Substance makes “official” introduction with Manifest Station concert on March 27

Substance, the Minneapolis based progressive arts, activism, and action organization that brought us the unforgettable Ripple Effect concert outside the capital during the RNC, has announced plans for their first followup to the Ripple Effect. While it’s pretty much impossible for them to top the RE lineup (that featured such amazing appearances as Dead Prez, Michael Franti, Anti-Flag, and the infamous RATM acappella set that sparked a much larger march to the RNC gates), Substance has admittedly done an amazing job to put together a praiseworthy collection of performing artists for the Manifest Station event that will take place at First Avenue on March 27th. As they recently announced, the ever-gracious Sage Francis has signed on to headline this very reasonably priced event, and support is set to be provided by a variety of (mostly) local hip-hop heavyweights; so far the list includes the P.O.S. fronted modern hardcore punk band Building Better Bombs, B. Dolan, Cecil Otter of Doomtree, and the God Damn Doo Wop Band. Not to mention, if you arrive early enough you’ll be able to catch a Cecil Otter headlined local pre-show with The Battle Royale and El Guante,  and Big Cats at the 7th St. Entry! And the crazy Rage Against the Machine performance was never announced, so who knows if the Substance guys have anything else crazy up their sleeves for this event… you’ll just have to attend to find out. Visit ManifestStation.org for all the details!

Basic Info: Friday, March 27th, 2009 at First Avenue, Minneapolis; 18+ (Main Room), $13 in advance, $15 door, 8pm; 7th St. Entry Pre-show, All Ages $7

Good, great, amazing, etc etc. So yeah, jump over to the Aquarium Drunkard now and download the whole set (or at least “Superstition”). Enjoy!

Illinoise Gets a Little More Noize

Posted in Downloads with tags , , , , , , , on Thursday, March 12, 2009 by Erik Burg

album-coverIt’s always amazed me that Sufjan Stevens doesn’t get more play in the remix scene. His multi-instrumental masterpieces would act as the perfect backdrop in various mash-ups and mixtapes, but alas, there aren’t many other people out there with the same opinion. So when I came across this mix I was quite interested. Pitting Sufjan’s Illinoise against some of Hip-Hop’s finest, Tor presents fans like myself with a nice twist on an old favorite. It’s a hard sell as an entire album, but listening to one track here or there is a delight. So check it out and see what you think, you can download it all for free below. Enjoy!

  • Broken Social Scene Cover “Love Will Tear Us Apart” for Upcoming Movie

The ever-changing and always satisfying Broken Social Scene will make their big screen debut this summer in the movie The Time Traveler’s Wife. Both Brendan Canning and Kevin Drew will be paired up with Justin Peroff and Andrew Whiteman who will play a wedding band in the film.

The boys apparently cover Joy Division’s amazing, yet slightly ironic as a wedding tune, “Love Will Tear Us Apart.” I’m beyond excited to hear this cut, and it might actually propel me to see a movie in theaters (Last one I saw was the Dark Knight I think). Broken Social Scene has never let me down, and hearing them cover one of my favorite singles of all-time is a great prospect, simply put: amazing.

Yours Truly interviews P.O.S. and hosts “Goodbye” performance

This is a video of P.O.S. performing the song “Goodbye” off of his new album Never Better. “Goodbye” is one of my favorite songs off of the new album, and this performance of the song looks like it’s in a pretty intimate setting. As you can see in the background Plain Ole’ Bill is the DJ on the wheels of steel who cuts it up real nice. Make sure you pay attention to the beginning of the performance as Stef gives you a little bit of insight as to who he is.

Nadja covers “Only Shallow” by My Bloody Valentine

    Nadja

Ohhh, this is shoegaze after its been soaking in drone; Jesus, this is a beautiful track! Nadja never ceases to amaze me, and on this cover of “Only Shallow” by the legendary My Bloody Valentine (for the upcoming Nadja covers release) they are melding their own savory atmospheric drone/doom personality to the MBV Loveless opener of transcending psychedelic shoegaze valleys and crescendos.

Ma Dukes & Pete Rock Are Making Sure That Jay Stay Paid

Ma Dukes & Pete Rock Are Making Sure That Jay Stay Paid It truly looks like the one album I have been waiting on for the last two years will finally see the light of day. Pete Rock & J Dilla’s mother (Ma Dukes) will be releasing Dilla’s album of posthumas material that has never seen the light of day. The music on this album will include music from his old floppy disk and programs as well as music that Dilla made while he was in the hospital. Ma Dukes explains, “This album combines what he did in the beginning of his career, [and] what he did in some of our early hospital stays, which was very deep.” She says, “This is like the missing link to Dilla’s legacy”.

The part that I really like about this is that it is going to be something like a concept album where all of the tracks are being played over the radio, and Pete Rock is the DJ. You can expect guest appearances from Black Thought, The Roots, M.O.P. & DOOM. Sounds like this album is going to be one hell of a release. Watch out for Jay Stay Paid or [J$P] (for short) dropping on Nature Sounds on June 2nd. Continue reading

The Sunday Show, Episode 1 “Diggnation Tribute”

    Vodpod videos no longer available.

My cousin Dan hit me up on Facebook yesterday about a new podcast that him and his friends are doing called The Sunday Show. I was immediately interested because they are actually doing video podcasts. You may ask “Tim, what are these video podcasts going to be about every week?”, and my response would be, “Their tag line at The Sunday Show is: Your favorite new podcast about nothing in particular”. That’s right, there will be a different theme with every podcast that these guys put out. Judging by the first one, these guys could have one hell of a project on their hands. I was laughing my ass off while I was watching this.

The first episode of The Sunday Show is called “Diggnation Tribute”. These guys are all avid Diggers, and they are pulling out all of the stops and discussing some of their recent favorites from the site. There are a few of these that almost had me crying I was laughing so hard. I highly recommend that you guys watch this because it’s some great insight and entertainment from the Midwest. ALSO, if you have a Facebook and are interested in joining their fan page you can do that here. Make sure you stay tuned to Mind Inversion for all of the updates on future episodes of The Sunday Show.

If you have any good ideas or insights for these guys shoot them an e-mail at: sundayshowpodcast@gmail.com

Review: Brother Ali, The Truth Is Here EP

Posted in Music Reviews with tags , , , on Monday, March 9, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Brother Ali, The Truth Is HereThere isn’t one project that Brother Ali has done that I can say is below average, or below great for that matter. This effort follows the same track record Ali has gained for himself and shoots him miles into the atmosphere (no pun intended) of greatness. There’s no denying it, Ant & Brother Ali can make some great fucking music. If you only gave these two a tape recorder and a snare drum there’s still a great chance that they could cook up a classic. The chemistry between these two just meshes seamlessly and every time they make a record it’s a classic, or as close to it as you can get. Continue reading

    R.I.P. Biggie Smalls (5/21/72-3/9/97)

Posted in News, Video with tags , on Monday, March 9, 2009 by Tim Althaus

fp8997notorious-big-posters Today marks the passing of one of the greatest emcees of all time, Christopher Wallace A.K.A. The Notorious B.I.G. I admit all the time that I don’t listen to Biggie enough, but he is literally one of the most ferocious emcees I have had the pleasure of hearing. This guy tore everything in his way apart, from crack to rap he had the game sealed in every aspect. It really didn’t matter who was on the beat, it could have been Premo or Pete Rock, either way Biggie killed it. Everything that this guy did was ahead of his time. His lyrics were totally on point and he coined some of the best lines that anyone has ever heard. Continue reading
