So, maybe everyone on the planet has heard Maya’s “Paper Planes” in one form or another; either in its original smash hit form or one of the millions of remixes that sampled the song over the course of the last year. The song was so well played that it even inspired the mock Grammy category “Best Use of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes””in the most recent issue of Wired (issue 17.02, p. 48). However, courtesy of ComaR and MN’s own Above the Fold, we are proud to present an awesome mashup of Radiohead’s ‘No Surprises’ and M.I.A’s ‘Paper Planes’. Whether you wanted to hear this song again or not, I strongly suggest you follow the link and listen in.. this late into the game, and it might be one of the better one’s to be released yet.

Meshuggah plan to release live concert DVD; BUT they’ll be in MN next week

Posted in Concert Dates with tags , , on Thursday, February 5, 2009 by Ryan Buege

In an interview with the Hornet this week, Meshuggah drummer and group leader Tomas Haake revealed that the band was finishing putting together a live DVD for possible release later this Spring. While that’s all fine and dandy, the main thing I want to emphasize with this post is that Meshuggah is playing what promises to be an unbelievable show with other progressive death metal elite Cynic and The Faceless only a few days from now in St. Paul at Station 4. Really, when they’re playing LIVE down the street in two weeks, why should I even concern my self with this lesser DVD business right now?.. Come one, come all! Get out to the fucking show:

Feb. 13 – MESHUGGAH, CYNIC, THE FACELESS live @ Station 4 – St. Paul, MN

Spinal Tap plan first album in 20 years

Posted in Music News with tags , , , , , on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Who the fuck saw this coming? Not me, but then again, AC/DC and Metallica had some of the best selling tours in the world last year, and old school metal vibes are back in a big way in recent years in the underground. Plus, the awesome Anvil documentary that came out last year proved that there still are many good stories to tell about aging rockers like this. I hope Rob Reiner can get the old crew together and go the extra mile so we can see a part 2 of this Rockumentary, 25 year later.

For now, please watch this hilarious video of the reunited Tap playing their progressive metal classic “Stonehenge” live at Live Earth in 2007. :)

Some of you may have missed it yesterday, but while I was at work I was listening to my man Stef give an excellent live studio performance of some songs from “Never Better” on 89.3.  He and the incredibly likable Mark Wheat had a hilarious conversation, and luckily it’s already available for listening online! Well worth your time – listen below!

Don’t forget, P.O.S. released his latest album Never Better yesterday! Go pick it up and pass it around!

Album Review: Wolves in the Throne Room, Malevolent Grain

Posted in Music Reviews with tags , , , , , , , on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Besides hearing a song or two on a mix from a friend in the past, I’m really not familiar with much from Wolves in the Throne Room’s previous output and didn’t really know what to expect when I was introduced to this album this week. However, with that said, after hearing this two-song EP a couple of times, I think I’m going to have to go check out their earlier releases.  Malevolent Grain is the Olympia, Washington-based “ambient black metal” band’s second EP, a prelude to their third long-player Black Cascade which is due later this year.

Right off the bat, I want to acknowledge how much I reallllly love the sound on this album. One reason I’ve never gotten into black metal so much in the past was because the production always (for better or worse) sounded so thin and gritty that the musical appeal was totally lost on me. In the last few years, many black metal bands have overcome this trait and have released albums that are much more heavily layered than the cheap recordings of the early years, and I think the current activity in the USBM scene is evidence of this. Wolves in the Throne Room this approach of density and orchestration to another level entirely, Malevolent Grain has a sound that is as thick as ever with ferocity that is unmatched to boot. In fact, in many ways this album reminded me as much as (or possibly even more than) my favorite orchestral post-rock innovators like GY!BE  as it did of the scathing black metal of Mayhem, Gorgoroth, or Burzum.  To be fair though, many of these bands are now dead or dying. Wolves in the Throne Room are now in a league of their own, following their own vision and innovating on the headbanging classics of these greats with some unparalleled epic blackened rockers of their own.

The album is divided in half, with the first song “A Looming Resonance” beginning the vinyl with a natural, folksy, brooding ambience. Eventually the orchestral buildup is aided by vocals from Jamie Meyers, and as her strong vocals resonate with a Celtic tinge, the song segues into a more viscious psychedelic black metal groove. The entire mix feels more removed from black metal than I could have imagined.  By the end of the song, the increasingly intricate dynamics and dense layering have taken this epic a soul-stirring peak that could replicated by few bands in the world (honestly, only GY!BE comes to mind..). “Hate Crystal” begins in much more tradtional black metal fashion with a blasting rhythm section, sinster riff, and wraith-like vox. As majestic as it is brutal, “Hate Crystal” was the perfect cap to my introduction to this band and faded this sinister EP out brilliantly.

(thanks to Bryan for borrowing the album!)

Exclusive Video Bootleg: Cavalera Conspiracy live at Eurockeennes 2008 in France pro-shot footage surfaces online

Just this week a beautifully shot, professionally edited video of Cavalera Conspiracy‘s crowd-pleasing performance on July 5, 2008 at Eurockeenes in Belfort, France surfaced online via an unnamed source. Today, we are proud to provide you all with an exclusive premiere of this awesome playlist of songs, both old and new, as it first appeared on French public television this summer. The setlist is jam-packed with some of the best songs from Sepultura’s back catalog, with nearly every album from Max and Iggor’s career together receiving some kind of attention. These songs are executed with a ferocity and precision that is definitely unmatched since 1996 – maybe I’m wrong, but I’ve never seen the Derrick Green-fronted Sepultura ever crank out an “Arise/DEC” medley that could match this. However, it seems that Max and Iggor sound even best together on the stuff they have recently written, such as with “Must Kill” near the end of the set. If you missed seeing them live together this summer, enjoy; this is Sepultura!

Audio: Smashing Pumpkins release free mp3 for “FOL”

Posted in Downloads with tags , , on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 by Ryan Buege

As you may have heard, Smashing Pumpkins premiered a new song called “FOL” this past Sunday during a Hyundai commercial which aired during a certain well-publicized sporting event that day. Now, courtesy of Hyundai, you can download the song for free (with an email address) from their website. Forget that the song aired for the first time during the Super Bowl pregame show, Corgan seems to have plenty of detractors these days anyway – but to my ears he’s still got that magic 20 years on, and I thinnnnk that’s all that matters. I’m sure we’ll (hopefully) soon be hearing about more Pumpkins music to be released in the near future, but for now click below to get the latest.

Video: Joseph Duplaniter of Gojira interviewed by HBB Norway

Gojira interview with Headbanger's Ball

If my memory serves me correctly, Gojira is definitely the most versatile and praiseworthy death metal band to make a name for themselves in the last decade. Ever since the release of The Link, their star has noticeably been steadily rising, and with the release of last fall’s The Way of All Flesh the band has secured the most captive audience of their career. In this interview with MTV Norway’s Headbangers Ball, Joseph Duplantier gives us the details about the message he wanted to portray on the last album, why Gojira albums aren’t necessarily concept albums, and their new found (and well-deserved) fame. (ed note: Joe D. is obviously very satisfied with how The Way of All Flesh came out and how it was received. I had the opportunity to interview him at Cavalera Conspiracy’s debut gig in AZ last year, and Joe’s noticeably more eager and excited in this interview than he was then – and that is saying A LOT considering he was about to go on stage with the Cavalera brothers in their first gig in 10 years!)

Video: Tombs, “Gossamer” music video premieres

Tombs, Gossamer
My most anticipated underground metal album of the year, Winterhours by Tombs, actually has a music video for a song called “Gossamer”! Not much to say; it’s a pretty standard band performance directed by Kevin Custer, shot in low lighting, and emphasizing the dynamism and subtleties behind Tombs epic post-doom song structures. Relapse must be doing a pretty proactive job pulling the strings for these guys ’cause it even premiered at P4K of all places; Winterhours will be available on Feb. 17, 2009. Check it out!

Video: Minnesota-based local music internet TV show Northern Outpost airs third episode featuring The Yoleus

Recently the Minnesota music community gained a valuable addition when the Uptown Minneapolis-based internet TV show Northern Outpost launched at vimeo.com/northernoutpost. It’s a much needed visual outlet for local music artists that showcases the musicians with studio performances and interviews filmed at their coopted Owl Recording studio which air bi-weekly at Northern Outposts’ website. They’ve already gone through two episodes (that we unfortunately failed to mention here), and now they’re on to the third where they are featuring St. Paul avante-garde/mathrock group The Yoleus. In addition to a live performance of The Yoleus’s driving, bass-heavy rhythms and dissonant guitar theatrics at Owl Recording, the band gives a brief interview where they discuss topics ranging from the current local music scene to the nature of guitar-based instrumental music. It’s a really great show, and it looks like they’ll have an entire season of excellent local artists to come.

Stay tuned for more episodes; they’ve got 4 and 5 filmed already!  And don’t hesitate to click the links below to visit all of their previous episodes.

Episode 2: Kill to Kill (01/16/2009)
