Us comes out on Tuesday, and I have already been hearing quite a few people herald it as the best album of the year hands down. It’ll be nice to take my 10:05-11:15 break from class to run to Best Buy and scoop the new album, and immediately throw it in my CD player. The video above, which I caught over at 2Dopeboyz, features Ali performing the track “The Preacher” off of the album Us. Sounds like Ali might have another classic on his hands…
Brother Ali Performs “The Preacher” in Paris

I would have posted this yesterday when the news came about, but I didn’t have a chance to get to it. I had logged on to Twitter for the first (and only time yesterday) and saw that R.I.P. Roc Raida was a trend and I went motionless. I couldn’t believe that another legend in the game of Hip-Hop, not to mention one of the best DJ’s of all-time, passed away. I’m still expressionless about the matter, yet another talented soul that was taken much too early.
Many of you may know Anthony Williams (AKA DJ Roc Raida) as being a part of the DJ clique The X-Ecutioners, and many of you may know of his solo material that he released over the years. One thing is for certain, Roc Raida is one of the most talented individuals to have ever touched the decks. He was the 1995 DMC World DJ Champion, and anyone who has seen the man in action will testify that he’s unreal. If you don’t know what I mean, just watch the video I’ve attached below of Roc performing with Bussa Buss just a short month ago.

THE PAVEMENT REUNION IS OFFICIAL!
Posted in Media, Music News, Video with tags ATP, coachella, G.O.A.T., Pavement, reunion on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 by Tim Althaus
YES! My dreams have come true. What many would say is arguably the greatest band of the 90’s, Pavement, is getting back together for an official reunion. Numerous reports from Pitchfork & The Brooklyn Vegan have confirmed rumors that Pavement will be reuniting in 2010. According to what I’ve read, Pavement will be reuniting for Central Park SummerStage on September 21st, 2010. There is also talks of Pavement playing Coachella, ATP & maybe even a full length tour.
I can assure you I will be scrapping like hell to get some tickets to First Avenue in MPLS if these guys come through. I’ve been a huge Pavement fan for the last five or six years since I found out about them. Everything that these guys did was genius, and their music will always be timeless. Pavement is easily one of my favorite bands in Rock & Roll history.
Now it’s time for some Pavement Classics to celebrate:

Sabzi (of Blue Scholars), 69ROLLS&OOF! (Mixtape)

Thank you to Matt Conway for this gem in my inbox. Here is a new mixtape from Sabzi (of Blue Scholars & Common Market). Here is what Sabzi himself had to say about it:
“People ask me why I care about making a mix of Hawaiian tunes. I tell them that it’s because Iʼm from Seattle. I donʼt think I can apply the word ‘foreign’ to any cultural elements that have influenced me in becoming the person I am today. Through years of, um, ‘nourishment’ from grinds, to listening to Jawaiian tunes as a teenager, to starting a group with a military kid from Honolulu, to learning the meaning of ‘false crack’ the hard way (ha!)… the spirit of Hawaii has long maintained a notable presence in my life. And while Iʼm not Hawaiian, nor do I claim to be a local boy, I acknowledge and am thankful for the role that the Islands have played in the development of my cultural identity.
For me, a big part of the OOF! EP project was to experiment with a new way of identifying who we are and where we come from. It was an exercise in global cultural expression . Perhaps this is the age we can start believing that “where we are from” is anywhere that has influenced us in becoming who we are. And perhaps our brothers and sisters are those who want to share this belief with us. When you embrace this idea, you start to think that home can be everywhere and your people could be everyone. New People comin thru, son!
Respect to In4mation for the nifty ‘OOF!’ logo they designed and lent us, respect to Ohana for engineering the delicious shrimp tempura + diced spicy scallop + krab + masago sushi that they’ve dubbed the ‘69 Roll,’ and respect to you for reading this and listening to these tunes.
Mahalo.”

Wild Style Wednesday Review: Blue Scholars, Bayani
Posted in Music Reviews, Wildstyle Wednesdays with tags Bayani, Geologic, Sabzi, seattle, West Coast on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 by Tim Althaus
I think the first time I heard about Blue Scholars was in Spin Magazine or a similar publication. I recall the memory because I was reading a review of their album Bayani. The review that I read was highly favorable, and naturally I wanted to see what the hype was all about. Prior to buying the album, I had never really listened to any artists from Seattle. I mean I knew West Coast Hip-Hop was dope, just not this dope. Bayani is one of my favorite albums I’ve picked up over the last couple years. I’ve been listening to this album a great deal since I found out about it, and to be put quite simply, it never gets old. Continue reading

Aloe Blacc Talks About “Houston”
Posted in Audio, Downloads with tags Aloe Blacc, Emanon, Exile, Houston on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 by Tim Althaus
If you haven’t heard of Aloe Blacc or Emanon, you should feel ashamed of yourself. According to 2DopeBoyz, Aloe Blacc & Exile (Emanon) will be putting out a new album. If you haven’t heard any of Emanon’s prior work, I suggest that you go out and get yourself acquainted. On a separate note, Aloe Blacc is one of the most talented guys you will ever listen to. He sings and raps, much like Phonte of Little Brother. On this track, “Houston”, you will actually hear Aloe sing and rhyme. Definitely something I can say I am looking forward to.
