Blue Scholars official EP release announcement + another free track

Posted in Art, Downloads, Media, Music News, News with tags , , , , on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 by Nolan Levenson

Today Blue Scholars released on their website/blog the tracklisting for their new EP entitled OOF! The project will be released August 25th via Massline/Duck Down. The inspiration for the album came from MC Geo’s Hawaiin roots and the Scholars return trip last New Year’s. The Scholars claim it will be “their most collaborative multi-media project” working with artist Andy Woebots to create art for the single “HI-808” that will later be printed and sold on a limited edition T-shirt. In addition, they will be working with photographer Aaron Yoshino. A new video for “HI-808” will be released too, made by Hawaii production team Kai Media and edited by DJ/Producer Sabzi’s brother Zia Mohajerjasbi.

The EP will have 6 brand new tracks from the Scholars (and the instrumentals although the instrumental titles are different). The EP will be released digitally along with limited edition 808 CDs. Follow me after the jump for the tracklisting and downloads.

E & A – “Junk” (Video)

Posted in News, Video with tags , , , on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 by Nolan Levenson

Vodpod videos no longer available.

When I went to see Eyedea and Abilites at Fifth Element in Minneapolis recently, they were showing this video on the monitors. Although I am not the biggest E & A fan, the video did look very cool. The video has now been released and it’s for the son entitled “Junk”. It featureas a lot of cool scenes, including a big white room with sweet angles of Abilities scratching. Check it out! Shout out to 2dopeboyz.

New Kidz in the Hall Album

Posted in Audio, Music News, News with tags , , on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 by Nolan Levenson

The duo Kidz in the Hall will be releasing a new album on October 13th entitled Land of Make Believe. I’ve seen them rock at Paid Dues and RTB ’08 and they are a lot of fun. Naledge is a talented MC and Double O a capable producer.  I like a bunch of their songs, but sometimes I feel like they are inconsistent. Hopefully the new album will not dissappoint. Above is the audio for the new single “Flickin'”.

Double O had this to say about the new album: “The Land of Make Believe is different things for different people. For us it is the space between where we are now as artists, and where we feel we should be. It’s the idea that until you actually get to your destination or goal you have to act like you are already there.”

Shout out to Hip Hop DX for the quote.

Spotted on OnSmash.

On April 11 Red Bull Big Tune made the leap from bass pumping clubs to the living rooms of 340,000 music fans during its American television debut on the BET network. The 30-minute TV show chronicled the adventures of 16 up-and-coming music producers as they embark on the final battle to determine once and for all who has ‘the big tune’ and who will walk away with the coveted title of Red Bull Big Tune Champion and a chance to collaborate with a well-known recording artist in Red Bull Studios.
When the final battle ended the crowd determined that the producer with ‘the big tune’ and the ultimate winner of the competition was 17-year-old Charles ‘C-Sick’ Dumazer of Chicago, Ill. In the time immediately following the final battle, C-Sick had a lot to contemplate. Who would he select to work with in the studio? After some deliberation he selected Def Jam recording artist Nas, one of hip-hop’s most profound lyrical poets. Nas is well known for his 1994 debut album Illmatic, which many consider to be one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. His upcoming tour and album with Damian Marley has many on the edge of their seats.

Nasty Nas recorded this track over Red Bull Big Tune winner C-Sick beat to make a pretty sweet track.

Blue Scholars sign to Duck Down records

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on Monday, July 27, 2009 by Nolan Levenson

Blue Scholars, my favorite group, has announced that they have signed to a joint venture to Duck Down Records. I’ve suspected this move for about a year now since I saw the Scholars talking to Duck Down CEO Dru Ha before their show in NY. The move will allow them to continue to control their own music via their label Massline while getting better distribution of their record. On August 25th, they will be releasing an EP called “OOF!”. On September 1st, their 2007 album Bayani will be re-released and will be called Bayani Redux. It will include one brand new track and 2 songs that were previously available only digitally.

Personally, I don’t really understand the move. Blue Scholars sound nothing like anything else on Duck Down, musically or lyrically. I think the distribution is great for them, but I am puzzled by the move by both parties. However, I do hope for their success with this decision.

More new music from the Scholars is also expected soon so sit tight!

The video above shows Sabzi on Seattle’s brand new Light Rail and at the end has someone asking him about signing to Duck Down.

You can download the track “Coo” off their new EP here or on their blog. I saw them perform it live at Soundset this year and its a sweet song.

New Jay-Z single – “Run This Town” (feat. Kanye West and Rihanna)

This is the new single of Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3 called “Run This Town”. It features Rihanna and Kanye. The beat is good, but the verses from Jay and Ye are a little weak. Overall the track gets kind of boring, it’s not really a new sound. The album is due out September 11th and I’m hoping it will be great.

Found this one on Okayplayer.

You can download it here.
