Wild Style Wednesday Review: Clipse, Lord Willin’

lordwillin This album was my first introduction (as well as most other people) to the Brothers Thornton. I remember being in 10th grade riding around in my buddy Copus’s car listening to this album damn near every day. Since the album Lord Willin’, Clipse has been a duo known for their wicked, witty verses and sick ass Neptunes beats. To me it was really funny when they dropped Hell Hath No Fury because it seemed to me that nobody mentioned Lord Willin’. It was almost as if Lord Willin’ never even existed. In my opinion you couldn’t have put out a better label debut than Lord Willin’, this album is stacked with addictive top-notch beats and over the top lyricism filled with more metaphors and allusions about cocaine than you can imagine. Malice & Pusha are so good that they make cocaine sound interesting. Continue reading

20090609-js

Here is another guy that all of you shouldn’t even think about sleeping on. DJ JS-1 just dropped his album Ground Original (No Sellout 2), and from what I’ve heard it’s the real deal. There are so many great guest appearances that I had to check this one out; to name a few: Copywrite, EMC, Aesop Rock, Vast Aire & many more (not to mention the emcees on the tracks posted). He just dropped a remix of the track “Ridiculous” that features Masta Ace, Pharoahe Monch & OC. If you have had any doubts about this album at all just take a listen to this track and I think you may be singing a slightly different tune.

Also Download:

DJ JS-1, “Nuthin” (Feat. Brother Ali, Sadat X & C.L. Smooth)

DJ JS-1, “Murder” (Feat. Killah Priest, Sean Price & Chino XL)

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Are you jumping on the Slaughterhouse hype like I am? Well if you are, you certainly do not want to miss this video. Thanks to the guys over at 2DopeBoyz we have over 15 minutes of Joell Ortiz, Royce Da 5’9″, Joe Budden & Crooked I tearing apart the stage at this year’s Rock The Bells in DC. After watching a video like this and hearing the tracks they’ve been putting out, I can’t wait to hear the album. If you sleep on this one you should be done for.

Here is the fourth video off of Stef’s new album Never Better. It’s for his track “Purexed”, and yet again I absolutely love the cinematography in this video. All of the videos that P.O.S. has been putting out have been very impressive. Make sure you check this video out, super dope shit and thanks to Shake on the look for this one.

Exile & DJ Day’s Tribute to Michael Jackson

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , on Monday, July 13, 2009 by Tim Althaus

If you’ve never seen these two minipulate an MPC live you are truly missing out. I posted a video a while back of these two playing MPCs on a live act that they were doing on tour. This is a video of Exile & DJ Day practicing their tribute to Michael Jackson in their hotel room the day after he passed. It’s amazing how well these guys have mastered the MPC, and to be honest they are probably some of the best in the game. Notice at the end (after putting down 2 straight minutes of beauty) they say that it’s a work in progress. I can tell you now that I can’t wait to see the final product.

Toki Wright Performs “A Different Mirror” Live on The Current

Speaking of Toki Wright, here is a great video of him performing the title track off of his latest effort A Different Mirror on 89.3 The Current. As you can see in the video, this dude can flow mad tight and has a great deal of talent. Please do yourself a favor and go pick up his album, he’s reppin’ hard for the Mighty Minneapolis. Thanks to the homie Shake on this one.

Album Review: Toki Wright, A Different Mirror

Toki Wright I say this all the time but, I feel so great being from Minnesota because Minneapolis is a mad music machine that keeps churning out great homeland talent. Toki Wright is a perfectly prime example of what I previously stated. I’ve seen Toki at just about every Hip-Hop event I’ve ever been to in Minneapolis, so for that reason alone he will always be a pivotal stamp in Twin Cities Hip-Hop. I got the chance to see Toki at this year’s Soundset, and I was very impressed when I saw him perform his solo material. His new album, A Different Mirror, is a great example of a hungry emcee deliberately devouring the microphone on every track. The beats on this album accent Toki’s violent and vicious flow perfectly, and Toki’s witty wordplay is highly infectious. Continue reading

New Mr. J. Medeiros Video – “Holding On”

Posted in News with tags , , , on Monday, July 13, 2009 by Nolan Levenson

Shout out to Okayplayer for this one. Mr. J. Medeiros of the extinct Procussions has become a prominent solo artist in my opinion. His first album, 2007’s Of Gods and Girls was incredible (please go check it out if you haven’t). He’s a lyrical, conscious MC from LA via Colorado Springs with some excellent producers. Above is the video for the track “Holding On” featuring Tara Ellis. The song will appear on his upcoming album Friends Enemies Apples Apples due out in September. Check it out!

Black Milk Brodcast, Episode 2

Posted in Media, Video with tags , , , on Monday, July 13, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Twitter is a beautiful thing isn’t it? I checked my Twitter feed on my Blackberry and noticed this video was posted by none other than Black Milk. This is the second video from his Black Milk Broadcast series, and this video features more amazing footage from Europe. The girl in the beginning of the video mentions that the show that Black put on was one of the best that the club has seen for awhile, when you see him go on stage you will definitely see how true that statement is. Yet again, I love seeing Black mess with the MPC on stage and chop shit up. The way that he enters into “The Matrix” is unreal.
