Music Discovery: Moses Melkonian, “Like Gods (Live)”

With being new to this whole blog atmosphere I was wondering who this person was that was liking some of my posts. When I looked into it I discovered an independent artist who is looking for his break in the music industry. My adventure over to mosesjunkyard was followed by the viewing of a very real person with a real passion for his music. Moses Melkonian’s video for “Like Gods (Live)”  captures this passion that he has. It is a raw version of the track but it gives it a somber sound that reminds me of the likes of; the “Ladder Song” by Bright Eyes and “Mad World” by Gary Jules. I know this discovery of Moses Melkonian will be a positive one in my life, and for this I thank him.

Freddie Gibbs & Ski Beatz to Release Collaborative LP?

Posted in Media, Music News with tags , , , on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 by Tim Althaus

Cheese and rice; Gangsta Gibbs is all over the place these days. He dropped a critically acclaimed mixtape last year, came out with a  collaborative effort with Statik Selektah, and he recently dropped his material with Madlib; now it sounds like he’s going to be dropping a collaborative LP with legendary producer Ski Beatz. Some of you may remember the single that Ski Beatz dropped with Gibbs already off of 24 Hour Karate School, Pt. 2 titled “Illegal”; if that single is any indication of what’s to come… the Hip-Hop world is going to be in for one hell of a surprise.

Pretty Damn…

Video: Madlib & Freddie Gibbs, “Thuggin”

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 by Tim Althaus

It’s about time Gangsta Gibbs & Madlib dropped some visuals from their collaborative EP; they released a teaser last week, but I’m usually not too big on posting those. I woke up this morning to a Facebook wall post from one of my musical comrades, and needless to say I was very surprised that it was the video for “Thuggin”. This is one of the most gutter tracks I’ve heard in a long time. Madlib’s beat full of sequential strings is relatively simple, but it gives Freddie Gibbs the perfect canvas to spray blood, sweat and tears on. I can not wait to hear more material from these two; it’s blatantly obvious that they are a deadly duo.

Miike Snow: A Taste from Happy to You

Miike Snow, the pop trio from Sweden, have been working on their follow-up album to their unbelievable self-titled album from 2009. The first album is still one that I listen to today. It helped me through a break-up with an ex-girlfriend, it even helped me through a second break-up with that same ex-girlfriend. I am curious to see if they can come up with lyrics with as much meaning on their second album Happy to You. This album is expected to come out in March of this year and if it is as good as the last I may have to see if it can help me get a new girlfriend. Follow this link to thetiimes.com to get a taste of the album.

Music Discovery: Scarlet Monk AnnaBella

If the cover art on Scarlet Monk’s debut album AnnaBella doesn’t seductively make you take your clothes off her voice will definitely make you strip down and make your own cover art. Her elegant sultry voice is blended with such laid back and subtle beats that it will make you feel like you are in a martini lounge sipping on a dirty one. AnnaBella is an album that will keep you wondering what she has in store for you next. In the track “Flutter” ADaD adds a smooth flow to give the album a true hip-hip element. If you like downtempo music I suggest you head over to the Global Vortex site, give her album a listen and you just might discover what you have been missing.

It is highly recommended that you listen to this album with someone you are passionate with or want to be passionate with.

To All of You Lucky Enough To Be Attending Coachella…

You better not miss the Flying Lotus show. It turns out, he will be debuting his new album for the fans during his live set at Coachella. I am truly envious of anyone that gets to experience this opportunity. Cosmogramma was one of my favorite records of 2010, and I can assure you that FlyLo’s new album is going to be spectacular; everything that this guy puts out seems to be synonymous for incredible. If you were lucky enough to get tickets, you really shouldn’t pass up an opportunity for a first listen to one of the best albums of 2012.

M.i, “Crawl Back” (From The Coldplay Sessions)

Austin, Texas native M.i dropped some new heat from his upcoming mixtape The Coldplay Sessions which is slated to drop on February 7th of next month. The Coldplay Sessions will be a follow-up to his last two mixtapes The Jack Johnson Sessions and Prep Time, both of which are fantastic releases; in fact, Prep Time was on of my top five favorite mixtapes last year. “Crawl Back” gives the listeners everything that they’ve become accustomed to hearing when listening to M.i: beautiful soul sample based beats and M.i’s signature laid back flow. The thing that impresses me most is that M.i does all of his own production, mixing and arranging on The Coldplay Sessions. The tape will contain fourteen brand new tracks that contain sample flips from Coldplay songs, and M.i will be putting his own spin on each cut.

Download: M.i, “Crawl Back”

Many of you may recall that M.i won a contest put on by the people of HipHopDX and Crooks & Castles to be featured on an exclusive  beat created by the Grammy Award winning production collective The J.U.S.T.I.C.E League. His entry, “Maybe I” was a certified heat rock, and it can be viewed below.

Erik Arbores: 14-year-old Dutch Phenom

Posted in Music News, News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on Monday, January 16, 2012 by Eric Gilardi

While tuning into ElectricArea, on Sirius XM, on my ride home last night I heard an EDM track that made me take the radio volume up a couple of notches. The song titled “Bliss” was by a Dutch DJ named Erik Arbores. Once the track was over I was in pure astonishment. Erik Arbores was only 14 years old.

After checking out his write-up over at Armada Music I became even more impressed. Not only is this kid a musical savant he is also an educational giant. Erik started crafting his musical talent, at the age of 4, when he started to learn how to play the piano. At the age of 11, he took his piano skills and combined them with electronic music that he mixed on the computer program Fruity Loops. This is where he started to get his love for creating EDM tracks. His big break happened when he showed one of his tracks to Armin van Buuren on the Dutch TV show “De Wereld Draait Door.” Soon after that, at the age of 14, he decided to sign to van Buuren’s label Armada Music where he released his very impressive “Take It” E.P. Oh yeah, he started to take courses at the University of Delft in that same year too.

Get the complete story over at Armada Music and check out a young phenom that is breaking into the EDM industry.
