Details Surrounding Brother Ali’s Us are Revealed

brotherali1Brother Ali already released the critically acclaimed Truth Is Here EP this year, and now he is gearing up to release his full length Us which is due out this fall. Ali isn’t usually known for large amounts of guest appearances on his albums, but on this outting we will see more than we usually do. Joining him on the mic will be Chuck D, Freeway, Joell Ortiz & Stokely Williams. There is no word yet on the production for the album, but knowing Ali’s traditional formula I’m guessing Ant will have a huge role in this one. Those 2 have never made a miss, always hits but I wouldn’t mind seeing Jake One adding some of his pristine production to the bill.

Brother Ali is touring with Evidence & Toki Wright this fall in support of the new album, as well as Evidence’s new album Cats & Dogs. You can follow me after the jump for the tour dates. Continue reading

This is the Day I’ve Been Waiting For…

Posted in Music News, Video with tags , , , , on Friday, July 17, 2009 by Tim Althaus

That’s right folks, it appears as though the sickest cat in the game just got sicker. I’ve been waiting to hear these words pretty much this whole year. As you can see above, Evidence just signed a multi-record deal with powerhouse label Rhymesayers Entertainment. You heard it, Cats & Dogs will be coming out on Rhymesayers Entertainment. I can’t tell you how truly happy I am to hear this news, I’ve been wondering if Rhymesayers was going to end up being a home for EV for awhile now. I almost feel as though this is a little bit surreal and I can’t figure out why. The one thing I can figure out, and do know, is that Evidence & Rhymesayers Entertainment are going to be taking over the game in 2010. Make sure you watch out for EV on tour with Brother Ali this fall.

Album Review: Toki Wright, A Different Mirror

Posted in Music Reviews with tags , , , , , , , on Monday, July 13, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Toki Wright I say this all the time but, I feel so great being from Minnesota because Minneapolis is a mad music machine that keeps churning out great homeland talent. Toki Wright is a perfectly prime example of what I previously stated. I’ve seen Toki at just about every Hip-Hop event I’ve ever been to in Minneapolis, so for that reason alone he will always be a pivotal stamp in Twin Cities Hip-Hop. I got the chance to see Toki at this year’s Soundset, and I was very impressed when I saw him perform his solo material. His new album, A Different Mirror, is a great example of a hungry emcee deliberately devouring the microphone on every track. The beats on this album accent Toki’s violent and vicious flow perfectly, and Toki’s witty wordplay is highly infectious. Continue reading

Wildstyle Wednesday Review: Brother Ali, Shadows On The Sun

Posted in Music Reviews, Wildstyle Wednesdays with tags , , , , on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 by Tim Althaus

Shadows_on_the_SunRhymesayers has been a stamp in Midwest Hip-Hop for as long as I remember. They also have their fair share of classics, but I’m almost positive that Brother Ali’s Shadows On The Sun is still the best album from their catalog to date. Brother Ali leaves the microphone murderously massacred on every single track on this album, and Ant’s production is nothing short of superbly stellar. I am a fan of everything that Ali has put out, but I really don’t think that any other album stands up to this one. There are so many different feels on this album, one track Ali will be spitting furiously, and the next track he’ll be having fun. If this album makes one thing clear, it’s that Brother Ali loves Hip-Hop, and Hip-Hop loves Brother Ali. Continue reading

As many of you know, Toki Wright released his debut LP on Rhymesayers Entertainment this last Tuesday. He was gracious enough to drop his first single entitled “The Feeling” which features Brother Ali. Big Bad Brother Ali also produced the beat on this track, which I may add is fire. Both emcees spit 16 some nice bars, and leave me wanting to hear more. Make sure you go out and buy Toki’s album A Different Mirror out on Rhymesayers now.

Brother Ali music video for “Good Lord” premieres; interviewed on KarmaloopTV

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Awhile back I posted a video of a promo for Brother Ali’s video for “Good Lord”. Well as you can see above the video is finally here, and it’s awesome. The video was shot at the Malcom X & Betty Shabazz Center, and was produced by Rik Cordero. This is a great video for an even better song. If you haven’t gotten The Truth is Here EP I have little to no faith in you.

Also, KarmaLoop had a chance to catch up with Brother Ali in Boston at one of his shows. Brother Ali talks about the people that listen to his music and how they probably grew up different than he did. He also talks about the song “Forest Whitiker” and the fact that he is really glad to be in the skin that he’s in. Brother Ali bring a great introspect into music because he’s lived on both sides of the street (ghetto and suburb) and he’s one of the most humble people you’ll ever meet. It’s great to hear an emcee like Brother Ali talking about how happy he is to be where he’s at.
