Jam Session for Ma Dukes

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Friday, February 20, 2009 by Tim Althaus

This video was shot back in January when Suite for Ma Dukes was being prepared. This Sunday February 22nd, the Suite for Ma Dukes will be going down with a 36 piece orchestra in LA. If I was in the area there is absolutely no way that I would miss this show, it’s going to be an amazing representation of a legend’s music. In the video you can here these guys putting together a “from scratch” version of Slum Village “Fall in Love“. It sounds like this album is going to have a very nostalgic feel to it, and I can wait to hear it. You can download the EP on iTunes here. Make sure you grab the album and keep listening to Dilla, because February is Dilla month. TURN IT UP!

Brutal Truth debut “Evolution Through Revolution” from first full length in a decade

Posted in Audio with tags , , , , , , on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Brutal Truth, the reunited, extremely influential NYC grindcore band featuring Dan Lilker (Anthrax, Nuclear Assault, S.O.D.), has updated the world on their whereabouts  and posted the first taste of music from their new full-length album Evolution Through Revolution, their first album in over 10 years! Brutal FUCKING Truth is right! The title track they posted at their MySpace is some whoooaa-sooo heavy brutal deathgrind that is aided by their matured outlook and the production updates of the new millenium. Holy headbanger, these riffs are sweet! Anyone who’s remotely into metal or punk should tune in for a lesson on where grindcore is about to evolve to when Brutal  Truth releases this album on April 14th. This is an album to look out for!

New Audio: Friendly Fires, “Skeleton Boy” (Air France Remix)

So this was pretty much amazing news for today. Two of my favorite new bands that I discovered in 2008 getting together for the forthcoming Skeleton Boy 12″ due out March 3rd here in the US. Friendly Fires have been hot on the remix trail, with their Aeroplane remix for Skeleton Boy also getting tons of play lately. Which is a great thing, hopefully it’s turning people onto their amazing self-titled debut and the group gains more and more momentum heading into their sophomore release. Lending a hand to “Skeleton Boy” this time is Air France, the outstanding and dreamy Swedish pop duo. Their 2008 release, No Way Down, took a long time to hit the states, but when it finally did it was extremely well received. Filled with massive landscapes and sprawling synths, the vocally sampled album is still on repeat on my iPod.

Don't worry, these boys don't burn

Don't worry, these boys don't burn

The result of this two greats is well… great, of course. Air France completely takes the song over and makes it totally its own. Added are the airy spaces that Air France is so fine at crafting, taken away are the Cut Copy like 80’s new wave bass lines. So yeah, it’s a really fun track, and definitely a great takeover for Air France, holding me over ever slightly until their next album. Enjoy!

New Audio: Swan Lake, “A Hand at Dusk”

Okay so here is the deal, I’m in class right now so I haven’t listened to this yet. BUT, I’m sure it’s amazing, seeing as Swan Lake’s debut album Beast Moans was great and Spencer Krug’s track-record is nearly spotless. March 23rd is the release date for their next album, Enemy Mine. So yeah, check out the track below and enjoy!

Mixtape Download: Blu, HerFavoriteColo(u)r.

blu1Blu is one of those cats that you just can’t wait to hear more material from because you know it’s going to be top quality. Saturday he released his new mixtape HerFavoriteColo(u)r. It’s 14 tracks of straight fire just like any Blu release is going to be. He had been leaking tracks on his MySpace lately and my guess would be this is what it was leading up to. The thing that is different about this mixtape is that all of these tracks are produced by Blu himself. Everytime we have heard material from Blu in the past it’s been produced by someone else, and usually someone incredible at that.

Blu is a guy that never ceases to amaze me. He’s put out two near classic albums (Below the Heavens & Johnson&Jonson) and he just keeps feeding the fire with great material for all of us to hear. With the consistency that Blu has been having, it’s not going to be long before his name is at the top of everyone’s list.

Video: Asher Roth & Nottz in the Studio

Posted in News, Video with tags , , on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Vodpod videos no longer available.

I posted about these guys earlier (seperate posts though) and now I’m posting a video of Nottz & Asher Roth in the studio. From the way things sound from the video Nottz & Asher are going to be putting out some classic material. They mention making nine tracks in 24 hours, and at the end all Nottz can say is “You’ll see…You’ll see”. I look forward to being able to listen to the material that these guys are talking about because it sounds like it’s going to be nuts.

Video: 11 Year Old Producer VohnBeatz

Stumbling across this video was mad nuts. I was over at Crate Kings today and I saw the caption of 11 year old producer, and I thought it had to be bullshit. Turns out this kid VohnBeatz is the real deal (you can click his name to listen to some beats on his MySpace). His influences range from his father (S1), J Dilla (notice the fly ass Stussy shirt), Hi-Tek & Just Blaze. For the skill that this kid has at 11 years old, he could definitely be the future of production in Hip-Hop.

A/V: Solid Golid’s “Bible Thumper” music video; “Who You Gonna Run To? (MGATP Remix)”

Sound Verité has been hitting it out of the park this week with some great finds from one of our beloved show-stopping favorites, the local Minneapolis electro-rockers in Solid Gold. There’s no sense talking too much about this; you know what to do!

Metal & Hardcore video roundup; Mastodon, DEP, Lamb of God and more

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , , , on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 by Ryan Buege

It’s been a busy week between my first week of tests and a crazy amount of good live shows coming to the city, but I dug back a couple of days and found all the newest metal and hardcore video you should hear about. Turn up and tune in!

Dillinger Escape Plan, live from NJ basement

Dillinger Escape Plan play “briefly announced”/secret New Jersey basement show in area smaller than their tour bus. Rolling Stone actually covered it and posted great review of the ceiling breaking, 40 drinking, bone breaking, super intimate show from this band that built its fame off the intensity of these very same DIY type of shows in the late 90s. Watch this video as they barrel through “The Mullet Burden”, “Panasonic Youth”, and “43% Burnt” before the power goes out. They have a DVD coming out soon entitled We’re Not Trying to Impress You that will feature live footage from all of their phases as a band..

Mastodon, in studio recording Crack the Skye

Mastodon is soon to release their new album Crack the Skye, and its that time where they start treating us to treats such as games and previews and such to whet our appetite. In keeping with this tradition, they have released their very first in studio video, and from the sounds of Brett Hinds (who is definitely not normally this sober) they band is more focused than ever. If this really is “their” Led Zeppelin IV, we’re all about to have our minds blown..

Lamb of God, “Set to Fail” music video

We reviewed Lamb of God’s forthcoming album last week and were pretty impressed; this week they released their first music video from Wrath, and it happens to be from one of their best, most catchy songs off of the album, “Set to Fail”

Also:

Psyopus premiered “The Burning Halo” music video from their new album Odd Senses, in stores today!

MetalKult did a fantastic interview with Scott “Wino” Weinrich.

Video: Asher Roth, “I Love College”

Posted in Video with tags , , on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Vodpod videos no longer available.

I have been hearing quite a buzz about Asher Roth lately. I have to admit this video is downright hilarious. The song makes me laugh my ass off because there isn’t a better depiction of what it’s like to party in college. I am going to have to check out more by this guy so I can get a feel for his music. He sounds like a guy that could make a lot of waves in the music industry. We are talking about a kid that sat in front of Jay-Z and supposedly rapped 150 bars and got “Ok…Ok…You’re Nice” out of Big Hov. I’m telling you, watch out for Asher Roth.
