Here is a video of Evidence freestyling over a classic beat by Alchemist at Fat Beats during an instore. Notice that EV is great when it comes to rhymes off the top of the head. This guy has absolutely torn the game apart the last two years and it’s no wonder. He’s a beast.

Audio: N.A.S.A. – “The Mayor” featuring The Cool Kids, Ghostface Killah, Scarface, and DJ AM

nasaWhile more and more material from North America South America, better known as N.A.S.A, leaks out I get more an more anxious to listen to the whole disc front to back. The beyond ambitious group is making noise amongst all crowds with prior leaks featuring Lil Wayne and another featuring Chuck D, not to mention tracks that feature Tom Waits and Karen O.

This track though comes close to being the best leak thus far. “The Mayor” is a track that bangs from front to back, reminding listeners of what rap and hip-hop infused can really result in. The collaborative effort is astonishing considering the amount of talent on one track. I’ve gotta say that Ghostface takes the cake and really makes the track, which is somewhat disappointing for high my hopes were for the Cool Kids on this album.

Give a listen for sure though, and be sure to check out the album release February 17th on Squeak E. Clean records

Posted in Concert Dates on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 by Ryan Buege

l_2389e0161fb441f4abfd15a582a3158eWednesday is a good night for cheap entry fees and cheap drinks. Come over to the Uptown Bar tonight to check out a nigth of the best electro-rock that Minneapolis has to offer; local up-and-coming crowd-pleasers Solid Gold will be headlining the event (with live and dj sets), and Military Special will provide support. The music starts at 9:30!

Solid Gold is coming off a recent packed house show at the Turf Club that had the entire audience moving, and they’ve got a higher profile gig scheduled next week opening for Tape ‘N’ Tapes in the First Ave. mainroom, so this is so good chance to catch them amped up and playing their spacy psychedelic electro pop-rock in their natural setting. For now, check out their bliss at their MySpace and watch Above the Fold‘s video recording of their breakout, “Get Over It”, at the Turf Club on January 16th.

I HIGHLY recommend click on the button in the lower right hand corner for High Quality!

Audio: New songs from Mastodon, Cannibal Corpse, and Kylesa posted online

Posted in Audio with tags , , , , , on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 by Ryan Buege

More new metal is making its way online today; here’s the rundown:

Mastodon, “Divination”
(STREAM – skip to 21:30 mark to hear song)
from forthcoming album Crack the Skye, available tentatively on March 24, 2009

It’s already been nearly 3 years since their brilliant third album Blood Mountain launched them into the spotlight, and now they are back with their epic, carefully crafted Rasputin influenced, (elemental) ethereal based followup. There’s really no telling what direction these guys will go in, but my instincts are telling me it well take them into progressive and uncharted territories that will elevate their profile as “forward-thinking metalheads” even more!

Cannibal Corpse, Evisceration Plague
(STREAM ENTIRE ALBUM)
Evisceration Plague will hit stores on February 3, 2009

Brutal death metal kings Cannibal Corpse are set to soon release the album that promises to be even heavier than 2006’s Kill. These veterans have set the goal of making each of their albums heavier than the last, and although that’s getting tougher and tougher each time, an authentic Florida session with Erik Rhutan has helped these veternans achieve it.  This is one of the most anticipated death metal albums of the year, and for now you can hear it all for free…

Kylesa, “Said and Done”
(STREAM)
from forthcoming album Static Tensions, available on March 17, 2009

Kylesa sounds like they’ve really grown into their own skin on this album. Their gritty, grooving doom sounds more precise and psychedelic this time around, and there’s a nice polish over the tracks that adds a fullness to the sound that I haven’t heard from them before. If the rest of the album sounds like “Said and Done” this will be an sure album of the year qualifier and a career peak for the band. They’ll be here to play this live in early April with Haunted, Nachtmystium, and Intronaut.

Album Review: Team B – “Team B”

Posted in Music Reviews with tags , , , , , on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 by Erik Burg

teambcoverWhether it’s to fulfill their ego and take over the world, or maybe that they actually do have that much musical creativity. Who knows why musicians jump from group to group trying to juggle three projects at once while disappointing fans who have been waiting for that new album release from one of the three bands. Anyway, it has happened again, this time with some of the lesser known parts of indie rock’s most popular.

Team B is the result of seven different artists, headed by Kelly Pratt of the Arcade Fire, and the contributions of a hand full of other musicians as well. Essentially Beirut without Zach Condon, try and imagine other people from those albums having talent too, Team B is a fun-loving, not-too-serious, music endeavor that should be the model for other groups that take collective parts like this. Their debut album, self-titled, is an eclectic mix of different stylings ranging from the normal pop and lebanese influences of Beirut to the heavier and more guitar driven tracks.

Featuring contributions by Pat Mahoney (DFA, LCD Soundsystem) on drums, again helping lend a hand to the many different types of genres explored on this album. The biggest contribution might be by the cult favorite Richard Reed Parry of the Arcade Fire on a couple of tracks. From Mahoney’s funky and echoing drums, to Parry’s multi-instrumental background and skill set, Team B offers a little something to all its listeners out there.

The first single off the album, “On My Mind,” is an immaculate piece of song-writing and pop perfection. Whether it’s the finger-snapping, soft vocals, or sudden guitar solo near the end, “On My Mind” sticks out not only as the highlight of this album, but as the highlight of releases so far in 2009.

Written while on tour with Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem, Kelly Pratt and his band of other odds and ends craft one of the finer albums I’ve ran across lately. With the perfect blend of pop and rock, song-writing and vocals, Team B are the model for collabortion bands like this. Look for a follow up effort in 5 years… maybe that’s being optimistic though.

Audio: Mos Def “Life in Marvelous Times” & “Quiet Dog”

Posted in Audio with tags , , , , , on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 by Tim Althaus

mos_def21 Mos Def is one of those guys that just seems to always be around. He is going to be dropping his first album since Tru3 Magic, which was released in 2006. A lot of people knocked Might Mos for Tru3 Magic and I really don’t blame them, the album just didn’t strike a cord for me. It was no where near the level of aspirations shown on Black on Both Sides.

I can honestly say that I am highly anticipating this album. I haven’t heard anything from Mos in a while, and he’s about due for a classic. I mean this guy has two uber classic albums in Hip-Hop on his shoulders (Black on Both Sides & Black Star w/ Kweli). Watch for Mos to be dropping some fire on The Ecstatic which is slated to drop on Downtown Records on February 24th.

It will also include an interview with Johannes and Anders answering questions from fans all around the world and the videos for “The Watchtower”, “Leave Me Here”, and “Back to Chapel Town” and will be available for sale on March 23rd. Here is another animated video for another song off of N.A.S.A.‘s debut album Spirit of Apollo (which drops Feb. 17th). I want to re-iterate what I’ve been saying all along, go buy this album when it hits shelves because it’s going to be something special and amazing. This is a nice animated video and I can tell you right now that I’m loving the way that these guys switch things up on the beats. Check the video and buy the album.
