New Audio: Friendly Fires, “Skeleton Boy” (Air France Remix)

Posted in Downloads with tags , , , , , , , on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 by Erik Burg

So this was pretty much amazing news for today. Two of my favorite new bands that I discovered in 2008 getting together for the forthcoming Skeleton Boy 12″ due out March 3rd here in the US. Friendly Fires have been hot on the remix trail, with their Aeroplane remix for Skeleton Boy also getting tons of play lately. Which is a great thing, hopefully it’s turning people onto their amazing self-titled debut and the group gains more and more momentum heading into their sophomore release. Lending a hand to “Skeleton Boy” this time is Air France, the outstanding and dreamy Swedish pop duo. Their 2008 release, No Way Down, took a long time to hit the states, but when it finally did it was extremely well received. Filled with massive landscapes and sprawling synths, the vocally sampled album is still on repeat on my iPod.

The result of this two greats is well… great, of course. Air France completely takes the song over and makes it totally its own. Added are the airy spaces that Air France is so fine at crafting, taken away are the Cut Copy like 80’s new wave bass lines. So yeah, it’s a really fun track, and definitely a great takeover for Air France, holding me over ever slightly until their next album. Enjoy!

New Audio: Swan Lake, “A Hand at Dusk”

Okay so here is the deal, I’m in class right now so I haven’t listened to this yet. BUT, I’m sure it’s amazing, seeing as Swan Lake’s debut album Beast Moans was great and Spencer Krug’s track-record is nearly spotless. March 23rd is the release date for their next album, Enemy Mine. So yeah, check out the track below and enjoy!

So the day has come. The greatest compilation I’ve ever been a part of. And by “been a part of” I mean “relished over”. So yeah, Dark Was The Night releases today on 4Ad records, it comes on triple vinyl or double disc or even iTunes download, but MOST IMPORTANT is that fact that ALL PROCEEDS go to the Red Hot Organization to HELP FIGHT AND CURE AIDS. Why not do a great thing today, and enjoy some of the best new music out there. Please take my advice, if only for this once.

New Audio: The Decemberists, “The Hazards of Love”

From their forthcoming release on Capitol Records, slated to be releases March 24th, The Decemberists have begun streaming the title track to The Hazards of Love. It’s a little slower than some of their other material, and especially more than the other single “Rake’s Song”. The track runs fairly long too, and can become a bit boring. At nearly seven and a half minutes, “The Hazards of Love” is a promising track for the album. Like I said, it’s not overwhelming or mesmerizing at all, but it’s really solid and grounded in being good at what it’s good at. (Kind of reminds me of what I think about the new Andrew Bird album). Anyway, check it out for sure and enjoy!

Valentine’s Day Audio: Cymarshall Law – “Luve Story”

Cymarshall Law drops an exclusive track for Valentine’s day. What a nice guy. “Luve Story” is a beautiful song, and definitely a perfect treat for this day of love. The lyrics are maybe a little over-played and cheesy, but hey, if there is ever a day for such nonsense, today is that day. The track is a lot more soulful and smooth than anything on his album releases, which I really enjoy. “Luve Story” is the perfect track for those who couldn’t get into Cymarshall’s other material and a great gift on this day of celebration. Enjoy, and tell someone you love them!

New Audio: High Places – “Anyango”

A good start to a friday, if I’ve ever had one. A new High Places track from their upcoming album Thank You Very Quickly was released this morning, delighting listeners of their amazing afro-american infusion music. I’ve been digging tunes like this lately, whether it’s Very Best, El Guincho, or The Ruby Suns, I’ve been loving worldy influenced music. “Anyango” delivers a strong punch, and is a great start to their new album. Funky bass lines and amazing drumming heavily influenced by the African members of the group, “Anyango” is definietly worth checkign out if you haven’t heard anything by High Places yet. Enjoy and happy friday!

Video + New Audio: Simian Mobile Disco – “Synthesise”

Posted in Media, Music News, Video with tags , , , , , , on Thursday, February 12, 2009 by Erik Burg

Simian Mobile Disco have stayed fairly busy since their amazing 2007 release Attack Sustain Decay Release. Though the album didn’t gain as much support as it deserved (thank Justice and Daft Punk touring for that) the boys still released plenty of single around the album, touring heavily in support, and fixed up a Fabriclive mix as well. I haven’t heard much in the way of official plans for their next release, fingers crossed that it’s this year, but a new song they’ve been playing live got the video treatment. Though the video is nothing special, seeing as it’s just the video accompiament for when they play the track live, the song is something to stick around for. “Synthesise” is more beat driven and heavy than some of their prior songs that may have relied a bit more on vocal samples. At any rate though, it’s definitely worth a listen. Enjoy!

This cut though, from indie heavyweights Spoon, is a bit of a let down. Sorry guys, but this fast fasted and confusing song doesn’t remind me of anything Spoon has done in the past. At first I wanted to tap-my-toe along to “Well Alright” but eventually I just wanted to turn it off. But I suppose if there is any place to take the band in a different direction, this would be the place to do it. Oh well I guess, everything else I’ve heard from Dark Was The Night has sounded pretty much amazing, so I’ve still got high hopes and anxious nerves running through my veins for this release. Grab the mp3 below and see what you think. Enjoy!

New Audio: Black Lips – “Trapped in a Basement”

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Music News with tags , , , , , , , on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 by Erik Burg

While I’m not, by any means, a huge fan of the Black Lips, usually one or two from each album usually gets my attention enough to put on repeat for a while. Their third album, due to drop the 24th of this month, entitled 200 Million Thousand has been getting some play around the blogosphere as of late. This cut comes courtesy of the great people at I Guess I’m Floating. “Trapped in a Basement” is a bit of a change from their other material, but for me at least, it’s a welcome change. Shifting from the sound that makes me want to smash an empty beer bottle over my friends head, “Trapped” takes it down a notch while still remaining interesting. The lo-fi production remains, the scratchy vocals remain, but along with this track comes the lingering feeling that these guys would have fit in perfectly with the Doors, Yardbirds, and other classic rock groups.

It’s definitely worth a look, and it’s definitely going to put some people off, but in the end I believe it’s a great step forward for the psych-rock-grunge band. Keep your eyes out for this release on the 24th on Vice Records. Enjoy!
