Vast Aire Wages the “Battle of the Planets”

Vast Aire 073

If you haven’t been paying attention to the beef-radar lately, Vast Aire released a diss track towards Cage and the rest of Def Jux. All of this rivalry going on has to do with the unfortunate passing of Camu Tao. Cage outed Vast very harshly about how his relations really stood with Camu, and this track apparently was Vast’s response. It really saddens me to see all this bullshit beef going on in the Hip-Hop community, it’s really the last thing that we need right now.

On a related side note, I got an e-mail on my Blackberry last night about El-P’s newest blog post on MySpace. It is pretty much all about Vast and the whole Camu situation, and if you have a moment to spare I would highly recommend you check it out here.

Atmosphere / Brother Ali / Reef the Lost Cauze freestyle

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Sunday, August 9, 2009 by Nolan Levenson

So I had the pleasure of seeing Atmosphere oustide the TC at a show in Philadelphia in May on the “When God Give You Ugly Tour” with Brother Ali opening. At the end of the show they brought out Reef the Lost Cauze to freestyle over the “Smart Went Crazy” beat. Reef absolutely killed it and I’m happy I found this video, dropping tons of sweet Philly references (including Wawa!). Unfortunately the sound qualiy isn’t great, but it’s still enjoyable.

God I wish I was back in NY for this FREE show in Prospect Park. This video comes from 2dopeboyz. Big Daddy Kane did a show in Brooklyn last night. Here’s part of the set with Kane performing “Ain’t No Half Steppin'” off of his debut album of 1988 Long Live the Kane.

The Budden / Wu Beef continues

Posted in News, Video with tags , , on Sunday, August 9, 2009 by Nolan Levenson

I cannot believe we are still talking about this, but apparently some rappers’ egos are just to large. Just when we thought the Joe Budden / Wu Tang beef was subsiding, there was apparently a backstage altercation yesterday in Los Angeles. That’s just fanastic. I hate when professional musicians cannot act professional. This bout is childish to say the least. Rock the Bells is supposed to be an event where hip hop’s greats can come together to create a great day of music.

The video above is from Budden’s live stream after he was punched in the eye by someone in Ice Water, Raekwon’s posse. Afterwards, according to HipHopDX, police officials reportedly closed the backstage and the concert performances were cut short. Crooked I apparently went with his posse, Circle of Bosses, to find the assailants and had this to say, “Ain’t nobody gonna disrespect one of my dudes when we on the west coast.

I really wish that this sort of stuff didn’t happen. It doesn’t benefit anyone.

If you haven’t seen Supernaturl spit a freestyle, you’re missing out. He’s definitely one of the dopest and most entertaining people on stage. Here’s a clip I found on youtube, courtesy of iomosmarad of Supernat at Rock the Bells in NYC. Follow me after the jump for another RTB video from Common’s set doing Black Star’s “Respiration” with Talib Kweli.

Pharoahe Monch Tears Up The Jazz Cafe

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Thursday, August 6, 2009 by Tim Althaus

It’s always great to hear news about Monch. The guy is a complete monster, and he definitely restfully resides in my top 5 emcees of all time. This video comes to us via 2DopeBoyz, and it features some footage of Pharoahe tearing up the Jazz Cafe in London. It’s nice to see these guys starting things off with a little Black Milk, because God knows it never hurt anyone. In the performance Monch runs through “The Matrix”, “Let’s Go” & “I’m Free” (Baatin tribute). Does anyone know when WAR is supposed to drop?

Ghostface Speaks on The Pretty Toney Album

Vodpod videos no longer available.

We’ve already seen the Wallabee Champ talk about Supreme Clientele & Bulletproof Wallets, now this time he runs through The Pretty Toney Album. I don’t know about you guys, but when it comes to Ghostface, Pretty Toney is definitely up there when it comes to his catalog. Apparently during the recording of this album Mr. Fishscale himself quit smoking weed, because it got to be too much of a nuisance. Listen to one of Hip-Hop’s greats drop knowledge. Just like Shake said, if you don’t have these albums in your collection you are an epic fail.

Fashawn Resides in “Sunny California”

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Everything that Fashawn has been putting out lately is making me fiend for Boy Meets World very badly. This is the video for the single “Sunny California” which will most definitely be on Boy Meets World. All of the beats that I’ve heard from Exile on this album are top notch, and Fashawn’s hype has been hotter than the sun as of late. I can guarantee that these two are gonna hook up for one of the albums of the year. September can’t come soon enough.

Jake One Vs. Vitamin D, Red Bull Big Tune Seattle

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , on Thursday, August 6, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Recently Jake One & Vitamin D put on a beat battle in Seattle at the Red Bull Big Tune Beat Battle. Watch these guys do their thing as they have a little friendly competition on stage. If you don’t know who Jake One is, you must be sleeping underneath a rock. Vitamin D is another monster producer from Seattle doing his thing, definitely another cat that shouldn’t be slept on.
