Erik’s Top Ten Albums of All-Time

Pretty obvious, I think you know what you’re getting yourself into here. We here at Mind Inversion want you the reader to better know where all of us writers are coming from, as far as what’s changed our lives musically. So we’ll be running a special once a week for the next month, accompanied by Sound Immersion #2, that will be spotlighting our favorite music. I have the fine pleasure of starting this all off, which is pretty exciting. I’ve always thought about albums as “my favorite” much like I’m sure any person has, but actually having to compile a definitive top ten list seemed daunting. But alas, after many cuts, I finalized a list that I’m extremely happy about.

#1. LCD SOUNDSYSTEM – Lcd Soundsystem.Where would I be today without this album? Well for starters, not on this blog, not listening to music, and quite possibly actually finding lil wayne to be an enjoyable artist. This one album single handedly changed my life… Continue reading

Sunday Metalhead Minute: Tombs, “The Divide”

Posted in Sunday Metalhead Minute with tags , , , on Sunday, March 1, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Tombs is a snarling Brooklyn-based doom and hardcore act that has had my attention tighter than anyone in underground metal this year. Ever since I got my hands around their previous vinyl releases (S/T and the split with Planks), Winter Hours has been on my shortlist for anticipated releases. Given the relatively limited scope of emotions governing the doom metal spectrum, there’s a very authentic, undeniably inventive perspective and overwhelming presence that Tombs brings to the game. While I was skeptical at first of whether they had simply hit a streak of early luck on the first two releases, Winter Hours (which finally hit stores last Tuesday) is a brilliant album that should ensure they’ll continue to turn a lot of heads this year. All the gears are extremely well-oiled on this one, and this song from the middle of the tracklist is a great example of the beefed up, free-minded blackened doom’n’psychedelics they’re practicing on Winter Hours. I hope to have a full review on this one pending some free time from my school/real work life…

The time has finally come for us at Mind Inversion to come together to release our very first of what promises to be a very long line of monthly playlists to rock your body and soothe your weary eardrums. After some friendly prodding from our trusted pals over at PerfSpot (wink), each of our current contributors crept out from the shadows to put in their two cents about what they’re listening to this month. As any consistent reader of our site might hope, this sampler presents you with the kind of unbelievable variety that I don’t think you can find anywhere else. When listening, keep this in mind.

It is also important to remember that most of the people contributing to this list have been stranded in the subzero temperatures of Minnesota for more than a few weeks. Clearly, there is an heavy air of reflection throughout this simultaneously uplifting and introspective wintery mix. Meanwhile, a couple of our contributors are transplanted out West right now, displaced from their familiar Midwestern surroundings; Eddie for school, and Dan on an extended journey of self discovery. Dan’s camera captured the magnificent image you see as the album cover above during his ongoing trip through California and Oregon.
