Elzhi Spits it A Cappella Style

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , on Monday, September 28, 2009 by Tim Althaus

This is the shit that I’m talking about. If you haven’t heard of Elzhi, you might as well have been sleeping under a rock. This guy is so good at what he does, there really aren’t many emcees in the game that can touch this dude. I personally would probably put him in my top 3 emcees right now without a doubt. Slum Village recently did a show out in LA, and this A Cappella is just a nice little snippet of the skill that El possesses.

Brother Ali, Evidence, Toki Wright & BK-One, “Freshest Kids” (Track Download x Video)

Posted in Audio, Downloads, Media, Video with tags , , , , , on Sunday, September 27, 2009 by Tim Althaus

First of all, let me start off by saying that “Freshest Kids” might be the track of the year. This shit is just plain ridiculous. I posted a video of Brother Ali & Toki recording this track a little while back, and this is the finished product. The beat on this track is incredible and all three emcees spits verses so hot it might leave your ears with third degree burns. I gotta give it up to BK-One, he’s concocted one of the best beats I’ve heard this year with this track. I’m bowing to these guys right now. And to think, they only recorded this track just for the tour… make sure you catch these guys when they come to your city, it’s going to be one hell of a show.

Alchemist Talks: Chemical Warfare, Step Brothers, Hats & Ping Pong

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Friday, September 25, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Man, every time Alchemist says something he makes me laugh my ass off. He’s probably one of the funniest guys in Hip-Hop. You should definitely watch this one for a few good laughs. AL talks about his new album Chemical Warfare (in stores now), his collaboration with Evidence (Step Brothers), the hats that he wears in the game & how he is ridiculous at ping pong. Fucking love it.

The Roots, “How I Got Over” (Trailer)

It looks like The Roots are about to take things to a whole new level yet again. Here is the teaser trailer for the track “How I Got Over”, off of their forthcoming LP of the same name. According to 2DopeBoyz, the album has a release date of November 17th even though they still haven’t turned in the final copy. As you can tell from the video, this track (and album) is fucking awesome. Black Thought is one of those emcees that most people just can’t touch. Keep your eye out for more information on the Illadelphians.

Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, Big Tone & DJ Graffiti x Splash!-Mag

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Definitely a great thing to see coverage on Detroit Hip-Hop, it’s my favorite shit out there (no offense Minneapolis), no one is bringing a sound to the Midwest (with the exception of MPLS) like Dietroit. Splash!-Mag caught up with Guilty Simpson, Phat Kat, Big Tone & DJ Graffiti this year at the Splash! Festival. Big Tone talks about how it’s his first time over in Europe and what that experience is like. Phat Kat talks about his new album that he is finishing up, The Katacombs, and an album called Co-Still that he is working on with Elzhi (that’s what I like to hear).

Guilty grabs the mic and mentions his album with Madlib, says that the Random Axe project is just about done, and that he is also working on his second official release. He delves into the OJ Simpson album and talks a little bit about what you can expect to hear. I had heard something near catastrophic happened on the Random Axe project, and Guilty tells us that Black Milk did indeed lose a lot of the work associated with the album. Sean Price & Guilty Simpson had to re-record their vocals for the album.

There is so much more in this interview that is great, I mean it’s 20 minutes long. Take some notes from one of the best Hip-Hop cities in the country.

Shouts to 2DopeBoyz on the look.

Brother Ali & Evidence Talk to Mr. Peter Parker @ Us Midnight Release

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , , on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 by Tim Althaus

As many of you know, Brother Ali’s latest album Us dropped yesterday. If you haven’t bought it yet you should be pummeled to death, because it’s absolutely incredible. Ant’s puts forth some of the best beats I’ve ever heard him make, and Brother Ali’s rhymes are sure to move you.

Peter Parker had a chance to catch up with both of these emcees at Brother Ali’s midnight album release at Fifth Element. Brother Ali talks a lot about the new album and what it means to him. He also talks about BK-One’s new album coming out October 6th, Radio Do Canibal.

Parker got a pretty long interview with Evidence, and they discuss a wide variety of topics. EV discusses what it’s like to be a part of the Rhymesayers team, what it was like to lose AM (good friends), how his solo material is different than the Dilated material, Rakaa’s new album Crown of Thorns (February 2010), and the new Dilated Peoples album (Damn…). This is just one of the reasons I love Evidence the most, dude is humble and everything he says is on point.

BK-One, “Team Do Canibal”

Here is the second cut we’ve been able to hear off of BK-One’s new album with Benzilla, Rádio do Canibal. This track features The Hypnotic Brass Band, which is a 9 piece group out of Chicago. From what I’ve heard, this album sounds like it’s going to have some incredible beats. Pick that shit up on October 6th and support local music.

Brother Ali Performs “The Preacher” in Paris

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , on Sunday, September 20, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Us comes out on Tuesday, and I have already been hearing quite a few people herald it as the best album of the year hands down. It’ll be nice to take my 10:05-11:15 break from class to run to Best Buy and scoop the new album, and immediately throw it in my CD player. The video above, which I caught over at 2Dopeboyz, features Ali performing the track  “The Preacher” off of the album Us. Sounds like Ali might have another classic on his hands…

Boy Meets World is almost here. Here is Fash’s incredibly dope video for the track “Life as a Shorty”, and it was directed by Punit Dhesi.  I love everything about this video, definitely a dope concept. October 20th people…

THE PAVEMENT REUNION IS OFFICIAL!

Posted in Media, Music News, Video with tags , , , , on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 by Tim Althaus

pavement_band

YES! My dreams have come true. What many would say is arguably the greatest band of the 90’s, Pavement, is getting back together for an official reunion. Numerous reports from Pitchfork & The Brooklyn Vegan have confirmed rumors that Pavement will be reuniting in 2010. According to what I’ve read, Pavement will be reuniting for Central Park SummerStage on September 21st, 2010. There is also talks of Pavement playing Coachella, ATP & maybe even a full length tour.

I can assure you I will be scrapping like hell to get some tickets to First Avenue in MPLS if these guys come through. I’ve been a huge Pavement fan for the last five or six years since I found out about them. Everything that these guys did was genius, and their music will always be timeless. Pavement is easily one of my favorite bands in Rock & Roll history.

Now it’s time for some Pavement Classics to celebrate:
