Common’s new album Universal Mind Control was released today. This is an in depth interview that Common did for MySpace Music. In the interview he skews a few topics such as his growth through albums and some of his Hip-Hop quotables. Sounds like this album could be a huge treat and I can assure you I will have a review up after I get a good listen. Also look below to see Common’s opinion on Universal Mind Control (his review). Com is setting some pretty high standards for himself based on his review. Continue reading

Find DMX & you could get $5000!

Posted in Music News with tags , , , on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 by Tim Althaus

dmx084mugshot1Well it seems as though DMX just can’t get out of the doghouse (no pun intended). It seems as though Earl “DMX” Simmons is wanted by the police yet again. The Arizona police (YES THE ENTIRE STATE) are offering a five thousand dollar reward leading up the capture of Dark Man X.  The reason that they are taking this so seriously is because this is his second time that he has failed to appear for court. The Arizona judge set “This guy is a major annoyance to the criminal justice system…” “But we will track him down, and he will face a different kind of music in the court of law”. Simmons faces charges of drug possession, identity theft and animal cruelty.

This guy used to be at the absolute top of the game? What the fuck happened? DMX actually used to make really good music and be at the forefront of Rap culture. I guess you can’t teach an old dog new tricks…

Well it seems as though DMX is still in the doghouse (no pun intended). It seems as though Rap’s favorite

Sonic Youth, John Paul Jones, and Takehisa Kosugi collaborate for dancing

Posted in Music News with tags , , , , , on Thursday, December 4, 2008 by Ryan Buege

A meeting of the minds if there ever was one: Sonic Youth (aka the best band ever) has confirmed an apperance in April 2009 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music that will feature none other than Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones! Merce Cunningham At 90 will be the international premiere of a new evening-long dance work and a musical team-up between Sonic Youth, John Paul Jones and Takehisa Kosugi. The group will be performing in a work composed by Kosugi for New York’s Merce Cunningham Dance Company. The event will honor the 90th birthday of the choreographer, Merce Cunningham, “whose radical approaches to space, time, and technology continue to redefine the way we experience dance,” according to Guardian.co.uk.

While I’m personally not big on interpretive dance and choreography and the like, Sonic Youth working with anyone is interesting news, especially when its the man who layed the rhythm down in some of the greatest rock ‘n roll songs of all time. And to me, this sounds like a far cooler post-Led Zeppelin experiment than the rumoured Robert Plant-less Zep tour that’s apparently in the works (as is Plant’s duet with Allison Krauss) . I know I won’t be able to attend, but hopefully a pro will be there to tape this experiment with the great Sonic Youth. Merce Cunningham At 90 takes place April 16-19 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, tickets start at $25.

Kreator posts new song from forthcoming album, Hordes of Chaos

Posted in Music News with tags on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 by Ryan Buege

The thrash masters in Kreator have been working on their new album for many months, and today they have posted the first music to be leaked from the release. The song is “Warcurse”, a massive beast of hate-fueled thrash that has the band sounding more pissed off and defiant than ever! By January 13th, U.S. headbangers should have their hands on a full album of deadly new German thrash when Hordes of Chaos hits shelves and download sites everywhere. Kreator will be on the road for a gigantic 4 month live stint (with other greats such as Exodus, Warbringer, and Eluveitie) soon, and so far it looks like the new album will definitely add to the insanity in the pits this time around. Click below to check out “Warcurse” and keep reading to see all the dates for Kreator‘s spring tour.

Video: Justice on KarmaloopTV

Vodpod videos no longer available.
Well here’s another video of Justice talking about their crazy ass DVD coming out entitled A Cross The Universe. It’s due out December 9th as a Live DVD/CD combo and promises to be a great release. According to these guys they filmed over 200 hours of footage and narrowed it down to just one hour for the DVD (for all of you doing rapid math that’s .5% of the footage). This shit looks like it’s going to be crazy, I know I’m going out to get it.

Folk&Stress: “Brothers Freestyle”

Posted in Music News with tags , , , , , , , on Thursday, November 27, 2008 by Tim Althaus

folkThis is the first post of many that I am going to be making about these guys. Folk&Stress are two cats (they are fucking brothers… how sick is that shit?) out of New York, and boy can they make some really fucking good Hip-Hop. It’s funny because I hadn’t heard anything about these guys at all until I watched the Vimby video at Southpaw for Black Milk’s release of Tronic. I immediately jumped over to their MySpace page and was completely blown away by the amount of punch that these two pack. I can tell you right now that their album The Box still has a “to be announced” date attached to it, but once that shit hits you are going to feel it for a long time.

Take a listen to this freestyle with the backdrop of Gang Starr’s Code of the Streets. I’m pretty sure this beat gets completely decimated by these guys, if you feel any different I think that you might be brain dead (either that or entirely too high). Keep on the watch for The Box it features guest appearances by GZA, Vast Aire, Aesop Rock, Blu, Bronze Nazareth & production by Wu affiliate Dreddy Kruger. I don’t know about you but by that guest list alone, this album sounds like it will be something that you are definitely going to want to have. Check out the track below and jump over to their MySpace.

Devastation is still a band, for now

Posted in Music News with tags , , , on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 by Ryan Buege

devastation-112208_small

Despite what recent Blabbermouth reports and the band’s website would lead you to believe, revitalized Texas thrashers Devastation are still touring together. In fact, they made a stop here in Maplewood at the Rock with Soulfly on Saturday, November 22nd, and they blasted out classics from their albums Violent Termination, Signs of Life, and Idolatry.

Apparently Richie Dunsmore and Alex Dominguez stranded the rest of the band without a van or trailer, but Henry Elizondo, Walter Trachsler, and and Fidel Tagle are continuing on as a trio until the tour is finished  –  Elizondo and Walter are trading off on vocals for the rest of the tour (with occasional help from Incite and inebriated members of Bleed The Sky). We’ll see if the three-piece lineup continues on for long, but I personally hope they do. Despite the fact that no one expected them to even play that night (and they were missing two key members), they immediately made the large venue feel small and alive with their lovable egos and mindbending shred of mid-80s thrash. The unsuspecting audience was headbanging and circle pitting from the word “GO”! I’ll cross my fingers to hopefully seeing them again in some incarnation..

Anyway, here’s a photo as proof of their existence!

Burnt by the Sun ascend from their own smoldering ashes; new demo posted!

Posted in Music News with tags on Saturday, November 22, 2008 by Ryan Buege

Can any of us really believe that it has already been 5 years since our friends in Burnt By The Sun presented us with some new music? If you’re not aware of the last several years of breakup rumors and lengthy member searches, forget about it; there’s no need to be sad, because as far as you’ll ever know, all is well in the realm of BBTS. The band is back, revitalized and more determined than ever; and they just posted a new demo called “F-UNIT” online from their forthcoming album Heart Of Darkness!

Although they has been pretty quiet for the half a decade, audibly the band really hasn’t lost any steam. In fact, it would even be hard to say that the rest of the metal scene has caught up with Burnt By The Sun at all during the last few years. I’m still spinning Soundtrack to the Personal Revolution  and The Perfect is the Enemy of the Good quite often, and in all honestly, they sound more progressive (and awesome!) than 90% of the metal that’s been released since they dropped their last album. Personally, I can’t wait for the new release any sooner. The new track reunites us with with the BBTS we all remember and love exactly where we left off – feeling scared for our lives.

Ghostface to release Ghost Deini the Great

Posted in Concert Dates, Music News with tags , , , , , , on Friday, November 21, 2008 by Tim Althaus

ghostdeinithegreatme9Well, in a seemingly endless year of great releases it looks as if there is going to be another great compilation album from a Staten Island legend before it’s all said and done. Tony Starks aka Ghostface Killah will be releasing his first official Def Jam collection entitled Ghost Deini the Great. This collection will feature appearances by Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne, Styles P, Ice Cube, Pusha T (Clipse), Raekwon & more. This album also (CD only) features live footage from Ghost’s trek on the Hip Hop Live! Tour, as well as rarities and remixes of some of your favorite Ghostface songs.

Ghost has had one hell of an illustrious solo career, he is highly regarded by many critics and this guy might be up there with the greatest emcees of all time. To me there really aren’t too many guys that can paint a picture like Ghost as well as be funny as hell at the same time. Go out and grab this shit because it promises to scorch the hell out of your speakers and break your neck.
