3 New Rjd2 Tracks For Your Dead Ringer Loving Soul

Posted in Downloads, News with tags , , on Sunday, February 22, 2009 by Tim Althaus

ramble-john-krohn I can tell you that nothing in the enitre world made me happier than reading this news article last night. Ramble John Krohn (Rjd2 for short) is almost done with his fourth studio album, and he has three tracks that have been leaked. RJ released Third Hand a couple years back and a lot of fans were wondering why RJ took a sudden direction turn away from Hip-Hop. Even though RJ strayed away from Hip-Hop I can say that I never lost faith in this man. I will never forget Dead Ringer and hearing the track “Ghostwriter” for the first time in my best friend’s car (thanks Abe). Dead Ringer changed the way that I felt about production in Hip-Hop music, and for that I will always show RJ love. There is a good chance that he will forever be in my top 5 for production skills.

I remember that Pitchfork wrote an article about RJ “ditching” Hip-Hop, and I personally couldn’t believe it. How could a man with so much talent in one area (MHz, Soul Position) depart from the one genre that gave him his name? I later heard an Rjd2 produced Little Brother track called “Best Kept Secret” and my heart was filled with joy. It was then I knew that Pitchfork had been totally wrong and I could continue on with my life.

Flash forward to yesterday. I hear that Rjd2 has three new tracks out and I have no idea what to think. Is he going to go back to his roots? Is he going to stay indie rock? Let me tell you that this was one of the best surprises I have had yet this year (granted we are only two months in). These tracks sound like some absolute gems from the Dead Ringer days with RJ back at the top of his game. If you personally were a fan of Dead Ringer or Since We Last Spoke, you couldn’t be happier with these tracks. Make sure you give these tracks a good listen because there is plenty more great material to come. Be sure that you also know I am waiting for this record like Christmas, and you should be to if you are an Rjd2 fan.

Here is the second part of the “Good Lord” promo. The first part is an intro with Brother Ali and Rik Cordero, and then Ali goes into an acapella of a new track. It sounds like The Truth is Here is going to be more classic material from Brother Ali. Make sure you go grab that shit when it comes out next month. Stay tuned to Mind Inversion for the review.

Brother Ali “Speaks the Truth” to Hip Hop DX

Posted in Music News with tags , , , , on Saturday, February 21, 2009 by Tim Althaus

brother-ali-2Ever since Brother Ali dropped his 2007 effort (not to mention modern day classic), The Undisputed Truth he has been one busy ass dude. He’s been touring all the time, and now he is getting ready to drop an EP next month entitled The Truth is Here. Recently the fine folks over at Hip Hop DX sat down with the man himself for an interview, and to be quite frank it’s one of the best in depth and personal interviews I’ve read in a long time. There are a lot of issues that I never knew about that he discusses in this interview.

The interview starts out with Ali’s views on his fellow peer and mentor KRS-One’s feelings about Barack Obama. He also sounds off on how Verizon wouldn’t let him tour with Gym Class Heroes because of his “Uncle Sam Goddamn” video. I also had no idea that the Department of Homeland Security froze the Rhymesayers bank account when Ali was overseas in Australia. Apparently when the DHS froze the bank account, Ali and his crew had to register their social security numbers, addresses and even tell them why they were there. It’s funny that Ali really isn’t that political of a rapper, but even he agrees that he has been getting the Chuck D Treatment. You can also read about how the plans are progressing for Ali’s new album (sounds ridiculous) that drops next year.

All in all this is a great interview. This article skews a lot of different aspects in Brother Ali’s life and it is very in depth. Make sure you go out and get The Truth is Here next month when it drops, it promises to be some incredible material.

Jam Session for Ma Dukes

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Friday, February 20, 2009 by Tim Althaus

This video was shot back in January when Suite for Ma Dukes was being prepared. This Sunday February 22nd, the Suite for Ma Dukes will be going down with a 36 piece orchestra in LA. If I was in the area there is absolutely no way that I would miss this show, it’s going to be an amazing representation of a legend’s music. In the video you can here these guys putting together a “from scratch” version of Slum Village “Fall in Love“. It sounds like this album is going to have a very nostalgic feel to it, and I can wait to hear it. You can download the EP on iTunes here. Make sure you grab the album and keep listening to Dilla, because February is Dilla month. TURN IT UP!

Mixtape Download: Blu, HerFavoriteColo(u)r.

blu1Blu is one of those cats that you just can’t wait to hear more material from because you know it’s going to be top quality. Saturday he released his new mixtape HerFavoriteColo(u)r. It’s 14 tracks of straight fire just like any Blu release is going to be. He had been leaking tracks on his MySpace lately and my guess would be this is what it was leading up to. The thing that is different about this mixtape is that all of these tracks are produced by Blu himself. Everytime we have heard material from Blu in the past it’s been produced by someone else, and usually someone incredible at that.

Blu is a guy that never ceases to amaze me. He’s put out two near classic albums (Below the Heavens & Johnson&Jonson) and he just keeps feeding the fire with great material for all of us to hear. With the consistency that Blu has been having, it’s not going to be long before his name is at the top of everyone’s list.

Video: Asher Roth & Nottz in the Studio

I posted about these guys earlier (seperate posts though) and now I’m posting a video of Nottz & Asher Roth in the studio. From the way things sound from the video Nottz & Asher are going to be putting out some classic material. They mention making nine tracks in 24 hours, and at the end all Nottz can say is “You’ll see…You’ll see”. I look forward to being able to listen to the material that these guys are talking about because it sounds like it’s going to be nuts.

Video: 11 Year Old Producer VohnBeatz

Stumbling across this video was mad nuts. I was over at Crate Kings today and I saw the caption of 11 year old producer, and I thought it had to be bullshit. Turns out this kid VohnBeatz is the real deal (you can click his name to listen to some beats on his MySpace). His influences range from his father (S1), J Dilla (notice the fly ass Stussy shirt), Hi-Tek & Just Blaze. For the skill that this kid has at 11 years old, he could definitely be the future of production in Hip-Hop.

Video: Asher Roth, “I Love College”

I have been hearing quite a buzz about Asher Roth lately. I have to admit this video is downright hilarious. The song makes me laugh my ass off because there isn’t a better depiction of what it’s like to party in college. I am going to have to check out more by this guy so I can get a feel for his music. He sounds like a guy that could make a lot of waves in the music industry. We are talking about a kid that sat in front of Jay-Z and supposedly rapped 150 bars and got “Ok…Ok…You’re Nice” out of Big Hov. I’m telling you, watch out for Asher Roth.

Video: Nottz working on Detox in Dre’s Studio

This is only a 35 second video clip of Nottz (Nottz Raw) working on Dre’s new and highly anticipate album, Detox. From what I can hear in the background on this clip, this album sounds like it is going to be fucking killer. People have been waiting for this album for just about 10 years and now that we are seeing things falling into place it’s very exciting. I haven’t exactly heard when Dre is planning on dropping this gem, but I know I will be bumping this one for awhile.

Video: Royce Da 5’9″, “Part of Me” (Official Video)

Posted in Video with tags , , , , on Monday, February 16, 2009 by Tim Althaus

I’ve been waiting for this one for awhile. Here is the premier video for Royce Da 5’9″s single “Part of Me”, which is one Royce’s new album Street Hop due out April 21st. I can’t tell you how much I am anticipating to hear this new album of his, and this video is a great preface to it. Royce is one of those cats that has an unbelievable ability of story telling. The concept for this video is amazing and shouldn’t be missed. Make sure you go out and get Street Hop on April 21st, could be a major contender for album of the year.
