Buy Dark Was The Night, Save The World

Posted in Music News with tags , , , , , on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 by Erik Burg

So the day has come. The greatest compilation I’ve ever been a part of. And by “been a part of” I mean “relished over”. So yeah, Dark Was The Night releases today on 4Ad records, it comes on triple vinyl or double disc or even iTunes download, but MOST IMPORTANT is that fact that ALL PROCEEDS go to the Red Hot Organization to HELP FIGHT AND CURE AIDS. Why not do a great thing today, and enjoy some of the best new music out there. Please take my advice, if only for this once.

New Audio: The Decemberists, “The Hazards of Love”

Posted in Audio, Music News with tags , , , , , , on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 by Erik Burg

From their forthcoming release on Capitol Records, slated to be releases March 24th, The Decemberists have begun streaming the title track to The Hazards of Love. It’s a little slower than some of their other material, and especially more than the other single “Rake’s Song”. The track runs fairly long too, and can become a bit boring. At nearly seven and a half minutes, “The Hazards of Love” is a promising track for the album. Like I said, it’s not overwhelming or mesmerizing at all, but it’s really solid and grounded in being good at what it’s good at. (Kind of reminds me of what I think about the new Andrew Bird album). Anyway, check it out for sure and enjoy!

Puscifer plays live for the first time in Las Vegas

Posted in Music News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Puscifer, Live in Las Vegas 02/16/2009

Last night in Las Vegas, Maynard James Keenan’s Puscifer, the project he describes as his “creative subconscious”, made their live show debut at the Pearl Theatre in front of a crowd of 2,500. According to the SPIN review, the eccentric, electro-lounge industrial music of Maynard’s Puscifer was just a small part of a grand variety show that included a variety of over-the-top comedic visual accompaniments and a large list of guest musicians and performers such as Brian Posehn, Gil and Rani Sharone,  Milla Jovovich, and Tim Alexander. You can hit “read more” below for a full set list from the show

Keenan is an oddball, and the three show set at the Palms Springs Casino that he’s doing right now with Puscifer is the way for any fan to experience this extremely creative (and unwaveringly theatrical & provocative) artist in his rawest and truest form. No video of the concert has surfaced yet, but in the meantime I highly encourage you to watch this brand new video interview the Suicide Girls conducted with Maynard at his winery. Among other things, they delve into the purpose of the crazy Puscifer, the unwritten duties of creative individuals, and his personal love for “the art of” winemaking. As he emphasizes in the video, he’s not content merely being just some rockstar or another guy in the band. To his end, MJK will be a 21st century renaissance man.

Keep reading for the setlist!  Continue reading

R.I.P. Big L (May 30, 1974 – February 15, 1999)

Posted in News, Video with tags , on Monday, February 16, 2009 by Tim Althaus

big-l The month of February is a sorrowing time for the history of Hip-Hop. We lost James Yancey (Dilla) 3 years ago, and we also lost Big L (Lamont Coleman) 10 years ago yesterday. Many people to this day regard Big L as one of the greatest freestyle emcees of all time and many say that if he was still here would be a modern day legend. He was only able to officially release one album entitled Lifestylez ov Da Poor & Dangerous which had two hits that cracked the billboard top 25. He did have a second album titled The Big Picture which was released posthumasly in 2000 after he died, but many say that Lifestylez was his shining gem as an artist.

The thing that saddens me the most is that Big L was just weeks away from signing with the Roc-A-Fella camp when he died. I can’t even begin to fathom what could have happened if Big L was rhyming over Just Blaze & Kanye West beats, I don’t think that there would be a better emcee in the game right now that’s for sure. Big L had some of the nastiest punchlines and the best story telling that anyone had ever heard at the time. It’s truly a shame that the good die young. Big L was only twenty four years old, he had a long career ahead of him with many accolades he could have accomplished. I’m sure that Big L and Dilla are up in heaven making some of the dopest music anyone has ever heard.

Company Flow talks about the re-release of Funcrusher Plus

Posted in News, Video with tags , , , , , on Monday, February 16, 2009 by Tim Althaus

149142coflowMy heart jumped with great content today. I was browsing over at Pitchfork and apparently El-P, Big Jus & Mr. Len did an interview with the people at Pitchfork about the Funcrusher Plus 12th anniversary re-release. Apparently El-P is going to be releasing the album on his own label Def Jux. Might I also mention that El-P’s answers in this interview are downright hilarious, he’s chalked full of humor and it makes for a great read: Pitchfork: “Why reissue Funcrusher Plus now, 12 years after its original release?”, El-P: “I think I got my first hand job at 12.”

I personally can’t wait for this no brainer classic to be re-issued. Funcrusher Plus to me was so far ahead of its time. According to an article this re-release will feature some pre-1995 tracks that Company Flow did before Funcrusher as wel as tracks that were after the Funcrusher release. This album has been out of print for awhile now, so you know hardcore heads are going to be grabbing this album right when it comes out (hint: me). This last year also marked the reunion of Company Flow at a live concert. I wonder if we will get to hear any new creative genius anytime soon? (Lets all hope to god that we will)

Just a few things that have been said about Funcrusher Plus:

“One of the most influential rap groups of the late ’90s, Company Flow laid the groundwork for nearly all the experimental hip-hop that followed, and its advancement of hip-hop as an art form is still being felt.” ALL MUSIC

“Widely recognized as one of the genre’s greatest achievements.” PITCHFORK

“Company Flow became heroes to alternative rap fans when they released their Funcrusher album”. ROLLING STONE

You can read the interview with Pitchfork here. Make sure you go out and grab the re-issue of Funcrusher Plus when it comes out because it’s going to be a great addition to your collection, as well as a great album. But, don’t leave now; click read more and make the jump to watch Company Flow’s classic video for “8 Steps to Perfection” from the original release of Funcrusher PlusContinue reading

New Audio: High Places – “Anyango”

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , on Friday, February 13, 2009 by Erik Burg

A good start to a friday, if I’ve ever had one. A new High Places track from their upcoming album Thank You Very Quickly was released this morning, delighting listeners of their amazing afro-american infusion music. I’ve been digging tunes like this lately, whether it’s Very Best, El Guincho, or The Ruby Suns, I’ve been loving worldy influenced music. “Anyango” delivers a strong punch, and is a great start to their new album. Funky bass lines and amazing drumming heavily influenced by the African members of the group, “Anyango” is definietly worth checkign out if you haven’t heard anything by High Places yet. Enjoy and happy friday!

Ozzfest is officially over, but who really cares?

Ozzfest, Rest In Pain

As Blabbermouth reports today, Ozzy’s too busy with his shitty new reality show and half-assed music to put on another Ozzfest this year, but we don’t really need his shitty festival anyway!

Ozzfest has had its time in the sun, and after a year of hard economic times it’s not surprising that an expensive touring package of this kind would have a hard time succeeding unless it’s extremely well put together. Although I admittedly have not been to the show since 2001, I have heard many rumors that the recent experience was not nearly up to par with what I experienced and certainly not comparable to the shows’ glory days of the mid 90s.

For what my money’s worth, I would much rather go to a great destination festival of the traditional European variety. As MetalSucks reminds us, many new underground metal festivals of this kind have been popping up all over the United States during the last several years, and now many are getting quite reputtable lineups. Examples include New England’s Metal and Hardcore Festival, California Metalfest, Maryland Deathfest, Texas Metal Up Your Ass, LA Murderfest, Atlanta’s Scion Rock Fest, and even Milwaukee’s Robot Mosh Fest. With the high number of brilliant package tours being lined up as well, who really needs a bloated, commercialized Ozz-o-rama on wheels? Not me, and surely not most metalheads.

For those still craving the Ozzfest format, don’t worry! The Rockstar Energy sponsored Mayhem festival tour looks like its getting more success than ever. From the looks of their recent lineup additions for this summers tour, it will be worth every penny that you’ll pay, whether you agree with the shows corporate nature or not.

Video + New Audio: Simian Mobile Disco – “Synthesise”

Posted in Media, Music News, Video with tags , , , , , , on Thursday, February 12, 2009 by Erik Burg

Simian Mobile Disco have stayed fairly busy since their amazing 2007 release Attack Sustain Decay Release. Though the album didn’t gain as much support as it deserved (thank Justice and Daft Punk touring for that) the boys still released plenty of single around the album, touring heavily in support, and fixed up a Fabriclive mix as well. I haven’t heard much in the way of official plans for their next release, fingers crossed that it’s this year, but a new song they’ve been playing live got the video treatment. Though the video is nothing special, seeing as it’s just the video accompiament for when they play the track live, the song is something to stick around for. “Synthesise” is more beat driven and heavy than some of their prior songs that may have relied a bit more on vocal samples. At any rate though, it’s definitely worth a listen. Enjoy!

Stephen Malkmus Interview with Pitchfork

Posted in News with tags , , , on Thursday, February 12, 2009 by Tim Althaus

sm The genius behind the highly influential band Pavement Stephen Malkmus sat down with an interview with Pitchfork Media recently. I can’t tell you how much I absolutely love this man’s music. He is my favorite musician in the Rock world, and this guy is one of the most genius human beings I have ever had a pleasure of listening to. I constantly say that I don’t listen to rock music a great deal; I will always listen to Pavement. Pavement is long and gone though, and now Malkmus is with a new group called the Jicks. They put out and album last year entitled Real Emotional Trash. I thought the album was great and the dynamic is definitely there, not to mention Malkmus’ guitar is the best it’s ever been. Being a huge Pavement fan, I don’t know if anything he does can compare to the Slanted & Enchanted days. Pavement is a stamp in 90’s rock history. It’s shocking to think that 2009 celebrates the 20th anniversary of Pavement’s existence.

In the interview Malkmus did with Pitchfork and to be honest there is a lot of talk about Pavement in the interview. Many of the questions that are asked during the interview pertain to how he approaches music now, as compared to the Pavement days. This is a great fucking article and a lengthy read if you love Malkmus or Pavement. There’s a great deal about the album Brighten the Corners because it was Pavement’s fourth album, the Jicks’ new album was also their fourth. It’s great to hear Malkmus talking about Pavement again, and it’s great to hear some insight from one of the greatest voices of the present.
