Paid Dues 2009

paid-dues-logo1

It’s almost spring time and that means that Paid Dues is right around the corner. If you are lucky enough to be out in San Bernadino you will be able to catch one sick ass show. Rhymesayers vets Atomsphere will be headlining the bill, and will be featured by an array of RSE artists (Brother Ali, Eyedea & Abilities). To be honest the two acts I would be looking forward to the most are Cage as well as Blu & Exile. Both of the aforementioned artists are coming off of near classic albums and I would love to see what kind of life they can breathe into a live show. Who knows Exile might just rock out on the MPC during their show. Just like Soundset, this festival sounds very promising.

Editors Note: I had to edit this post because the supergroup Slaughterhouse (Royce Da 5’9″, Crooked I, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz) has been added to the bill.

Evidence moves the packed crowd in '08

Evidence moves the packed crowd in '08

The biggest and baddest outdoor hip-hop festival is back for another year in 2009. Anybody who attended last years events knows that it was absolutely banging and that the acts there were second to none. A few adjustments have been made to this years festivities, most notably the fact that instead of holding everything at the Metrodome the party will be brought to Canterbury Downs in Shakopee, MN. The date remains the same, memorial day May 24th starting at 11 am.                                                                                                                              Aesop Rock with “None Shall Pass” at Soundset ’08

No official artists have been announced yet for ’09, but their myspace (check it HERE) says that information will be released as soon as possible. So keep an eye out guys, because if the line-up is anywhere near last years this event will be one you won’t want to miss.

There will be a post up as soon as possible when artists and other acts are announced, so STAY TUNED!

MPLS show: Solid Gold, Military Special @ Uptown Bar

Posted in Concert Dates on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 by Ryan Buege

l_2389e0161fb441f4abfd15a582a3158eWednesday is a good night for cheap entry fees and cheap drinks. Come over to the Uptown Bar tonight to check out a nigth of the best electro-rock that Minneapolis has to offer; local up-and-coming crowd-pleasers Solid Gold will be headlining the event (with live and dj sets), and Military Special will provide support. The music starts at 9:30!

Solid Gold is coming off a recent packed house show at the Turf Club that had the entire audience moving, and they’ve got a higher profile gig scheduled next week opening for Tape ‘N’ Tapes in the First Ave. mainroom, so this is so good chance to catch them amped up and playing their spacy psychedelic electro pop-rock in their natural setting. For now, check out their bliss at their MySpace and watch Above the Fold‘s video recording of their breakout, “Get Over It”, at the Turf Club on January 16th.

I HIGHLY recommend click on the button in the lower right hand corner for High Quality!

10KLF adds Dave Matthews Band, Widespread Panic, and Wilco to lineup

10KLF, July 22-25, 2009It’s not just for the hippies anymore! Minnesota premiere annual summer celebration of festival music has announced it’s return for 2009, and in the tradition of other “jam-festivals” like Bonaroo, their adding a bit more diversity to their lineup. In addition to yearly staples such as Trampled By Turtles, Umphrey’s McGee, and Wookiefoot, this years’ 10KLF will feature performances by big-name artists DMB, Widespread Panic, and alt-country heros Wilco. Even Minneapolis-based Cloud Cult will be performing. My personal favorite of the list is Mississippi river folk-punk William Elliot Whitmore. Who are you excited to see? The party’s worth it every year, and this year it seems like the organizers have finally put together a promising enough itinerary to ensure it’ll be packed. Keep reading for the full list.. MPLS free show: Høst (and others) @ the Hexagon Bar

Posted in Concert Dates with tags , , , , , on Friday, January 9, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Høst @ Hexagon BarFREE! Any smart Minneapolis music fan should do themselves a huge favor and check out this free showcase this week from some of the areas best metal bands. For those not aware, Høst has been recently been afforded the honor of receiving Decibel Magazine‘s 25th Best Extreme Metal Album of 2008 (placing them somewhere between internationally beloved bands such as Testament and Opeth). It’s quite an honor for a small band from the Minnesota scene that has barely had the chance to play 20 shows locally. Not to mention, their s/t album was my favorite regional metal release of the year. Høst is an innovative journey that takes both black metal and experimental rock through new ideas; a blizzard of an album that will please fans of all types of progressive and extreme music. Opening support is provided by Minneapolis grind’n’rollers Ambassador Gun, St. Paul deathgrinders Said the Shotgun to The Head, gritty Eau Claire metalheads Desolate Void, and Minneapolis metalgazers Vernal Pool. See you there!

New Flight of the Conchords- Season 2 premiere!

Posted in Concert Dates, Video with tags , , , , , on Thursday, December 18, 2008 by Erik Burg

flight_of_the_conchords1The music market might be slumping, seeing as it is the middle of the winter and nobody dares to release anything important this time of year, but the t.v. gods delivered a nice little gift today. The Flight of the Conchords, New Zealand’s fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo, have released the Season 2 premiere via Funny or Die. The half an hour long episode feels much like anything you watched last season, which means tones of laughs and, of course, plenty of music. (oh yeah, and the funniest shirts/sweaters you’ll ever see courtesy of Brett). I won’t give away anything, just watch the episode for yourself! Sadly no news yet on when the next episode of Albi the Racist Dragon will appear.

Raekwon gives details about Only Built For Cuban Linx 2, Wu Tour Dates

Posted in Concert Dates, Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , on Monday, December 15, 2008 by Tim Althaus

the-chef

It seems as though the Chef is cooking up some classic material once again. Raekwon talked to Pitchfork about his new masterpiece, the sequel to arguably one of the greatest solo Wu albums of all time, Only Built for Cuban Linx 2. According to Raekwon, “This record is the shit, it’s been getting around in my camp. It’s another masterpiece that is ready to be released.” The Chef also said that he strayed away from all RZA production because as an artist he felt as though he wanted to move on to other things. He noted that he has some of the best producers in the game for the last 20 years on this shit. Who would he be speaking of? Dr. Dre, Marley Marl, J Dilla, Pete Rock and DJ Scratch (holy shit, what a producer list) will be heading the production side of the album and guest appearances will include Ghostface, Method Man, GZA, Busta Rhymes & Inspectah Deck.

If you go over to the original article Rae talks about how he wanted the new OBFCL  to compliment the original one coming out. he wanted to “be like seeing DeNiro do a mafia flick, do something completely different and then come back to another mafia film and be the same dude he was in The Godfather.” That’s almost exactly the way that Raekwon’s career has gone, he released two other albums since the original OBFCL and this is like him going back to the stove and cooking up classics.

It sounds like this album is already going to be one of the biggest albums to come out next year. All of you Wu heads out there get ready because this album is going to be exactly what you’ve been waiting for. Based on the last OBFCL I can assure you that chances are, you are going to be seeing plenty of Ghost on this album to.
