Vivian Girls supporting 7-inch with “Moped Girls” video

You know, I don’t know why I’m on such a music video kick this week, but maybe it’s just that there’s where more music videos coming out this summer that are worthy of my attention than usual. While I’m reminsicing of my time spent in front of the TV as a youth, absorbing any and all videos coming for late night MTV2, I won’t slow down; Vivian Girls have posted a video for the new track “Moped Girls” from their new 7 inch on Rough Trade (the same cats who are also peddling the new “Get Over It” 7-inch from our local favorites in Solid Gold) which is limited to 1000 copies; grab it now while they’re still cheap. Additionally, the vinyl will contain a b-side track called “Death”, and you can pick this up over at Rough Trade’s website.

Destroy Destroy Destroy’s “The Wretched Forest” music video is intense

Nashville’s Destroy Destroy Destroy just premiered their new video for “The Wretched Forest” from their second album, the brilliantly named Battle Sluts, and I have just one word: INTENSE!!

Honestly, I have no idea how to categorize this band beyond ‘metal’ and that brings a huge smile to my face. In any case, I believe I have finally found my fun high-speed driving record for the summer!

Dan Auerbach has no reason to be “Heartbroken, In Disrepair”

With “Heartbroken, In Disrepair”, Dan Auerbach‘s got the grooviest tune I’m hearing so far this year on 89.3 The Current; it’s got a great combination of the soulful bluesy reverb-heavy guitar work that we heard all over Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’s Grammy-winning Raising Sand and some magical classic American sounding textures that I don’t think the guy has ever even touched with his main band (The Black Keys) yet. Based on what friends who saw him at First Avenue earlier in the year informed me, the live setting is the place to hear what he can really do with pipes and picking fingers, so I’m very intrigued to hear him play someday. However, I understand there are a lot of people that seem to love this guy already at this young point in his career, so I’m still not sure why he’s still so down in the dumps.. Either way, I dig what his achey heart makes..

Havoc of Mobb Deep Talks J Dilla

As many of you know J Dilla’s new album, Jay $tay Paid comes out this Tuesday on Nature Sounds Records. Havoc of Mobb Deep is one of the cats that is rapping over Dilla’s treats on the record. Havoc shows a great deal of respect for Dilla talking about how good he was at flipping samples, “It’s not what you sample, it’s how you sample it”. Havoc also talks about the first time that he heard Dilla (on a Tribe project), the fact that he would put Dilla in his top 10, how he chose the beat he rapped over on Jay $tay Paid & working with Raekwon.

Jake One Takes You To His “Home”

This is the newest single off of Jake One’s Rhymesayers Entertainment masterpiece White Van Music. The track features Vitamin D, C Note, Ish & Maneak B. This track paints a pretty vivid picture of Jake’s hometown of Seattle. You also get a cameo from Sir Mix a Lot in the beginning that is one that you won’t forget (where has he been for like 15 years?).

Peanut Butter Wolf Talks Evolution of Stones Throw With Splash Magazine

This is a great interview if you are a big Stones Throw fan (like I am). Peanut Butter Wolf talks about his label Stones Throw and the evolution it has taken. He also talks about issues like Madlib touring, what it was like to do a show with Ed Banger in Europe, what kind of vinyl he usually digs for, and art work. It tends to get a little boring, but if you are interested in the label as much as I am, you find the stuff really interesting.

Anti-Flag premieres “When The Lights Go Out” music video, the fire still burns

What the fuck is up with all these punk bands from the 90s rearing their heads this year to show that they’re still on the ball?? Propagandhi started 2009 off with the fantastically abrasive new album that is Supporting Caste (ps. they’re also playing at the Triple Rock in two weeks), Green Day is proving that they’re never going to go away with 21st Century Breakdown, Rancid is ready to deal out their first LP in 6 years on June 2nd, and Anti Flag continues the trend with their newest The People or the Gun on June 9th. It’s like these bands looked at all they happened since they slowed down and realized that it was finally time to use their elder knowledge and teach some people some lessons about how to play punk rock ‘n’ roll.

Really, though, I shouldn’t even be including Anti-Flag in this group; they’ve consistently been pumping out albums roughly every two years for more than a decade, and haven’t noticeably slowed down, to say the least. Last year when I saw their set at the Ripple Effect during the RNC (alongside such other diverse acts as Michael Franti, Dead Prez, .. and RATM..), it was obvious that they still have just as much passion for their cause as ever. As such, this video for “When the Lights Go Out” is a beautiful representation of them at this point in their career; never forget, Anti-Flag’s passionate fire for justice and prevailing against what holds you down is forever burning strong.

Brother Ali music video for “Good Lord” premieres; interviewed on KarmaloopTV

Awhile back I posted a video of a promo for Brother Ali’s video for “Good Lord”. Well as you can see above the video is finally here, and it’s awesome. The video was shot at the Malcom X & Betty Shabazz Center, and was produced by Rik Cordero. This is a great video for an even better song. If you haven’t gotten The Truth is Here EP I have little to no faith in you.

Also, KarmaLoop had a chance to catch up with Brother Ali in Boston at one of his shows. Brother Ali talks about the people that listen to his music and how they probably grew up different than he did. He also talks about the song “Forest Whitiker” and the fact that he is really glad to be in the skin that he’s in. Brother Ali bring a great introspect into music because he’s lived on both sides of the street (ghetto and suburb) and he’s one of the most humble people you’ll ever meet. It’s great to hear an emcee like Brother Ali talking about how happy he is to be where he’s at.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs premiere “Heads Will Roll” music video

It’s the year where the Yeah Yeah Yeahs make their inevitable blitz for the immortality in the rock ‘n’ roll history books, and the trio will be here in Minneapolis to play a highly anticipated, promptly-sold-out show at First Avenue. However, before this mini-US tour kicks off and they grace us with their live presence, they’ve decided to tease us all a bit and show us what to expect (minus a live werewolf, hopefully). By now, this irresistible song should be etched in your brain, but this Richard Ayoade directed visual accompaniment definitely launches the track to an even more unforgettable level of theatrics.

Watch the video above for “Heads Will Roll” from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs new album It Blitz!, and try to hold tight til they hit the stage on Saturday…

From The Rail: Soundset ’09 Part 2 (Videos)

crowd1A weekend that’s already been heralded by me once, Soundset 2009 brought some of the best hip-hop talent in the nation together in one spot, in our own quaint little Minnesota non-the-less. Yesterday I brought you some amazing pictures I caught from my usual front row spot, and today I’m back to give you some videos from the festival (Part 1 if you missed it). The audio on them isn’t amazing simply due to the sheer volume of the stage, but bear with and enjoy!

I had been waiting years to see El-P, and when he took the stage with DJ Mr. Dibbs Sunday at Canterbury I knew that something amazing was about to happen. Opening with “Tasmanian Pain Coaster” was stunning, but when El-P played “Up All Night” and Dibbs cut on the tables for a good six minutes during it my jaw nearly hit the floor. Check out the couple verses El get through and then watch the madness ensue as Dibbs proves once again why he is one of the best DJs out there. Feast on this sampling!

As I mentioned in Part 1 of my column, P.O.S. has been making tons of headlines for Rhymesayers this year, dropping the spectacular Never Better this winter and tearing it up on tour with Atmosphere all year. When the man of many instruments took the stage Sunday afternoon he unleashed a furry within the crowd that had been unmatched to that point. The high point of his set came when he brought both Dessa and Cecil Otter on stage to perform “Low Light Low Life” off of the aforementioned Never Better. It’s my personal favorite off of the album, and was everything I expected it to be live. There are some great shots of the crowd going crazy during the video as well, so hit play and watch one of the better tracks all day at the main stage of Soundset.

Naysayers aside, I thought that seeing MF Doom play was the highlight of the festival. It’s such a rarity these days, and the elaborate and sometimes comical nature of it all made his appearance and performance well worth the entire ticket price. After the real Villain finally took to the mic I got video of nearly every one of his tracks, seeing as I never wanted to forget what the masked man brought to the un-expecting crowd. The reception of Doom was terrible, and I’m slightly bitter at the crowd for that, but whatever, his new tracks were awesome live. Check out both “Ballskin” and “Gazzillion Ear” below. You’ll notice a slightly different view on the second video, as it was at that time that I jumped the fence and ended up going backstage to later meet Metal Fingers. At any rate though, Enjoy!
