“I’m Girl Talk, and I’m a PC”

Greg Gillis (a.k.a Girl Talk) is known for making his crazy ass fucking mash-ups of pop and rock songs that make you want to go crazy. I don’t like pop or maintstream music at all, but what this guy can do to music is absolutely incredible if you haven’t heard of him go download Feed the Animals (you can download for free or pay a penny if you like). In this video Gillis admits that he uses a PC instead of the traditional Mac that is used with making music. He talks about his theories on music, why he likes PC software (“punk”) and a couple of other things. Notice the background images of his shows, they are epic as hell and look like a crazy time. *Edit from ericbandloveaffair* holy shit that was the greatest night of my life, Gillis was absolutely insane and i took home a ton of shwag, including a sweaty Greg Gillis sweat band and a GT all access pass. more pics here

*** Note my boy Burg (ericbandloveaffair) (on the right side in the picture above) next to Gillis when he performed at First Avenue (He looks like he’s totally feeling it).

EDITOR’S NOTE: now I’m feeling it!

Video: Illa J “My Brothers Keeper” Pt. 1 & 2

Illa J released his solo debut Yancey Boys (on Delicious Vinyl) last week on Tuesday which is comprised completely of beats done by his big brother (and my inspiration) J Dilla. This is another album I just haven’t gotten a good listen of yet, but I can guarantee that this album will be something special. If you can all think about what Jay Dee’s sound was like back in the Ummah era (Tribe, Pharcyde) then you know what I am talking about. I will try to get a good listen here and get a review up for you guys soon. If you are a fan of Dilla or anything that sounds like him go out and get this album Illa J is definitely someone to watch for.

Check out these video interviews, the videos skew a good amount of material. It’s amazing to see just how much music was really coming out of the Yancey family. No wonder J Dilla and Illa J are beasts.

Video: Q-Tip “Move” (Live on Letterman)

Posted in Video with tags , , , on Monday, November 10, 2008 by Tim Althaus

tipWell as most of you heads in the Hip-Hop world know, Q-Tip (of A Tribe Called Quest) released his sophomore LP The Renaissance last Tuesday. I haven’t gotten a really good listen of this record yet, but I know that I am highly anticipating it. This is Tip’s first album in 9 years (Amplified was released in ’99 (which was produced entirely by Dilla) ), and there has been no sign of Tribe anywhere (except Rock the Bells last year). I must admit I heard a snippet of the song “Move” and I almost went nuts. I had to find out who produced that track because the sample was flipped just perfect and I couldn’t get enough. I then found out that Tip produced the entire album except for that one track. Does anyone wanna talk a wild guess who the producer of “Move” is? That’s right my man Dilla did the beat and to be honest I’m really not surprised because he was the best at what he did, and that’s making beats. This beat is no different with a great sample flip of the Jackson 5 that sounds like Dilla chopped the track like butcher meat.

I’ve heard a few tracks off of this record and I can honestly tell you that Tip has some serious skill on the MP, and that this record jives way more like a disco-hop than anything. I love the vibe I’ve heard and I’m going to get a review up really soon. In the meantime check this great performance of “Move” live on Letterman.

Video: Fashawn “Our Way” (feat. Evidence)

It seems like just about everything I post these days has a mention of Evidence. In this case it’s no different, but this time he is featuring for another artist named Fashawn from the Cali area. I first heard this guy when Evidence put out his video for “The Far Left” (off the LAyover EP). This guy definitely can do his thing on the mic, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him popping up in a lot more. He released a free mixtape called: One Shot Kill Mixtape (click the link for free download), and his debut album is going to be produced entirely by DJ Exile, who if you remember did the album Below The Heavens last year with Blu. Check this vid out and go check out Fashawn to, you should see a lot more of him sooner than later.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Jake One: “Hurt U” (Featuring Pharoahe Monch & Kardinal Offishall)

I was really dissapointed when I initially heard that this track was going to be an iTunes bonus. I had gotten the deluxe (2 cd edition) of White Van Music (on Rhymesayers Entertainment) and listened to the shit out of it (I loved it). I then heard that there was a track floating around with Pharoahe Monch on it and I wanted to have it. Okayplayer made a post about it yesterday and I had to have a listen. Pharoahe and Kardinal Offishall pass this track like desert, taking a huge bite whenever it’s their turn to devour the mic. If you like vicious, fast paced rhymes then you will love this track. Also notice the guitar loop Jake has going on in the background, that shit’s sick…

Deftones bassist Chi Cheng in coma following car crash

Posted in Music News with tags , on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 by Ryan Buege

The Sacramento Bee reports that Deftones bassist Chi Cheng is in a coma in a San Jose hospital following a car accident in Santa Clara on Monday (November 3). It isn’t immediately clear what caused the crash or if anyone else was injured, but Cheng is currently listed as being in “serious, but stable condition”. Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno confirmed the accident today in a posting at the Deftones studio blog for their forthcoming album Eros:

“It deeply saddens me to inform you all that our brother Chi Cheng was involved in a terrible car accident [Monday] night. He is currently in a Northern California hospital in serious, but stable condition. I am on my way up north right now to be by his side, along with the rest of our bandmates and family. Chi is one of the strongest people I know, and I’m praying that his strength will get him through this. Please say a prayer for him as well.”

What’s even more disheartening is that apparently Cheng was leaving a memorial service for his older brother when his car was hit.. My thoughts are with Chi and his friends and family. Get better soon so that you can finish up that cd and get back out on the road to see us! You’re in our prayers man!
