Muja Messiah freestyles at Peter Parker’s on B96

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on Thursday, February 26, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Via Culture Bully, B96 recently had the the self-proclaimed “hottest thing cooking” in Minneapolis, Muja Messiah, in the studio and he displayed his incredible flow on air for the rest of the city to hear. They discuss a range of topics, from fake and stupid MCs to Muja’s own steadily rising career, and after a few minutes Muja freestyles over his own beat that he brought with him into the studio. Hit play and watch the video to see why this guy’s name never stops coming up in the local hip-hop conversation lately.

meetsflyerqp0While they’re hyping his show at Axis next week, I want to remind everyone about the awesome set that’s planned at Fine Line next week featuring sets of Atmosphere meets Brother Ali, Muja Messiah meets M.anifest, Toki Wright meets St. Paul Slim, and DJ Jimmy 2 Times meets DJ Plain Ole Bill. This is a local hip-hop event for the record books, and you should do everything in your power to make it to this show. Click the flier to read more!

Lykke Li gets a blast from the past on Nardwuar

Posted in Video with tags , , , on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 by Ryan Buege

This is a great interview, simply because of the crazy number of props this dude is hiding in his bin. Lykke has a hard time responding to the questions because she’s just so amazed by what this wacky Canadian keeps pulling out, and it’s quite hilarious. She gave an incredible performance a few weeks ago at the Varsity in MPLS and Culture Bully captured the whole show. Anyone who’s asking themselves “why should I care?” should quickly set themselves straight; dig deeper to find out what you’re missing from this beautiful Swede.

Talib Rocks the Bells with Mos Def and Blacksmith TV

Posted in Video with tags , , , , on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Vodpod videos no longer available.

The first part of this video that I posted was the events leading up to when Talib Kweli performed at Rock the Bells last year. This video shows all of the chaos that ensued after Talib actually made it to the Rock the Bells festival. It’s funny because in the beginning they are telling him that he only has 5 minutes to perform, but Kwe being the guy that he is goes on and does a 23 minute set. He also does some Black Star material with Mos Def at the end of Mos Def’s set. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to see Talib live, let alone Black Star in the same concert. Mos and Kweli give each other so much energy to feed off of, and their live show looks nothing short of spectacular.

Suite For Ma Dukes (Finale & Encore)

Posted in Video with tags , on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 by Tim Althaus

I seriously can’t tell you how much I wish I could have been in L.A. for this. It was pretty much the one thing that I wanted to see this year. As you will notice, De La Soul came out to perform some tracks as well as Talib Kweli. I haven’t had the chance to listen to this EP yet, but I can’t wait until I actually do.

Chali 2na teaches Freestyle 101 to G4

This man is one of the best in my opinion. The “syllable killa/verbal gorilla” Chali 2na has a voice that is unparalleled by anyone else. When you hear that deep voice start on the track you know the beat is going to get decimated. In this video for G4 TV, Chali 2na spits a pretty ridculous freestyle (it starts off slow, but once he gets into it he lights it up) and talks about his introduction to the art of freestyle, both in the neighborhood and professionally. Chali is one of those guys that you have to listen to because everything he does is just that ill. Make sure you go out and get the Jurassic 5 EP re-issue right away.

A Half-Life Movie? Part 1?

Posted in Culture, Video with tags , , , on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 by Tim Althaus

I initially thought that this was a trailer for a new game, and was totally stoked when I saw that the graphics looked life like. I then realized that this was part of a movie series for Half-Life: Escape From City-17. Half-Life 2 is one of my favorite video games of all time. Watching this movie took me back to playing as good ole’ Gordon Freeman trying to save the world from zombies. If any of you have played any of the Half-Life games you know exactly what I am talking about. My guess is that these videos are just going to come in parts online, but hey that is definitely good enough for me. Keep the Gordon Freeman, ass kicking & blood bursting saga coming.Valve looks like they’ve truly put together something that’s going to be nice to watch.

Editor’s Note: Keep in mind that this was all done on a five hundred dollar budget.

Cancer Bats on the “Deathsmarch”, new music video

Posted in Video with tags , , , , , , on Monday, February 23, 2009 by Ryan Buege

Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve always envied the the prolific and seemingly “tight-knit” Toronto/Buffalo hardcore-punk scene; its no secret that there has been a long line of stellar bands to from this region, and this post is about the latest. The brand new “Deathsmarch” music video is pretty much quintessential Cancer Bats, a Toronto band of gritty punk rockers that is quickly gaining notoriety. “Deathsmarch” may be a bit more mid-paced than usual from these guys, but at its core it’s still the enthralling, disgusting, southern infected hardcore that they are known for. While perhaps a bit cheesy at times (though I think that probably has more to do with the overly enthusiastic fans than anything else), the video is a pretty awesome clip. It’s a really well-shot piece that could easily be mistaken for one of their lives shows if it the edit weren’t so clean.

When they are at their best, there is no one better at what they do. The over-the-top riffage and impassioned, engaging vocals that make their live shows so fun are also exactly what make “Deathsmarch” a great aural piece for this type of clip. Enjoy!

Brother Ali Brings You the 2nd Part of the “Good Lord” Promo

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Here is the second part of the “Good Lord” promo. The first part is an intro with Brother Ali and Rik Cordero, and then Ali goes into an acapella of a new track. It sounds like The Truth is Here is going to be more classic material from Brother Ali. Make sure you go grab that shit when it comes out next month. Stay tuned to Mind Inversion for the review.

Jam Session for Ma Dukes

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Friday, February 20, 2009 by Tim Althaus

This video was shot back in January when Suite for Ma Dukes was being prepared. This Sunday February 22nd, the Suite for Ma Dukes will be going down with a 36 piece orchestra in LA. If I was in the area there is absolutely no way that I would miss this show, it’s going to be an amazing representation of a legend’s music. In the video you can here these guys putting together a “from scratch” version of Slum Village “Fall in Love“. It sounds like this album is going to have a very nostalgic feel to it, and I can wait to hear it. You can download the EP on iTunes here. Make sure you grab the album and keep listening to Dilla, because February is Dilla month. TURN IT UP!

Video: Asher Roth & Nottz in the Studio

I posted about these guys earlier (seperate posts though) and now I’m posting a video of Nottz & Asher Roth in the studio. From the way things sound from the video Nottz & Asher are going to be putting out some classic material. They mention making nine tracks in 24 hours, and at the end all Nottz can say is “You’ll see…You’ll see”. I look forward to being able to listen to the material that these guys are talking about because it sounds like it’s going to be nuts.
