The Chairs cover Bon Iver and swing through La Crosse next month

I’ve heard a few tracks from these guys in the past and their debut EP was a real treat, now The Chairs are planning a short tour at the end of March. The new track is another spectacular cover (they also covered Neutral Milk Hotel a few months ago). This time the guys take a stab at Bon Iver’s beautiful song “Flume” of his debut album. It works out pretty well too, I mean sure, the empty and echoing feelings of the hollow Wisconsin woods are gone but they’re traded for soothing synths and guitar’s of the electric kind. If you haven’t heard these guys yet this track is a decent gauge of their sound, they have a certain spookiness that I can’t really describe. So check it out for sure

And if you enjoy this sample be sure to see them on their tour next month. They’re sweeping through the midwest on a short tour, and they’ll be hitting La Crosse on March 26th. Their show is at Viterbo University, too bad places like the Warehouse can’t bring in acts like this, La Crosse is a town anxious for concerts like this one, and I hope there is a great turn out for these guys. So go out and support great music, whether it’s at their La Crosse show or any of their midwest stops, it’ll be worth your time.

A debut album is set to be released March 17th, so the tour should be featuring plenty of new material. King Khan & the Shrines announce U.S. release of What Is?!

The long running Berlin, Germany by way of French Canada garage-soul-rock band, King Khan and the Shrines, have announced a US release for their 2007 album What Is?! through their US label Vice Records. What many people might not know is that the recent The Supreme Genius Of album was simply a greatest hits compilation of songs that Khan has already released across the pond. This is why, as you might notice, several of the beloved songs from that release from last year are also on this full length album

It’s great that What Is?! will get to see the light of day as their second release through Vice. Look for it on April 21, 2009. Right now, you can listen to a few of the tracks on the band’s MySpace page. .

Cage to Offer a Slew of Material

It appears as though your favorite wierdo indie Hip-Hop emcee, Cage, is going to be dropping a wealth of material in the months to come. His follow up to 2005’s classic Hell’s Winter, Depart From Me is dropping on June 30th via Def Jux. You may say, “Wow Tim… That’s a hell of a long time to wait for another album from Cage.” My answer to that statement is, “Well thank god for all of us, he is going to be dropping an EP this spring.”

The EP is going to be called I Never Knew You and it is going to contain seven tracks. Of course, Shia LaBeouf will be directing the video for the EP’s title track. As some of you may recall, Shia & Cage are supposed to be working on a biopic of Cage’s life. I’ve been looking all over for updates on the movie because Cage has had one of the craziest lives that you could ever imagine.

I can personally tell you that Depart From Me is a release that I have been itching for the last couple of years. Hell’s Winter was an instant classic and I think Cage is one of the most talented individuals on the Def Jux roster. By the way things look, Cage could dominate 2009. Make sure you watch out for this material because it is sure to please, and of course watch for the review at Mind Inversion once the material is out. Clutch to enter studio to begin recording new album

Clutch‘s From Beale Street to Oblivion was easily my favorite rock ‘n roll album of the year when it was released in 2007, but unfortunately the album never got the push from the rest of the music world that it rightly deserved. Even though the guys in Clutch are busy with a million different things (including their own bastard off-shoot jam/rockabilliy band The Bakerton Group), it doesn’t look like I’ll have to wait much longer to hear more of their awesome boogie rock:

“Management at Weathermaker Music has announced that Clutch will enter Magpie Cage recording studios in Baltimore with producer J. Robbins on March 20th, to work on their first studio record in over 2 years. The yet to be titled release is set for a June 30th worldwide release through Weathermaker. Robbins produced both The Bakerton Group’s El Rojo and Clutch’s critically acclaimed 2005 release Robot Hive/Exodus and we are very excited to be working with him on yet another Clutch release.”

Buy Dark Was The Night, Save The World

So the day has come. The greatest compilation I’ve ever been a part of. And by “been a part of” I mean “relished over”. So yeah, Dark Was The Night releases today on 4Ad records, it comes on triple vinyl or double disc or even iTunes download, but MOST IMPORTANT is that fact that ALL PROCEEDS go to the Red Hot Organization to HELP FIGHT AND CURE AIDS. Why not do a great thing today, and enjoy some of the best new music out there. Please take my advice, if only for this once.

New Audio: The Decemberists, “The Hazards of Love”

From their forthcoming release on Capitol Records, slated to be releases March 24th, The Decemberists have begun streaming the title track to The Hazards of Love. It’s a little slower than some of their other material, and especially more than the other single “Rake’s Song”. The track runs fairly long too, and can become a bit boring. At nearly seven and a half minutes, “The Hazards of Love” is a promising track for the album. Like I said, it’s not overwhelming or mesmerizing at all, but it’s really solid and grounded in being good at what it’s good at. (Kind of reminds me of what I think about the new Andrew Bird album). Anyway, check it out for sure and enjoy!

Puscifer plays live for the first time in Las Vegas

Last night in Las Vegas, Maynard James Keenan’s Puscifer, the project he describes as his “creative subconscious”, made their live show debut at the Pearl Theatre in front of a crowd of 2,500. According to the SPIN review, the eccentric, electro-lounge industrial music of Maynard’s Puscifer was just a small part of a grand variety show that included a variety of over-the-top comedic visual accompaniments and a large list of guest musicians and performers such as Brian Posehn, Gil and Rani Sharone, Milla Jovovich, and Tim Alexander. Keenan is an oddball, and the three show set at the Palms Springs Casino that he’s doing right now with Puscifer is the way for any fan to experience this extremely creative (and unwaveringly theatrical & provocative) artist in his rawest and truest form. No video of the concert has surfaced yet, but in the meantime I highly encourage you to watch this brand new video interview the Suicide Girls conducted with Maynard at his winery. Among other things, they delve into the purpose of the crazy Puscifer, the unwritten duties of creative individuals, and his personal love for “the art of” winemaking. As he emphasizes in the video, he’s not content merely being just some rockstar or another guy in the band. To his end, MJK will be a 21st century renaissance man.

New Audio: High Places – “Anyango”

A good start to a friday, if I’ve ever had one. A new High Places track from their upcoming album Thank You Very Quickly was released this morning, delighting listeners of their amazing afro-american infusion music. I’ve been digging tunes like this lately, whether it’s Very Best, El Guincho, or The Ruby Suns, I’ve been loving worldy influenced music. “Anyango” delivers a strong punch, and is a great start to their new album. Funky bass lines and amazing drumming heavily influenced by the African members of the group, “Anyango” is definietly worth checkign out if you haven’t heard anything by High Places yet. Ozzfest is officially over, but who really cares?

Ozzfest, Rest In Pain

As Blabbermouth reports today, Ozzy’s too busy with his shitty new reality show and half-assed music to put on another Ozzfest this year, but we don’t really need his shitty festival anyway!

Ozzfest has had its time in the sun, and after a year of hard economic times it’s not surprising that an expensive touring package of this kind would have a hard time succeeding unless it’s extremely well put together. Although I admittedly have not been to the show since 2001, I have heard many rumors that the recent experience was not nearly up to par with what I experienced and certainly not comparable to the shows’ glory days of the mid 90s.

For what my money’s worth, I would much rather go to a great destination festival of the traditional European variety. As MetalSucks reminds us, many new underground metal festivals of this kind have been popping up all over the United States during the last several years, and now many are getting quite reputtable lineups. Examples include New England’s Metal and Hardcore Festival, California Metalfest, Maryland Deathfest, Texas Metal Up Your Ass, LA Murderfest, Atlanta’s Scion Rock Fest, and even Milwaukee’s Robot Mosh Fest. With the high number of brilliant package tours being lined up as well, who really needs a bloated, commercialized Ozz-o-rama on wheels? Not me, and surely not most metalheads.

For those still craving the Ozzfest format, don’t worry! The Rockstar Energy sponsored Mayhem festival tour looks like its getting more success than ever. From the looks of their recent lineup additions for this summers tour, it will be worth every penny that you’ll pay, whether you agree with the shows corporate nature or not.

Video + New Audio: Simian Mobile Disco – “Synthesise”

Simian Mobile Disco have stayed fairly busy since their amazing 2007 release Attack Sustain Decay Release. Though the album didn’t gain as much support as it deserved (thank Justice and Daft Punk touring for that) the boys still released plenty of single around the album, touring heavily in support, and fixed up a Fabriclive mix as well. I haven’t heard much in the way of official plans for their next release, fingers crossed that it’s this year, but a new song they’ve been playing live got the video treatment. Though the video is nothing special, seeing as it’s just the video accompiament for when they play the track live, the song is something to stick around for. “Synthesise” is more beat driven and heavy than some of their prior songs that may have relied a bit more on vocal samples. At any rate though, it’s definitely worth a listen. Enjoy!
