dance pattern if you will, of “Hold On”, it features vocals that are reverbed and echoed to create a track that feels hollow, yet a drum kick that’s funky and fresh rounds the song into an extremely fun and danceable treat. And what else can you expect from DFA DJs, I mean come on. So turn it on and turn it up, for a free download it doesn’t get much better than this. Enjoy!

New Holy Ghost! via Green Label Sound

Posted in Audio, Interviews, Mind Inversion Exclusive with tags cage & aviary, DFA, Disco, DJ, download, exclusive, house, interview, mp3, television train, tiny sticks on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 by Erik BurgPart man, part machine, part cockatiel, Cage & Aviary take flights of fancy whenever they can.
Cage & Aviary, one part Jamie Paton and one part Nigel of Bermondsey, are busy people. They run a record label, they DJ, they produce, they jam. Their most recent release, the stellar Television Train/Suburban 12″ out now on DFA records (the euro version), has catapulted their success to a global scale. The two came stateside to play some of their first ever American DJ gigs in Los Angeles. So as their legend grows, and as their music continues to amaze, be sure to check them out. The two were nice enough to sit down and fill out a nice e-mail correspondence for Mind Inversion as well. Enjoy! (Nigel isn’t much for the talk)
Mind Inversion: So I’m barely 19 and have a limited knowledge, yet great appreciation and love of disco and house records from days gone by. I feel like all of your tracks draw upon very historic music, and music that most mainstream listeners don’t have an ear for. Elaborate on this idea, What from the past has influenced your music?
Jamie: I guess the short answer is lots of things, but that’s not much in the way of elaboration! We both bring lots of different influences to the mix, but our tastes also blend in some areas too – we both love the whole post-punk NY art-pop stuff like Talking Heads, and the Mancunian 80s new wave punk-funkers like A Certain Ratio and early New Order. We also have much love for the whole island records thing. A lot of this stuff when listened to now doesn’t sound mainstream but at the time, when the charts were made up of less formulaic production-line music, these oddball records made it into the upper reaches of the charts, I think it was an amazing time for popular music. Aside from all of that, I guess I bring more of a disco and house thing to the mix.
Nigel: I agree
MI: What is your model for creating music? I know you guys are involved in various other projects, so is the way you guys create started separately and then fused together at a different time, or is it more of the just sit down together with a plan and create tracks?
Jamie: We just sit down and jam really, see what comes out and take it from there. Recently we’ve been getting our live DJ set thing together, and the practice sessions for that have really produced some great new material, or at least starting points for them.
Nigel: I concur
Saturday Single: Walter Jones – “I’ll Keep On Loving You”
Posted in Audio, Music News, Music Reviews, Saturday Single with tags Deep House, DFA, Disco, house, i'll keep on loving you, mp3, preview, Saturday Single, Walter Jones on Saturday, May 30, 2009 by Erik BurgSo for the past couple of months the team here at Mind Inversion have been brainstorming over different weekly columns that each of us will run. Ryan’s got his awesome ‘Sunday Metal Minute’ and Tim’s got his fantastic ‘Wildstyle Wednesday’. I’ve been hard-pressed to come up with anything decent for mine, so I had put it off for a while. But it dawned upon me tonight while I was listening to the new DFA single from Walter Jones that a weekly write up about the world of House and Electro music would be a great thing. I’ll dig into my back catalogue when I get a chance, but each week I’ll try and offer up some of the best new singles, remixes, and b-side releases. So here we go, week one… Thanks for reading this far, enjoy!
Walter Jones – “I’ll Keep On Love You”
DFA Records Supersoul Recordings BUY: iTunes/Vinyl
The newest edition to the DFA family, Walter Jones is a man of simplicity. In a world that’s been dominated by glitchy, chopped up electro music, house music has seen a strong revival within certain crowds. Artists and DJs like Walter Jones would be the reason for this strong movement, combining echoing feminine vocals reminiscent of recent Au Reviore Simone and Hercules & Love Affair releases along with poignant and perfect loops. The amazing bass kick in “I’ll Keep on Loving You” times out perfectly, not too fast, but not near deathly slow. Jones is able to reach a happy medium on all fronts of his music. It’s great for House enthusiasts who are particular about every little nuance on a track, but it’s able to satisfy the more relaxed listener who enjoys some vocal overlay instead of straight repetition. It’s a blend of genres that I have a fondness for, so it’s a great place to start ‘Saturday Single’. Those who know me well know that I’m a total DFA fanboy, but that aside, “I’ll Keep On Loving You” is a single slightly different from many of their larger full length releases, proving once again why Murphy, Goldsworthy, Sweeney and co. have some of the best ears for electro music of any styling. B-side “Living With Out Your Love” shouldn’t be forgotten about however. Again featuring the vocals that haunt even the biggest Silent Hill fans, this track feels exactly like what it is, a B-side. It’s unpolished, unfinished, and sadly forgotten. It’s house’s version of indie lo-fi, giving an old vinyl-like sound to a new mp3.
There you have it, the first in what will hopefully be many successful ‘Saturday Single’ columns. If you like what you read, please come back. If you don’t like electro music of any sorts, too bad I suppose, I’d say you’re missing out. At any rate though, thanks for sticking around!
Hercules & Love Affair debut new material via mix cd
Posted in Audio, Music News with tags Andy Butler, Disco, DJ, Hercules and Love Affair, mixtape, New Release, Renaissance on Thursday, May 28, 2009 by Erik BurgThe art of the mixtape is far from dead. Whether you’re talking the thousands of hip-hop and rap artists trying to get their name out there or hype an album through this medium, or you’re chatting about the newest Fabric Live or Kitsune tapes, mix cds are not as dead as their 90’s origins. Come July 13 in fact, you’ll be able to get your hands on some awesome new Hercules and Love Affair material thanks to mastermind and coordinator Andrew Butler’s new mixtape.
Set to be released on Dance happy label Renaissance, the album will feature Andy Butler doing what he does best: DJing for two hours. Rats off to anybody who recognizes more than about five tracks on it, seeing as Butler has a taste for the obscure, bottom-of-the-crate house music. But I’ve got full faith in the man, after seeing him spin live and after hearing him on various podcasts, I know that the Hercules front man can deliver some of the best in the last few decade’s dance music.
Andrew Butler will be the test case for this mix series as well, entitled Sidetracked. Though it’s a concept that various labels and outlets have been exploring lately, Sidetracked looks to be another promising medium for artists to show that they’re into music other than their own. So be sure to check out the album when it hits shelves July 13.

A once in a lifetime news years party…
Posted in Music News with tags dance, Disco, Electronica, fun, Hercules and Love Affair, new years, party on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 by Erik Burg…Well, if you’re into dancing your ass off and retro-disco music that is. New comers to Minneapolis, but far from new comers to the dance floors, Hercules and Love Affair will be headlining a spectacular new years eve blowout party at The Loft in downtown Minneapolis. The show also features sets from hip-hop DJ Klever and Le Castle Vania, who’s described as “stroboscopic sleaze-pop that sparkles and shines like Champagne at an orgy” by URB. Along with those three spectacular guests is So Gold who will be performing live, and who’s material I’ve just recently gotten into thanks to The Stay Spun. It’s all hosted my the Moon Goons so it’s sure to have a Minneapolis groove to it all.
It’s hard to praise Hercules and Love Affair anymore than I already have, but it’s true, Andrew Butler is an absolute mastermind on the tables, just go listen to his various Beats In Space sets to see what I mean. And like I said, this is certainly a once in a lifetime chance to see Hercules shake their groove thang. The group never toured anywhere near here in support of their self-titled album (which took years to produce so don’t expect anything new for a while) so I wouldn’t expect to see Butler back here anytime time soon, if ever again.
So yeah, get your ass on the floor at The Loft on new years, enough said bitches. hope to see you there!!!
Love Has Come Around
Posted in Downloads with tags DFA, Disco, James Murphy, Pat Mahoney on Friday, October 31, 2008 by Erik BurgSpecial Disco Version, otherwise known as James Murphy and Pat Mahoney, have been quite busy as of late. Delivering all night parties in their hometowns of New York and oversees in Europe; What can only be described as a DFA showcase in London a week ago, featuring the likes of James, Pat, The Juan Maclean, Gavin Rossum, Yacht, Morgan Geist, Still Going, and Mock & Toof delivering an all night attack that could cure even the most deadly cases of disco fever. Earlier this year though, May 20th, James and Pat took to the decks once again for Beats in Space radio, hosted by co-DFA founder Tim Sweeney, delivering an amazing and expansive set that travels over two hours time. A must have for any connoisseur of music, Special Disco Version delivers exactly what is claims: PURE DISCO. What could be better you might ask? Well not much, aside from Daft Punk actually playing at your house. This great session can be had for free HERE, along with the entire Beats in Space catalogue (guests include James Murphy, Hercules and Love Affair, Shit Robot, The Juan, Joakim, Altz).
In other DFA related news, James Murphy is apparently spear-heading a classic rock band called Hockey Night that is slatted to release an album within in the coming year. More news to follow on that front as it filters out.
Like many basketball players before me, I also enjoy THIS
