New Releases From Asthmatic Kitty

asthmatickittylogoAshtmatic Kitty has been on a role lately. The record label, run by indie-glorified Sufjan Stevens, has been busy with releases in early ’09 and late ’08, and has managed to curate tons of attention with the release of two rising artists. The Welcome Wagon and DM Stith are those two acts, gaining attention at rapidly increasing rates. And for good reason, whether it’s the almost quirky nature of their music, the comfortability that each offer, or the familiarity that oozes from each track.

Let’s dive into The Welcome Wagon first. The Husband (Thomas) and Wife (Monique) duo deliver multi-instrumental music that is heavenly in more than one sense. Many of the lyrics and ideas expressed in the tracks draw upon biblical references and experiences, while not pushing any values upon the listener. The actual musical production draws upon many of the aspects of arrangement and production that has made Sufjan so popular. From the occasional banjo to the simple piano and back again with the well recognizable horn section. The first single, entitled “Sold! To The Nice Rich Man,” from their debut album Welcome to The Welcome Wagon is their most polished and well rounded cut. It offers the widest variety of the couple’s skills. Encompassing all of the aspects that I just mentioned, the horns drive the chorus, the keys lead into the track, and the vocals fill up the track much a choir in a church. The feel of the entire album is expansive, but like I said, it feels incredibly comfortable at the same time. Deserving of a huge 2009, The Welcome Wagon is one of my favorite new artists and I’d highly encourage any fan of Sufjan’s catalogue or label to check these two out.

DM Stith. With a name like that it’s kind of hard to know what to expect, but with a background filled with musical education and family lineage that bolsters the same thing the hopes were high for this former writer. Stith’s first single, “Just Once,” off of the Curtain Speech EP is a seven minute roller coaster ride through a dream-like landscape of repetitive and revealing lyrics and echoing guitars. “Just once, I could love you just once” Stith sings throughout. The music, is incredible. I know I hype pretty much everything I write about, but this is another one of those tracks that re-invigorates my love for music and makes me simply feeling happy at the end. Best described as a hi-fi version of The Microphones, Stith plays with various guitar chords layered together and eerie sounds running throughout the track, giving it the feel that The Glow pt. 2 gave me the first time I heard it.

So if you’re looking around for some great new music look no further. Fans of past Asthmatic Kitty releases will love and probably already heard these tracks, but those new to the game need to get schooled on these new artists. And fast!

NEW AUDIO: Eminem Feat. 50 Cent and Dr. Dre – “Crack A Bottle”

eminemdreIt’s finally here folks, the finished version of “Crack a Bottle”. The other version that was floating around the web wasn’t nearly finished in production, and thus turned many of its listeners off. But this time around Eminem, Dr.  Dre, and 50 cent absolutely kill it. As much as we may doubt mainstream rap on this site, or much as we might dismiss this right away, I’m happy to say that I infact do enjoy this cut. It’s beyond refreshing to have Eminem back on the scene, seeing as he is one of the few mainstream artists whos talent expands beyond the auto-tuner.

The wait was well worth it for thsi track, too. With the final touches put on it the beat roars throughout and the track runs the perfect length as to not get too repetitive. The best verse in the song has to be in the second have when Eminem introduces Dre and he steps in to just flat out kill the track. It’s worth every listen you give it and one of the few reasons why there might be hope for the mainstream music scene, if only for this short period of time. enjoy!

Thanks to You Ain’t No Picasso and JP’s Blog for the tip-off on this one. For a live bootleg the quality is pretty good, so it’s an enjoyable listen for sure. You know what you’re getting into with Grizzly Bear, I’m still not a huge fan but hopefully some of you out there enjoy this. I still can’t listen to “Knife”.

Audio: Smashing Pumpkins release free mp3 for “FOL”

Posted in Downloads with tags , , on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 by Ryan Buege

As you may have heard, Smashing Pumpkins premiered a new song called “FOL” this past Sunday during a Hyundai commercial which aired during a certain well-publicized sporting event that day. Now, courtesy of Hyundai, you can download the song for free (with an email address) from their website. Forget that the song aired for the first time during the Super Bowl pregame show, Corgan seems to have plenty of detractors these days anyway – but to my ears he’s still got that magic 20 years on, and I thinnnnk that’s all that matters. I’m sure we’ll (hopefully) soon be hearing about more Pumpkins music to be released in the near future, but for now click below to get the latest.

New Audio: Fleet Foxes – “False Knight on the Road”

It’s nice to hear a new single from one of my favorite bands that isn’t from the Dark Was The Night compilation. This time around it’s Fleet Foxes with a cover of Steeleye Span’s 1976 track “False Knight on the Road.” Fleet Foxes version comes on the B-side of their newest release, the U.K. only Mykonos 7″.

The track certainly doesn’t make head-way into new aspects of Fleet Foxes releases, or show off any talent that wasn’t already flaunted on their two 2008 releases. It’s not all bad though, seeing as their formula turned out one of the better albums of 2008 that is still managing to captivate new listeners. “False Knight on the Road” is a fine track that would have blended seamlessly into their self-titled album, making it a great edition to the Fleet Foxes catalogue, yet it remains nothing ground breaking for the group. Grab the track below. enjoy!

Just like the Pavement concert I linked to here a little while ago, Aquarium Drunkard delivers again with some bootleg live cuts. This time from the Pantages Theater in 2004. You kind of know what to expect from these guys, but the magic they create together is great, I’d definitely recommend checking these tracks out.

Audio: The Whitest Boy Alive – “Island”

wbalogoThe outpour of new music lately is unprecedented. I feel like an idiot jumping on here again and praising some blog-worthy track to the max, but here I go. (It’ll be fun this time, I promise). The Whitest Boy Alive is an interesting group, not only because its name suggests it’s a white parody-rapper or something of that sort, but because of the music as well. With only one album release out at the moment, the hugely under-rated 2007 “Dreams,” Whitest Boy plays some of the most polished and soothing songs on the market. Tracks like “Fireworks” and “Golden Cage” combine soft vocals with amazing song-writing and mix in plenty of guitar with rhythmic cymbal crashing. Maybe not so graceful sounding when I put it in words, but check the video below if you don’t believe me. Whitest Boy Alive performing “Golden Cage” live on BBC:

“Islands” is the first single off of the upcoming sophomore album “Rules” which is slated to be released in “early March” according to their Myspace. The track is much more electronically influenced, sprawling nearly seven minutes of synth heaven. Much of what makes Whitest Boy Alive so great remains, however, thanks to the vocals drums. Much of the guitar work is traded for the synthesizer, as I mentioned, giving the track a much more don-tempo disco sort of feel. It’s not really a bad thing, it’s not really a good thing, merely change. Reminding me a lot of Mock & Toof or Still Going, “Islands” is a great track to have on in the background of something, but certainly is not something that is going to steal the show. wbalogo2

It raises my hopes for “Rules” slightly, seeing as I didn’t hate the track, now hopefully Whitest Boy Alive can stay with this vibe for a whole album. A track that long heard out of context can be quite different than hearing it in the middle of a twelve track LP. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, but for now we have this at least, enjoy!

Audio: Calvin Harris – “I’m Not Alone” Radio Rip

calvin-harris1

With the 2007 release of his debut album entitled “I Created Disco,” Calvin Harris burst onto the scene just about as fast as he disappeared from it. Riding the wave of stellar electro-pop that year with Justice, Simian Mobile Disco, and Digitalism all lighting up the charts, Harris was heralded for a while but then was immediately dismissed as “the same cookie cutter bullshit” that was floating around in heavy amounts that summer.

I have to say though, that “I Created Disco” however cookie cutter it may be, was a fun album. I got plenty of plays out of it, and when it comes up on shuffle now-a-days its a great refresher. I guess I was sort of dismissing a sophomore album from him though, thinking that it might just be over-the-top and foolish a la his track with Dizzee Rascal “Dance Wiv Me.”

But here I sit, enraptured by Harris’ newest single. Premiering on what seems to be some sort of French electro radio/podcast (it’s a radio rip so he talks near the end, but it doesn’t take away from the essence of the song at all) “I’m Not Alone” is pretty different from his past material. And in a really good way. Instead of the same old indie-hipster-electro-techno whatever you want to call it, Harris goes the route of 80’s new-wave house. Well, it’s kind of hard to describe and certainly not easy to categorize, for whatever it’s worth though it’s good. Like I said, “I’m Not Alone” absolutely booms with energy and club vibe, sounding like something you might hear overseas at a Tiesto show rather than on the average teenage kid’s iPod.

I’ll stop trying to describe a song that simply has to be heard. Whether you dismissed his first release or simply haven’t heard him yet, Harris will be making waves with this release, so be ahead of the curb and grab “I’m Not Alone” now!

Audio: N.A.S.A. – “The Mayor” featuring The Cool Kids, Ghostface Killah, Scarface, and DJ AM

Posted in Downloads with tags , , , , , , , on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 by Erik Burg

nasaWhile more and more material from North America South America, better known as N.A.S.A, leaks out I get more an more anxious to listen to the whole disc front to back. The beyond ambitious group is making noise amongst all crowds with prior leaks featuring Lil Wayne and another featuring Chuck D, not to mention tracks that feature Tom Waits and Karen O.

This track though comes close to being the best leak thus far. “The Mayor” is a track that bangs from front to back, reminding listeners of what rap and hip-hop infused can really result in. The collaborative effort is astonishing considering the amount of talent on one track. I’ve gotta say that Ghostface takes the cake and really makes the track, which is somewhat disappointing for high my hopes were for the Cool Kids on this album.

Give a listen for sure though, and be sure to check out the album release February 17th on Squeak E. Clean records
