The Philly Freezer is back with another masterful cut produced by the proidgal son Jake One. According to the 2DopeBoyz article I read this track, “Old To The New”, will be on Freeway’s upcoming mixtape The Beat Made Me Do It. Much like Freeway’s Rhymesayers release The Stimulus Package, The Beat Made Me Do It will feature Jake One on the production boards (my lord). Don’t be foolish people, get your click on.

Copywrite Talks About Camu Tao, MHz & Table Scraps Re-Issue

Posted in Music News with tags , , , , , on Thursday, July 30, 2009 by Tim Althaus

copywrite@westernfront9.12.08 092 Copywrite recently talked to HipHopDX about a few things that pertained to his dearly missed friend, Camu Tao. As many of you out there in the Hip-Hop community may know, the original MHz album Table Scraps has been re-released in both digital & retail. If you haven’t heard Table Scraps before, you are truly missing out on a piece of history. We are talking about an album that put Ohio’s Hip-Hop scene on the map for the first time, not to mention launched the careers of Rjd2, Copywrite & Camu Tao. The thing that is special about the re-release of Table Scraps is that portions of the proceeds will go directly to Camu’s family.

According to the HipHopDX article, Copy claims that many people didn’t even know that he and Camu were in a group. Copywrite feels as though Table Scraps is great music, and re-releasing it is a way to give back to Camu’s family. He also mentions that Table Scraps is exactly what it sounds like, a bunch of recordings laying around that they wanted to throw together for one cohesive effort to give people some insight. Copy also talks about not wanting to be a solo artist coming into the game, but things at Eastern Conference didn’t work out with MHz. In a baffling breath, Copy drops the bomb that DJ Mighty Mi didn’t even want to release Rjd2’s Dead Ringer (which is a catastrophic decision).

Copy met Camu in ninth grade and they soon found out that they had a lot of things in common as far as lifestyle. He notes that when Camu learned to make beats he elevated his game right away, “He was crazy with his style. He always wanted to do something different”. He remembers Camu as a good friend, and a cool, energetic dude. This is really a great article that has many eye opening facts. I highly suggest you read this, it’s an example of some great Hip-Hop journalism.

In addition to the information about MHz, Table Scraps & Camu Tao, Copywrite also talks about his upcoming album The Life & Times of Peter Nelson.

Wild Style Wednesday Review: Masta Ace, Disposable Arts

Posted in Music Reviews, Wildstyle Wednesdays with tags , , , , , , , , on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Disposable Arts I want to start this review off by saying that this review holds special because Ace is one of my favorite emcees of all-time. He’s been in the game for twenty plus years now, and his albums consistently get better and better. Ace’s flow is aged fine wine, and Disposable Arts is the testament of time. Even though this album wasn’t on my top 10 most influential albums (although A Long Hot Summer was), I can assure you it rests comfortably on my top 10 favorites of all-time. When listening to this album, you go on a journey with Ace to The Institute of Disposable Arts. The storytelling on this album is impeccable, and you feel almost like you are there every single step of the way. I still thank my friend Nick Heise to this day for referring me to Masta Ace, and this one goes out to him. Continue reading

Atmosphere Giving New York’s Webster Hall Its Dose of Ugly

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , , on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 by Tim Althaus

It’s always good to have a little bit of Sluggo in your day, don’t you think? Atmosphere is out on their “When God Gives You Ugly” tour tearing down venues across the nation. During their performance at Webster Hall, URB got the chance to shoot a decent amount of footage (not to mention the video footage is pretty damn good) of the concert. If you’ve ever been to an Atmosphere show, you know the shit’s dope and the crowd is always involved. In the video featured above you will get to see the track “Guarantees”, and you can follow me after the jump to catch Eyedea & Slug freestyling Orphanage style, as well as the track “Fuck You Lucy”. Just Blaze Talks Briefly About Jay Electronica

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Two Jay Electronica updates in the last two days? I feel like the lord is looking down on me with a big smile on his face. Just Blaze spoke a few choice words to iHipHop about Jay Electronica and what’s been going down as of late. It sounds like these guys have been putting down some serious shit as of late. Just Blaze talks about Exhibit A, as well as the video trailer that they just put out. I got really excited when Blaze said that he is going to dedicate time to get “the record” done as soon as possible. I keep saying this all the time, Jay Electronica’s full length is going to change the entire game. Just Blaze is arguably one of the best producers in the game, and you throw Jay’s revolutionary lyrics/flow over Blaze Beats… game over.

Blue Scholars sign to Duck Down records

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on Monday, July 27, 2009 by Nolan Levenson

Blue Scholars, my favorite group, has announced that they have signed to a joint venture to Duck Down Records. I’ve suspected this move for about a year now since I saw the Scholars talking to Duck Down CEO Dru Ha before their show in NY. The move will allow them to continue to control their own music via their label Massline while getting better distribution of their record. On August 25th, they will be releasing an EP called “OOF!”. On September 1st, their 2007 album Bayani will be re-released and will be called Bayani Redux. It will include one brand new track and 2 songs that were previously available only digitally.

Personally, I don’t really understand the move. Blue Scholars sound nothing like anything else on Duck Down, musically or lyrically. I think the distribution is great for them, but I am puzzled by the move by both parties. However, I do hope for their success with this decision.

More new music from the Scholars is also expected soon so sit tight!

The video above shows Sabzi on Seattle’s brand new Light Rail and at the end has someone asking him about signing to Duck Down.

You can download the track “Coo” off their new EP here or on their blog. I saw them perform it live at Soundset this year and its a sweet song.
